ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hypogalactia (PH) is prominent during lactation and may negatively impact the mother's or infant's health. Acupuncture is widely used to increase maternal breast milk production. However, the effects of acupuncture on PH remain unclear. Therefore, this review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in individuals with PH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Articles on potentially eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on acupuncture for PH published from database inception to October 2023 were retrieved from the PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, EBSCO, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, WanFang, and VIP databases. Two reviewers independently screened the records, extracted essential information, and evaluated the methodological quality of the RCTs using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias (RoB) tool. The primary outcome was a change in serum prolactin (PRL) levels before and after treatment. Secondary outcomes included milk secretion volume (MSV), total effective rate (TER), mammary fullness degree (MFD), and exclusive breastfeeding rate (EBR). Meta-analyses were performed using RevMan v5.4. Finally, the quality of evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool. RESULTS: This study included 19 RCTs involving 2,400 participants. The included studies were classified as having an unclear to high RoB. Our findings indicated that, overall, acupuncture showed a significant effect in increasing serum PRL levels (standardized mean differences [SMDs] = 1.09, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.50, 1.68), MSV (SMD = 1.69, 95% CI: 0.53, 2.86), TER (relative risk [RR] = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.10, 1.42), and EBR (RR = 2.01, 95% CI: 1.07, 3.78) compared to that in the control group; however, no difference in MFD (SMD = 1.17, 95% CI: -0.09, 2.42) was observed. In the subgroup analysis, acupuncture combined with Chinese herbs or conventional treatment was significantly more effective in increasing serum PRL levels, MSV, and TER than did Chinese herbs or conventional treatment alone. Moreover, acupuncture alone resulted in significantly higher serum PRL levels compared to Chinese herbs; however, this benefit was not observed for TER and MFD. The quality of evidence was critically low. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture may effectively increase milk secretion in women with PH. However, owing to the low quality of evidence, further rigorously designed studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

ABSTRACT

Background: Anxiety and depression are prevalent mental disorders. As modern society continues to face mounting pressures, the incidence of anxiety and depression is on the rise. In recent years, there has been an increasing breadth of research exploring the relationship between anxiety, depression, and physical activity (PA). However, the current research progress and future development trends are unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the research hotspots and development trends in this field, and to provide guidance for future studies and to provide some reference for clinicians. Methods: We searched the relevant literature of Web of Science Core Collection from the establishment of the database to August 15, 2023. CiteSpace, VOSviewer and Bibliometrix Packages based on the R language were used to analyze the number of publications, countries, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords. Results: A total of 1,591 studies were included in the analysis, and the research in the field of PA on anxiety or depression has consistently expanded. The USA (304 publications), Harvard University (93 publications), and the journal of affective disorders (97 publications) were the countries, institutions, and journals that published the highest number of articles, respectively. According to the keywords, students and pregnant women, adult neurogenesis, and Tai Chi were the groups of concern, physiological and pathological mechanisms, and the type of PA of interest, respectively. Conclusion: The study of PA on anxiety or depression is experiencing ongoing expansion. Clinicians can consider advising patients to take mind-body exercise to improve mood. In addition, future researchers can explore the mind-body exercise and its impact on anxiety or depression, PA and anxiety or depression in specific populations, and adult neurogenesis of various exercise in anxiety or depression.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Considering the increasing incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) worldwide, there is an urgent need to identify efficacious, safe and convenient treatments. Numerous investigations have been conducted on the use of supplements in this domain, with oral supplementation emerging as a viable therapeutic approach for AD or MCI. Nevertheless, given the multitude of available supplements, it becomes imperative to identify the optimal treatment regimen. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Eight academic databases and three clinical trial registries will be searched from their inception to 1 June 2023. To identify randomised controlled trials investigating the effects of supplements on patients with AD or MCI, two independent reviewers (X-YZ and Y-QL) will extract relevant information from eligible articles, while the risk of bias in the included studies will be assessed using the Rob 2.0 tool developed by the Cochrane Collaboration. The primary outcome of interest is the overall cognitive function. Pair-wise meta-analysis will be conducted using RevMan V.5.3, while network meta-analysis will be carried out using Stata 17.0 and ADDIS 1.16.8. Heterogeneity test, data synthesis and subgroup analysis will be performed if necessary. The GRADE system will be employed to assess the quality of evidence. This study is scheduled to commence on 1 June 2023 and conclude on 1 October 2023. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval is not required for systematic review and network meta-analysis. The results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal or at a conference. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: PROSPERO (CRD42023414700).

ABSTRACT

Herein, a Sc(OTf)3-catalyzed (3+2) annulation of 2-indolylmethanols with propargylic alcohols is reported. The reaction proceeds via a Friedel-Crafts-type allenylation/5-exo-annulation cascade. In the reaction, 2-indolylmethanol is used as a three-carbon synthon, and propargyl alcohol is used as a two-carbon synthon. This method provides a direct and high-yield pathway for synthetically useful cyclopenta[b]indoles. In general, the method features easily accessible substrates with broad scope and generality, the formation of multiple bonds with high efficiency, and easy scale-up.

ABSTRACT

Chronic trauma in diabetes is a leading cause of disability and mortality. Exosomes show promise in tissue regeneration. This study investigates the role of exosomes derived from adipose stem cells (ADSC-Exos) in angiogenesis. MiRNA-seq analysis revealed significant changes in 47 genes in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) treated with ADSC-Exos, with miR-146a-5p highly expressed. MiR-146a-5p mimics enhanced the pro-angiogenic effects of ADSC-Exos, while inhibitors had the opposite effect. JAZF1 was identified as a direct downstream target of miR-146a-5p through bioinformatics, qRT-PCR, and dual luciferase assay. Overexpress of JAZF1 resulted in decreased proliferation, migration, and angiogenic capacity of HUVECs, and reduced VEGFA expression. This study proposes that ADSC-Exos regulate angiogenesis partly via the miR-146a-5p/JAZF1 axis.

BACKGROUND: In plastic surgery, autologous fat grafts (AFG) play an important role because of their abundant supply, biocompatibility, and low rejection rate. However, the lower retention rate of fat grafts limits their widespread use. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) can promote angiogenesis and regulate the level of associated inflammation. This study explored whether BAT has a facilitative effect on fat graft retention. METHODS: We obtained white adipose tissue (WAT) from c57 mice and combined it with either BAT from c57 mice or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as a control. These mixtures were injected subcutaneously into the back of thymus-free nude mice. After 12 weeks, fat grafts were harvested, weighed, and analyzed. RESULTS: We found that the BAT-grafted group had higher mass retention, more mature adipocytes, and higher vascularity than the other group. Further analysis revealed that BAT inhibited M1 macrophages; down-regulated IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-ß; upregulated M2 macrophages and Vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGFA); and promoted adipocyte regeneration by inhibiting the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, which together promoted adipose graft retention. CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated that BAT improved adipose graft retention by promoting angiogenesis, inhibiting tissue inflammation levels and the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence showed that acupuncture may improve cognitive function by reducing oxidative stress, key to the pathogenesis in vascular dementia (VaD), but this is yet to be systematically analysed. This study aimed to summarize and evaluate the effect of acupuncture on oxidative stress in animal models of VaD. METHOD: Eight databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane library, CNKI, Wan Fang, CBM, and VIP were searched since their establishment until April 2023, for studies that reported the effect of acupuncture on oxidative stress in VaD animal models. Relevant literature was screened, and information was extracted by two reviewers. The primary outcomes were the levels of oxidative stress indicators. The methodological quality was assessed via the SYRCLE Risk of Bias Tool. Statistical analyses were performed using the RevMan and Stata software. RESULTS: In total, 22 studies with 747 animals were included. The methodology of most studies had flaws or uncertainties. The meta-analysis indicated that, overall, acupuncture significantly reduced the expression of pro-oxidants including reactive oxygen species (standardized mean differences [SMDs] = -4.29, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -6.26, -2.31), malondialdehyde (SMD = -2.27, 95% CI: -3.07, -1.47), nitric oxide (SMD = -0.85, 95% CI: -1.50, -0.20), and nitric oxide synthase (SMD = -1.01, 95% CI: -1.69, -0.34) and enhanced the levels of anti-oxidants including super oxide dismutase (SMD = 2.80, 95% CI: 1.98, 3.61), glutathione peroxidase (SMD = 1.32, 95% CI: -0.11, 2.76), and catalase (SMD = 1.31, 95% CI: 0.05, 2.58) in VaD animal models. In subgroup analyses, acupuncture showed significant effects on most variables. Only partial modelling methods and treatment duration could interpret the heterogeneity of some outcomes. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture may inhibit oxidative stress to improve cognitive deficits in animal models of VaD. Nevertheless, the methodological quality is unsatisfactory. More high-quality research with a rigorous design and further experimental researches and clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings. ABSTRACT

An efficient synthesis of (+)-peniciketal B has been accomplished in 15 steps from the commercially available materials atraric acid, acryloyl chloride, and (+)-homoallylic alcohol. A convergent synthetic approach that is quite concise for constructing either "hemisphere" of (+)-peniciketal B with a common intermediate is employed that relies on a cascade intermolecular FeCl3-mediated "inner sphere" Michael-type reaction/double cyclization of an α,ß-unsaturated ketone and substituted phenol to build the benzo-fused 2,8-dioxabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane with excellent diastereoselectivity. The generality of the transformation was also demonstrated by the broad scope of substrates that would be potential candidates for natural product synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Benzannulated [6,6]spiroketal was installed by a late-stage acid-catalyzed spiroketalization.

BACKGROUND: Autologous fat is a rich source of adipose tissue that is safe for transplantation. Decreasing the long-term absorption rate is key to improve the survival of transplanted adipose tissue. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of concentrated growth factor (CGF) on the survival of transplanted adipose tissue for repair of facial depression malformations. METHODS: Coleman adipose granules (CAGs) were prepared from venous blood. In the animal experiment, the ears of 30 healthy male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 groups: CGF + CAG (CGF group), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) + CAG (PRF group), CAG alone (CAG group), and adipose granule transplantation group (control group). Postoperative survival of the transplanted adipose tissue was assessed, the survival and absorption rates of adipose were calculated, and immunohistochemical analysis of specimens was conducted by staining with hematoxylin and eosin and Oil Red O. Of 43 outpatients, 22 received simple adipose transplantation and 21 received autologous CGF combined with adipose transplantation. The adipose absorption rate, complication rate, and cosmetic improvement of the 2 groups were compared. RESULTS: More adipocytes that are normal were observed in the CGF group, with fewer vacuoles and more uniform distribution of adipose tissue. Survival of the adipose tissue was superior in the CGF and PRF groups. Meanwhile, vascular density and long-term stability were better in the CGF group than the PRF group. In terms of clinical efficacy, the uniformity and survival rate of the adipose tissue were relatively improved in the CGF group compared with the simple adipose particle transplantation group, with less early liquefaction. CONCLUSION: Concentrated growth factor stabilized and improved the survival of transplanted adipose tissue for filling of facial depression malformations.

To investigate the effect of exogenous application of melatonin (MT) on rice seedlings under antimony (Sb) stress, hydroponic experiments were carried out with rice seedlings (Huarun No.2). The fluorescent probe localization technology was used to locate the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the root tips of rice seedlings, and the root viability, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, ROS (H2O2 and O2-·) content, antioxidant enzyme (SOD, POD, CAT, and APX) activities, and antioxidant (GSH, GSSG, AsA, and DHA) contents in the roots of rice seedlings were analyzed. The results showed that exogenous addition of MT could alleviate the adverse effects of Sb stress on the growth and increase the biomass of rice seedlings. Compared with the Sb treatment, the application of 100 µmol·L-1 MT increased rice root viability and total root length by 44.1% and 34.7% and reduced the content of MDA, H2O2, and O2-· by 30.0%, 32.7%, and 40.5%, respectively. Further, the MT treatment increased the activities of POD and CAT by 54.1% and 21.8%, respectively, and also regulated the AsA-GSH cycle. This research indicated that exogenous application of 100 µmol·L-1MT can promote the growth and antioxidant ability of rice seedlings and alleviate the damage of lipid peroxidation by Sb stress, thus improving the resistance of rice seedlings under Sb stress.

ABSTRACT

Adulteration identification of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a vital issue in the olive oil industry. In this study, chromatographic fingerprint data of pigments combined with machine learning methodologies were successfully identified and classified EVOO, refined-pomace olive oil (R-POO), rapeseed oil (RO), soybean oil (SO), peanut oil (PO), sunflower oil (SFO), flaxseed oil (FO), corn oil (CO), extra virgin olive oil adulterated with rapeseed oil (EVOO-RO) and extra virgin olive oil adulterated with corn oil (EVOO-CO). Support vector machine (SVM) classification of EVOO, other edible oils, and EVOO adulteration identification achieved 100% accuracy for the training set sample and 94.44% accuracy for the test set sample. As a result, this SVM model could identify effectively the adulteration EVOO with the limit of 1% RO and 1% CO. Therefore, the excellent classification and predictive power of this model indicated pigments could be used as potential markers for identifying EVOO adulteration.

INTRODUCTION: Breast milk is recognised as the best natural food for neonates, but many women experience postpartum hypogalactia (PH). Randomised trials have found that acupuncture exert therapeutic effect on women with PH. However, systematic reviews on the efficacy and safety of acupuncture are still lacking; therefore, this systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for PH. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Six English databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, EBSCO, Scopus, and Web of Science) and four Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan-Fang, Chinese Biomedical Literature and Chinese Scientific Journal) will be systematically searched from their establishment to 1 September 2022. Randomised controlled trials of the efficacy of acupuncture for PH will be reviewed. The study selection, data extraction and research quality evaluation will be conducted independently by two reviewers. The primary outcome is the change in serum prolactin level from baseline to the end of treatment. Secondary results include milk secretion volume, total effectiveness rate, degree of mammary fullness, rate of exclusive breast feeding, and adverse events. A meta-analysis will be performed using RevMan V.5.4 statistical software. Otherwise, a descriptive analysis will be conducted. The risk of bias will be assessed using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This systematic review protocol does not require ethical approval because it does not include private information/data of the participants. This article will be published in peer-reviewed journals. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42022351849.

ABSTRACT

Furanocoumarins and flavonoids have various important biological activities and wide application. In the present study, a rapid and reliable supercritical fluid chromatography method was proposed for the separation of 10 target components including 8 furanocoumarins and 2 flavonoids. After detailed condition optimization, the 10 target compounds can be baseline separated on a Trefoil CEL1 (3.0 mm × 150 mm, 2.5 µm) column using gradient elution. A 0.07% (v/v) trifluoroacetic acid in ethanol was determined to be the most proper mobile phase for the separation of target compounds. The column temperature, back pressure, flow rate were set at 36 â„ƒ, 2000 psi, 1.0 mL min-1 to 1.4 mL min-1, respectively. The ten target compounds were analyzed within 24 min using the optimized conditions. Under the optimized conditions, all the target compounds showed good linearity with linear correlation coefficients higher than 0.995, and satisfactory recovery in the range of 83.52-112.92%. All these results showed that the developed ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography method was reliable and effective. Finally, the application of the developed method to cosmetic, Psoraleae fructus and Angelicae dahuricae radix samples were presented. The results highlight the applicability of the ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography method to the analysis of interested compounds in pharmaceutical and cosmetic samples.

Arsenic (As) pollution has a toxic effect on crop growth, leading to reduced crop quality and yield. Therefore, it is urgent to explore safe and effective strategies to reduce its toxicity. In this experiment, hydroponics, fluorescent probe locating technology, differential centrifugation, and Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis were used to research the effect of exogenous jasmonic acid (JA) on the accumulation and stress resistance of rice seedlings. The results showed that JA application reduced the As content in the roots and shoots of rice by 31.4% and 51.4%, respectively, and significantly reduced As content in the cell wall and soluble fractions of rice roots. JA changed the distribution ratio of As in the subcellular components. The distribution ratio of As in the cell wall increased by 16.4%, and the distribution ratio of soluble fractions decreased by 17.3%. JA enhanced the fixation of As by the cell wall and reduced the As content in the soluble fraction. Furthermore, JA increased the levels of SOD, CAT, GSH, and PEPC in root cells and reduced the contents of H2O2 and MDA, indicating that JA reduced lipid peroxidation damage, regulated carbon and nitrogen metabolism, and alleviated As toxicity. This research provides a new approach for the prevention and control of rice As pollution.

ABSTRACT

Cortex Fraxini is an important traditional Chinese herbal medicine with various medical functions. Aesculin and aesculetin are the main effective components of Cortex Fraxini. The fluorescence signals of the two compounds have a high degree of overlap with each other, making quantitative analysis difficult with conventional analytical methods. In the present study, different chemometrics methods, including lasso regression (LAR), interval partial least squares (iPLS), and multidimensional partial least squares (N-PLS) methods, were employed and combined with excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence for the purpose of accurate quantification of aesculin and aesculetin in Cortex Fraxini samples. The most satisfactory results were obtained by using the N-PLS method based on the EEM spectra without scatterings, with correlation coefficient of calibration and prediction values higher than 0.9972 and 0.9962, respectively, root mean squared errors for calibration and prediction values lower than 0.0304 and 0.1165, respectively, and recovery values in the range of 83.32%-104.62%. The obtained credible models indicated that the N-PLS method combined with EEM spectra has the advantages of being green, low cost, and accurate and it is a good strategy for the determination of active compounds in complex samples. To further confirm the accuracy of the obtained results, the same samples were analyzed by the recognized ultra-performance liquid chromatography method.

In order to improve the phytoextraction efficiency of Xanthium sibiricum on farmland soil that had been contaminated by Cd and As, this study explored the effects of chelating agents and organic acids (EDTA, SAP, CA, and MA) on the extraction of Cd and As heavy metals using X. sibiricum. The results showed that the four different chelating agents and organic acids had little effect on the biomass of the roots, stems, and leaves of X. sibiricum. However, they had different effects on the concentrations and accumulation of Cd and As in various organs of X. sibiricum. Compared with the those in the CK treatment, EDTA, SAP, CA, and MA significantly increased the Cd concentrations in the leaves of X. sibiricum by 44.1%, 32.4%, 41.2%, and 38.2% and the As concentrations in the roots of X. sibiricum by 89.6%, 7.4%, 94.8%, and 61.5%, respectively. The four treatments (EDTA, SAP, CA, and MA) improved the total Cd accumulation of X. sibiricum, with increasing ranges, respectively, of 70.2%, 29.4%, 28.9%, and 33.1%, and the As accumulation increased by 67.0%, 19.6%, 81.9%, and 40.8%, respectively, compared with that of the CK treatment. The four chelating agents and organic acids had different effects on the Cd and As bioconcentration factor and transfer factor of various organs of X. sibiricum. Treatments with EDTA, SAP, CA, and MA resulted in a decrease of 32.7%-38.2% in soil Cd concentrations and a decrease of 14.6%-20.5% in soil As concentrations. These four chelating agents can be used for enhancing the efficiency of extraction Cd and As heavy metals by X. sibiricum.

ABSTRACT

Melatonin (MT) is a hormone with antioxidant activity secreted by the pineal gland in the human brain, which is highly efficient in scavenging free radicals and plays an important role in the neuro-immuno-endocrine system. Emerging evidence showed that MT supplementation was a potential therapeutic strategy for Parkinson's disease (PD), which inhibits pathways associated with oxidative stress in PD. In this study, we reported a C7-selective olefination of melatonin under rhodium catalysis with the aid of PIII-directing groups and synthesized 10 new melatonin-C7-cinnamic acid derivatives (6a-6j). The antioxidant potential of the compounds was evaluated both by ABTS and ORAC methods. Among these newly synthesized melatonin derivatives, 6a showed significantly higher activity than MT at 10-5 M. In the transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans model of PD, 6a significantly reduces alpha-synuclein aggregation and dopaminergic neuronal damage in nematodes while reducing intracellular ROS levels and recovers behavioral dysfunction induced by dopaminergic neurodegeneration. Further study of the mechanism of action of this compound can provide new therapeutic ideas and treatment strategies for PD.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a hybrid technique is proposed to establish quantitative models for the determination of target compounds in different spectral datasets. The proposed hybrid method is the hybridization of interval partial least squares (iPLS) method with gradient descent (GD) algorithm. Here, the novelty of the proposed method is that the iPLS method is applied to variable selection and the GD algorithm is employed to establish quantitative models based on the selected optimal variables. In the application of the hybrid iPLS-GD method, the factors, i.e., the number of the interval for the iPLS method and the learning rate, the number of iterations for the GD method, that affect the quantitative accuracy of the method are optimized and determined. Then three spectral datasets, including the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) dataset, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) dataset and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEM) dataset, are used to test and verify the performance of the iPLS-GD method. We compare the hybrid iPLS-GD method with the PLS and iPLS methods from the aspects of modeling ability and predictive ability. The results demonstrated that the iPLS-GD method can be used as an effective and promising tool for the determination of target compounds in complex samples in practice.

ABSTRACT

Evaluating risks when driving is a valuable method by which to make people better understand their driving behavior, and also provides the basis for improving driving performance. In many existing risk evaluation studies, however, most of the time only the occurrence frequency of risky driving events is considered in the time dimension and fixed weights allocation is adopted when constructing a risk evaluation model. In this study, we develop a driving behavior-based relative risk evaluation model using a nonparametric optimization method, in which both the frequency and the severity level of different risky driving behaviors are taken into account, and the concept of relative risk instead of absolute risk is proposed. In the case study, based on the data from a naturalistic driving experiment, various risky driving behaviors are identified, and the proposed model is applied to assess the overall risk related to the distance travelled by an individual driver during a specific driving segment, relative to other drivers on other segments, and it is further compared with an absolute risk evaluation. The results show that the proposed model is superior in avoiding the absolute risk quantification of all kinds of risky driving behaviors, and meanwhile, a prior knowledge on the contribution of different risky driving behaviors to the overall risk is not required. Such a model has a wide range of application scenarios, and is valuable for feedback research relating to safe driving, for a personalized insurance assessment based on drivers' behavior, and for the safety evaluation of professional drivers such as ride-hailing drivers.

ABSTRACT

Dearomatization of indole is a useful strategy to access indolimines: a motif widely exists in biologically active molecules and natural products. Herein, an efficient method for the dearomatization of 2,3-disubstituted indoles to generate diverse indolimines with tetrasubstituted allenes is described. This work accomplishes dearomatization of 2,3-disubstituted indoles through 1,8-addition of (aza)-para-quinone methides, which are generated in situ from propargylic alcohols. A series of synthetically useful indolimines containing quaternary carbon centers and tetrasubstituted allenes can be accessed in good yields (up to 99%). Additionally, the separability of product isomers, diversified product transformations, and easy scale-up of the reaction demonstrate the potential application of this method.
