ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess collagen content and types in the rectus abdominis muscle of cadavers of different ages. METHODS: Forty fresh adult male cadavers within 24 h of death were obtained from an Institute of Legal Medicine and divided by age at death into Group 1 (mean age, 23.3 years; range, 18-30 years; n = 20) and Group 2 (mean age, 46.2 years; range, 31-60 years; n = 20). From each cadaver, samples of the rectus abdominis muscle measuring 1 cm(2) were collected 3 cm superiorly and 2 cm inferiorly to the umbilicus. Histological sections were prepared and stained with picrosirius red and Masson's trichrome stain for visualization of total collagen fibers, and immunohistochemical analysis was performed to distinguish types I, II, III, IV and V collagen. RESULTS: No significant differences in total collagen were found between groups by Masson's trichrome staining. However, picrosirius red staining revealed a significantly greater amount and higher concentration of total collagen and types I and III collagen in Group 1 than in Group 2 (P < 0.05). All but type II collagen were detected by immunohistochemistry in both groups. No significant difference in type IV collagen was found between groups. Type V collagen was detected by immunohistochemistry in both groups, but quantification was not possible due to background staining. CONCLUSION: The amounts of types I and III collagen in the rectus abdominis muscle were significantly smaller in older subjects.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the tension at the aponeurotic edges after the undermining of the anterior rectus sheath associated with the classic components separation in cadavers. METHODS: Twenty fresh adult cadavers were placed supine and an incision in the anterior rectus sheath was done, thus exposing the posterior sheath. The two levels to be studied were marked 3 cm above and 2 cm below the umbilicus. An analogical dynamometer was used to measure the traction values, consecutively during four stages as follows: initial stage, no aponeurotic undermining; Stage 1, separation of the anterior rectus sheaths; Stage 2, after Stage 1 the external oblique aponeurosis were incised along the semilunaris and the external oblique muscles were undermined; Stage 3, after Stage 2 rectus muscles were completely separated from their posterior sheaths. Statistical analysis was done by Friedman's analysis of variance (p < 0.05). RESULTS: There was a progressive and significant decrease in tension along the stages (Friedman's analysis of variance, p < 0.001). Traction indexes were higher in the initial stage and became gradually lower along the other stages. CONCLUSION: The undermining of the anterior rectus sheaths helps to decrease tension during the components separation technique. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level V, experimental study.

ABSTRACT

The associations of leptin (LEP) gene polymorphisms C798T, T2411C, T3266G and T3469C with production traits were investigated in a F2 pig population produced by divergent crosses. The statistical model included genotype, sex, batch and genotype by sex interaction as fixed effects and sire as random effect. Polymorphism C798T was associated with variation in total teat number (p < 0.02) and left teat number (p < 0.03), and polymorphism T3469C was associated with weight at 21 days (p < 0.03), 42 days (p < 0.05), 63 days (p < 0.02) and 77 days of age (p < 0.04) as well as feed intake (p < 0.01), average daily gain (p < 0.01), feed conversion (p < 0.01), bacon depth (p < 0.03) and slaughter weight (p < 0.03). Phenotypic associations were also performed by combining T3469C and C798T genotypes. Interaction between C798T genotypes and sex was observed for some traits. LEP genotypes had significant influence on performance traits, and can be considered as potential genetic markers for selection. However, these results have to be validated in commercial herds.

ABSTRACT

Avaliou-se a atividade antiinflamatória do extrato etanólico de própolis - EEP, . sobre o edema desencadeado por carragenina, dextrana e histamina. O EEP apresentou dose eficaz (DE50) de 650 mg/kg (v.o), inibindo significativamente o processo inflamatório desencadeado pela carragenina, mas não inibiu o produzido por dextrana. O EEP antagonizou ainda o efeito edematogênico produzido por histamina. Nas úlceras produzidas por estresse, o EPP inibiu de forma significativa a geração dos diversos tipos classificados. Em todos os parâmetros analisados no estudo da toxicidade em fase de tratamento subcrônico , (hematológicos, bioquímicos e histopatológicos), o grupo tratado com o EEP não apresentou diferença significativa em relação ao grupo controle. Desta forma, sugere-se que na dose de 650 mg/kg (dose eficaz) não existe a presença de efeitos tóxicos que possam comprometer a utilização deste extrato.


The antlinflammatory activity of Ethanolic Extract of Propolis - EEP was evaluated on edema induced by carrageenan, dextran and hystamine. The inflammatory process induced by carrageenan was significantly reduced by the treatment with EEP (650 mg/kg, p.o), while it did not interfere in the response induced by dextran. The EEP antagonized the edematous effect produced by hystamine. The EEP promoted a significant inhibition in the generation of the ulcers induced by stress (p < 0.05). The hematological, biochemical and histopathological parameters presented no differences between treated and control groups. Therefore it can be concluded that the effective dose of 650 mg/kg of the EEP has no toxic effect which may compromise the use of this extract.

ABSTRACT

The vegetal species Pterodon emarginatus Vog. (Leguminosae/Papilonaceae), popularly known in Brazil as 'sucupira branca', is widely used by domestic medicine as an anti-inflammatory. From these observations, the hexanic crude extract (HCE) of the fruits was obtained and submitted for assessment of its anti-inflammatory activity. For this purpose, the following tests were used: (1) Determination of ED50 and LD50; (2) Paw edema induced by carrageenin, dextran, histamine and nystatin; (3) Peritonitis caused by carrageenin and (4) Granuloma test. The ED50 (oral) in the edema induced by carrageenin was 500 mg/kg, and LD50 (oral) was 4.02 g/kg. In the edema caused by nystatin, there was a significant inhibition by 45% (P < 0.05 student's t-test) at the 6th hour following the treatment. In the granuloma test performed in animals treated with HCE, there was an inhibition of the granulomatous tissue formation by 22%. The migration of neutrophils towards the peritoneal cavity was inhibited in HCE treated animals by 43% (P < 0.05). However, in the edema caused by dextran and histamine, there was no significant response in HCE treated animals.
