ABSTRACT
An extract of Cestrum parqui aerial parts in methanol:water (1:1) showed inhibition of carrageenin-induced oedema. The aggregation of human blood platelets induced by adenosine diphosphate and platelet activating factor was also inhibited (IC(50)s were 3 and 2 mg/mL, respectively). On the contrary, the extract did not inhibit arachidonic acid-mediated platelet aggregation.

A new steroidal saponin named diurnoside 1 has been isolated from a methanolic extract of fresh leaves of Cestrum diurnum and the structure, (25 R)-5 alpha-spirostan-3beta-yl-4-O-[2-O-(beta-D-gluco pyranosyl)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-3-O-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl]-beta-D- glucopyranosyl]-beta-D-galactopyranoside, was determined by modern NMR technique and chemical reactions.

A new triterpenoid saponin, macrophyllicin has been isolated from the methanolic extract of the whole plant of Primula macrophylla. On the basis of chemical and spectral evidence, the structure of macrophyllicin was determined as 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl- (1-->2)-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl] -6 beta,16 alpha,28-trihydroxy-olean-12-ene. The 2D NMR experiments were useful in providing complete information on the structure of macrophyllogenin, a new sapogenin.

A new steroidal saponin named nocturnoside A has been isolated from the methanolic extract of the fresh leaves of Cestrum nocturnum and has been characterized by 13C NMR spectroscopy to be 3-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1----3)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1----2)-beta-D- glucopyranosyl((3----1)-beta-D-xylopyranosyl)(1----4)-beta-D- galactopyranosyl) (25R)-spirost-5-ene-2 alpha,3 beta-diol.
