ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship of Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Monocyte Lymphocyte Ratio (MLR), and Neutrophil Monocyte Ratio (NMR) with treatment response in Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) patients during intensive phase treatment (IPT). METHODS: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases (OICD), Dow University of Health Sciences, from February to December 2021. 100 patients were enrolled using purposive sampling technique. Both male and female of age 18 and above, rifampicin sensitive newly diagnosed cases of PTB by Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB) microscopy and Gene Xpert MTB/RIF were included. SPSS version 26 was used to analyze data. Numerical data was expressed in median and interquartile range and categorical data was expressed in frequencies and percentages. RESULTS: Out of total 100 patients, 81% (n = 81) showed treatment response with negative AFB Sputum Smear Microscopy (SSM) after 2nd month. Out of 81% (n = 81) of the patients who achieved treatment response, 83.9% (n = 68) also had decreased NLR, 85.2% (n = 69) had decreased MLR and 83.9% (n = 68) had decreased NMR from baseline. However 19% (n = 19) did not achieved treatment response with positive AFB SSM after 2nd month of ATT (Anti tuberculosis treatment), among them 10.52% (n = 2) were INH resistant with no decrease in all the ratios after 2nd month. CONCLUSION: Leukocyte ratios decreased significantly from baseline as PTB was treated in patients who achieved treatment response with negative AFB SSM after two months of ATT and hence these ratios could be used as markers to monitor the treatment response.

ABSTRACT

Negative behaviors at the workplace always disturb the management of the firms. This research investigates the link between the dark triad and various types of Knowledge hiding (Evasive hiding, Playing dumb, and Rationalized hiding) in firms. In addition, this study explores perceived organizational politics as a mediator. The design of this study is quantitative and positivist. The data were collected in three waves (45 days gap) with a random sampling approach from 383 personnel/staff working in Chinese commercial banking firms. The data were analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique and Smartpls-4 software. This study confirms that dark-triad has a positive relation with knowledge hiding, except psychopathy and Machiavellianism, which have no significant correlation with playing dumb and evasive hiding, respectively. Perceived organizational politics significantly mediate the association between dark triad personality traits and the types of knowledge hiding. Employees with political skills and a trust-based culture can counter the dark-triad personalities and discourage the knowledge-hiding culture. For effective management of knowledge-hiding issues in firms, codifying implicit and explicit Knowledge and developing knowledge repositories can discourage a knowledge-hiding culture.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patients with hidradenitis suppurativa have substantial unmet clinical needs and scarce therapeutic options. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of bimekizumab, a monoclonal IgG1 antibody that selectively inhibits interleukin (IL)-17F and IL-17A, in patients with moderate-to-severe hidradenitis suppurativa. METHODS: BE HEARD I and II were two identically designed, 48-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre phase 3 trials. Patients aged 18 years or older with moderate-to-severe hidradenitis suppurativa were randomly assigned 2:2:2:1 using interactive response technology (stratified by worst Hurley Stage at baseline and baseline systemic antibiotic use) to receive subcutaneous bimekizumab 320 mg every 2 weeks; bimekizumab 320 mg every 2 weeks to week 16, then every 4 weeks to week 48; bimekizumab 320 mg every 4 weeks to week 48; or placebo to week 16, then bimekizumab 320 mg every 2 weeks. The primary outcome was an hidradenitis suppurativa clinical response of at least 50%, defined as a reduction in total abscess and inflammatory nodule count of at least 50% from baseline with no increase from baseline in abscess or draining tunnel count (HiSCR50) at week 16. Efficacy analyses included all randomly assigned study patients (intention-to-treat population). Safety analyses included all patients who received at least one full or partial dose of study treatment in the safety set, and of bimekizumab in the active-medication set. These trials are registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04242446 and NCT04242498, and both are completed. FINDINGS: Patients for BE HEARD I were recruited from Feb 19, 2020, to Oct 27, 2021, and 505 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned. Patients for BE HEARD II were recruited from March 2, 2020, to July 28, 2021, and 509 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned. The primary outcome at week 16 was met in the group who received bimekizumab every 2 weeks using modified non-responder imputation; higher responder rates were observed with bimekizumab versus placebo in both trials: 138 (48%) of 289 patients versus 21 (29%) of 72 patients in BE HEARD I (odds ratio [OR] 2·23 [97·5% CI 1·16-4·31]; p=0·0060) and 151 (52%) of 291 patients versus 24 (32%) of 74 patients in BE HEARD II (2·29 [1·22-4·29]; p=0·0032). In BE HEARD II, HiSCR50 was also met in the group who were administered bimekizumab every 4 weeks (77 [54%] of 144 vs 24 [32%] of 74 with placebo; 2·42 [1·22-4·80]; p=0·0038). Responses were maintained or increased to week 48. Serious treatment-emergent adverse events were reported in 40 (8%) patients in BE HEARD I and in 24 (5%) patients in BE HEARD II treated with bimekizumab over 48 weeks. The most frequently reported treatment-emergent adverse events to week 48 were hidradenitis in both trials, in addition to coronavirus infection and diarrhoea in BE HEARD I, and oral candidiasis and headache in BE HEARD II. One death was reported across the two trials, and was due to congestive heart failure in a patient with substantial cardiovascular history treated with bimekizumab every 2 weeks in BE HEARD I (considered unrelated to bimekizumab treatment by the investigator). No new safety signals were observed. INTERPRETATION: Bimekizumab was well tolerated by patients with hidradenitis suppurativa and produced rapid and deep clinically meaningful responses that were maintained up to 48 weeks. Data from these two trials support the use of bimekizumab for the treatment of patients with moderate-to-severe hidradenitis suppurativa. FUNDING: UCB Pharma.

ABSTRACT

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare condition in adults, especially when it is limited to a single area of the skull, known as solitary calvarial involvement. In this case report, we present a unique instance of LCH affecting the parietal bone with a pus-draining fistula. This is a rare and unusual presentation at this location, which has been scarcely reported in medical literature. A 30-year-old woman with no prior comorbidity presented with complaints of headache that persisted for a year. She also had swelling on her scalp and a yellowish discharge for 3 weeks, but no neurological problems were observed. Radiology revealed thinning of the calvaria, with ragged margins along the inner table, multiple focal erosions, and involvement of overlying soft tissue and bony sequestrum. The patient underwent biparietal craniotomy and excision of the lesion. The histopathology report showed LCH. After 8 months of follow-up, there was no recurrence. The management of solitary calvarial involvement by LCH with masquerading presentation as a scalp infection can be achieved through complete excision of the lesions, resulting in a favorable outcome.

ABSTRACT

Background: Non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) are well-differentiated benign tumors originating from the adenohypophyseal cells of the pituitary gland. They present with headaches, visual disorders, or cranial nerve deficits. NFPAs can recur, progress, or present as residual tumors. We, therefore, conducted this review to compare the effects of both revision surgery and stereotactic surgery on tumor size, visual status, endocrine status, and complications. Methods: A systematic review of published literature on recurrent, residual, or progressing NFPAs that underwent redo surgery or stereotactic radiosurgery from the inception till June 2020 was conducted as per Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Thirteen records (1209 patients) were included, and risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) estimated from each study were pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis model. Results: Redo surgery was the preferred intervention in patients presenting with larger tumor sizes and was more effective in reducing the tumor size as compared to stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) (risk ratio [RR] 56.14; 95% CI, 16.45-191.58). There was more visual loss with revision surgery as compared to SRS (risk ratio [RR] 0.08; 95% CI, 0.03-0.20). However, SRS was associated with fewer complications, such as new diabetes insipidus, as compared to the redo surgery (risk ratio [RR] 0.01; 95% CI 0.01-0.03). Conclusion: Redo surgery is the superior choice in the treatment of recurrent/residual or progressing NFPAs if the tumor size is large and an immediate reduction in tumor burden through debulking is warranted. However, redo surgery is associated with a higher risk of visual loss, new endocrinopathies, and other complications, in contrast to SRS.

Impostorism and knowledge-hiding behaviors negatively impact employees and organizational performance. This study examines the association between impostor leaders and knowledge hiding (evasive hiding, playing dumb, and rationalized hiding). Attachment avoidance is discussed as a mediator between impostor leaders and knowledge-hiding. For quantitative analyses, this study collected the data from 429 individuals with two time lags by sharing the survey instrument link on different organizations' randomly selected official media pages. After obtaining approval from the administrators of these pages, leaders and subordinates from these organizations were asked to participate in the study. The partial least squares structural equation modeling method is employed with Smartpls-4 software for data analyses. The findings indicate that impostor leaders promote knowledge hiding in subordinates. However, impostor leaders highly promote rationalized hiding behavior in subordinates. Attachment avoidance mediates the relationship between the impostor leader and knowledge-hiding behaviors. However, the highest mediation relationship exists between an impostor leader and playing dumb behavior in subordinates. This study strengthens the generalizability of the social exchange theory. The implications mentioned in this study are beneficial in understanding and dealing with the Impostorism and knowledge-hiding phenomena.

ABSTRACT

We have employed a co-precipitation method to synthesize different concentrations of carbon spheres (CSs) doped with cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) for catalytic reduction and antibacterial applications. Various morphological and structural characterization techniques were used to comprehensively analyze the CS effect on CdS QDs. The catalytic reduction efficiency of CS-doped CdS QDs was evaluated using rhodamine B dye. The antibacterial efficacy was also assessed against the pathogenic microorganism Escherichia coli (E. coli), and substantial destruction in the inhibitory zone was measured. Finally, the synthesized CS-doped CdS QDs demonstrated favorable results for catalytic reduction and antibacterial applications. Computational studies verified the suppressive impact of these formed QDs on DNA gyrase and ß-lactamase of E. coli.

OBJECTIVE: To develop, implement, and evaluate the impact of one-year peer mentoring programme for postgraduate medical residents. STUDY DESIGN: Mixed methods. Place and Duration of the Study: The Aga Khan University, Karachi, from January 2019 to December 2020. METHODOLOGY: A survey was administered to junior residents in Medicine, Paediatrics, Pathology, and Radiology residency programmes to identify their academic needs from January 2019 to December 2020. Final-year residents, who served as peer mentors were provided a one-day mentoring workshop, including details of the identified needs. This was followed by one-year intervention in which mentors-mentees met as per mutual feasibility. A structured survey and focus group discussions were conducted to inquire the effectiveness of mentoring. RESULTS: A total of 33 out of 52 (63%) Year 1 residents completed needs analysis survey. Four essential identified areas were research (63%), memory (59%), reading (55%), and time management (53%). Residents reported excelling in areas of research, memory and reading, however, time management needed improvement. Focus group discussions emphasised mentoring as mandatory, including the wide range of skills. CONCLUSION: Senior residents should be trained as mentors of juniors, and semi-structured formal and informal mentoring can be implemented across all residency programmes. Herein, we evaluated the in vivo effects of meloxicam and curcumin co-encapsulated PLGA nanoparticles in experimental acute models of pyrexia, nociception, and inflammation. Seven groups (n = 6) were designed for each investigation and pretreated intraperitoneally (i.p.): the control group, meloxicam (4 mg/kg b.w.), curcumin (15 mg/kg b.w.), and equivalent content containing PLGA capped nanoparticles of meloxicam (Mlx-NP) and curcumin (Cur-NP) alone and in combination (Mlx-Cur-NP; at two doses). The results showed that PLGA encapsulation significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved the in vivo activities of each compound. Furthermore, co-encapsulation of meloxicam and curcumin potentiated the anti-pyretic effect on yeast-induced pyretic rats, anti-nociceptive effect on nociception induced in rats by formalin and heat, and anti-edematogenic activity in xylene-induced ear edema in rats in a dose-dependent manner. In carrageenan-induced paw inflammation in rats, meloxicam and curcumin co-loading (Mlx-Cur-NP) resulted in significant (p ≤ 0.05) inhibition of paw inflammation, reduction in TNF-α and PGE2 levels, downregulation of expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6), as well as a decrease in histopathological changes and TNF-α immunoexpression in paw tissues. Moreover, Mlx-Cur-NP demonstrated noteworthy potentiation in pharmacological effects compared to free compounds and mono-compound-loaded nanoparticles. Thus, the association of meloxicam with curcumin in a biodegradable nanocarrier system could provide a promising anti-pyretic, anti-nociceptive, and anti-inflammatory therapeutic approach for acute conditions.

ABSTRACT

Thalassemia is one of the most prevalent genetic disorders worldwide. The present study aimed to explore the mutational spectrum of all hemoglobin (HB) encoding genes and to identify the potentially damaging and pathogenic variants in the beta (ß)-thalassemia major patients and thalassemia minor carriers of Southern Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 49 ß-thalassemia major patients and 49 carrier samples were screened for the identification of HBA1, HBA2, HBB, HBD, HBE1, HBG1 and HBG2 variants by NGS. PCR was performed for the amplification of HB encoding genes and the amplified product of 13 patients and 7 carrier samples were processed for the Sanger sequencing. Various bioinformatics tools and databases were employed to reveal the functional impact and pathogenicity potential of the observed variants. Results depicted a total of 20 variants of HB-related genes by NGS and 5 by Sanger sequencing in thalassemia patients. While 20 variants by NGS and 3 by Sanger were detected in carriers. Few known genetic variants of HB-encoding genes are being reported for the first time in Pakistani thalassemia patients and carriers. However, two novel HBB variants c.375A>C (p.P125P) and c.*61T>G and a novel variant of HBE1 (c.37A>T (p.T13S)) were also documented. Pathogenicity analysis predicted the pathogenic potential of HBB variants (c.47G>A (p.W16*), c.27-28insG (p. S10fs), and c.92+5G>C) for ß thalassemia. The study of functional impact indicated that these HBB variants result in the premature termination of translation leading to the loss of functional ß-globin protein. It is therefore suggested that the pathogenic HBB variants, identified during present study, can be employed for the diagnosis, carrier screening, and planning therapy of thalassemia.

This study explains workplace conflicts (interpersonal and task-related) as antecedents of knowledge-hiding behaviors. Moreover, a relational psychological contract breach is a mediator between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behavior. For empirical evidence, data were collected from research and development institutions in Pakistan. The results confirm the significant association between conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors and the mediating role of relational psychological contract breach. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of workplace conflicts (interpersonal conflict and task-related conflict) on knowledge-hiding behaviors (evasive hiding, playing dumb, and rationalized hiding). Besides, a relational psychological contract breach is used as a mediator between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. By using a simple random sampling technique and time lag strategy, the data were collected from 408 employees working in research and development institutions in Pakistan. For analyses, this study employed partial least squares structural equation modeling statistical technique by using SmartPls-3 software. The results of the study confirm the significant relationship between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. Relational psychological contract breach also significantly mediates the relationship between conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. However, this study found an insignificant association between interpersonal conflict and evasive knowledge hiding.

ABSTRACT

Objective Accidental traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to severe complications such as endocrine abnormalities and long-term morbidities and can negatively impact patient lives. These conditions are also associated with a high cost of treatment over a lifetime, a significant concern in low-to-middle-income countries (LMICs). In Pakistan, the prevalence of children with endocrine abnormalities secondary to TBI remains largely unexplored. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study to estimate the burden of endocrine abnormalities due to TBI among children in our population. Methods Twenty patients previously admitted with head injury between September and October 2019 were retrospectively reviewed with tests for baseline serum sodium, plasma osmolality, cortisol, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), free thyroxine (fT4), growth hormone (GH), insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), prolactin, estradiol, and testosterone. Data were collated from the electronic Health and Information Management System (HIMS) and analyzed using SPSS v25. Chi-square and t-tests were used to identify associations between variable groups. Outcomes of interest included correlations between hormonal levels and demographic factors, interventions and hormonal levels, and complication rates and hormonal levels. Results Our study reports three (15% of the total cohort) patients with pituitary hormone deficits (two with low IGF-1 and one with low TSH). High serum IGF-1 and ACTH levels were also observed in three (15%) children. High IGF-1 was associated with female gender (p=0.007), mechanical ventilation (p=0.038), and falls (p=0.028). IGF-1 (p=0.035) and GH (p=0.049) levels were associated with improvement in Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS-E) score. Testosterone was positively correlated with a high percentile for height (p=0.005) and GOS-E scores on follow-up (p=0.030). High testosterone levels (592.12 ± 102.28 ng/dl) were associated with good functional outcomes in post-pubescent patients (p<0.05). Serum fT4 was linked with a high GOS-E score at discharge in prepubescent patients (p=0.034). Neurosurgical decompression was the only risk factor for hormone deficiency, comprising 67% of the group with hormone deficiencies (p=0.028). The learning difficulties were observed exclusively in children with hormonal deficiencies (7 patients, p=0.000).  Conclusion Hormonal dysfunction due to TBI in children can lead to poor outcomes. High serum IGF-1, testosterone, and free T4 levels were associated with improved functional outcomes in children with TBI. Limited follow-up and resources in LMICs are significant barriers to addressing the morbidity associated with these conditions and need to be addressed at a health policy level.

Objectives: 1. Identification of protein expression and subcellular localization of E-cadherin (E-cad), p120 catenin (P120ctn), and Kaiso in oral cancer (OC). 2. To study the protein expression of cyclin D1 and c-Myc (Kaiso targets) and determine their relationship with the expression and localization of Kaiso. Methods: Histological grading was performed in accordance with Broder's criteria. Expression and localization data for E-cad, p120ctn, Kaiso, cyclin D1, and c-Myc were acquired using immunohistochemistry. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21. The chi-square test was used to measure the statistical significance of associations, with p < 0.05 as statistically significant. Results: Of 47 OC cases, 36% showed low E-cad expression and 34% showed low p120ctn. Low Kaiso expression was recognized in 78% of tumor specimens. Aberrant cytoplasmic localization of p120ctn was seen in 80.8% cases. Cytoplasmic Kaiso localization was appreciated in 87% of tumor tissues, whereas 29.7% lacked any nuclear Kaiso. Kaiso expression was significantly associated with the expression of cyclin D1 but not with c-Myc. Conclusion: The present study identified a change in the localization of Kaiso in OC. The significance of this in relation to OC and tumor prognosis needs to be investigated with further studies using larger sample sizes and more sensitive molecular tools.

Chitosan (CS) and different concentration of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) (0.02 wt% and 0.04 wt%) doped barium hydroxide (Ba(OH)2) nanoparticles (NPs) were harvested through co-precipitation route. Degradation of the potentially harmful methylene blue (MB) dye and evaluation of the antibacterial potential of the produced CS/g-C3N4-doped Ba(OH)2 NPs were the primary objectives of this study. In addition, the produced NPs were analyzed through structural, optical and morphological techniques to evaluate optical features, phase formation, elemental composition, functional groups presence, surface morphology, crystallinity, and interlayer spacing. The photocatalytic activity was assessed against the degradation of MB by varying pH, whereas Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) pathogens were utilized to determine bactericidal potential in terms of inhibition zone (mm) measured through Vernier caliper. Highly (4 %) CS/g-C3N4-doped Ba(OH)2 NPs explored effective degradation and antibacterial results as 89.39 % in neutral medium and 7.85 mm against E. coli pathogens, respectively. In silico, molecular docking studies against DNA gyrase and ß-lactamase enzyme from both E. coli and S. aureus were performed to rationale mechanism governing the anti-bacterial potential of these synthesized NPs.

Sensors play a significant role in modern technologies and devices used in industries, hospitals, healthcare, nanotechnology, astronomy, and meteorology. Sensors based upon nanostructured materials have gained special attention due to their high sensitivity, precision accuracy, and feasibility. This review discusses the fabrication of graphene-based biosensors and gas sensors, which have highly efficient performance. Significant developments in the synthesis routes to fabricate graphene-based materials with improved structural and surface properties have boosted their utilization in sensing applications. The higher surface area, better conductivity, tunable structure, and atom-thick morphology of these hybrid materials have made them highly desirable for the fabrication of flexible and stable sensors. Many publications have reported various modification approaches to improve the selectivity of these materials. In the current work, a compact and informative review focusing on the most recent developments in graphene-based biosensors and gas sensors has been designed and delivered. The research community has provided a complete critical analysis of the most robust case studies from the latest fabrication routes to the most complex challenges. Some significant ideas and solutions have been proposed to overcome the limitations regarding the field of biosensors and hazardous gas sensors.

ABSTRACT

Background: Teratomas are a rare subgroup of CNS germ cell tumors and are histologically classified into mature teratomas, immature teratomas, and teratomas with malignant transformation. CNS teratomas are infrequently found in the posterior fossa and pure mature teratomas of posterior fossa are rare especially in adults. We present a case of a young adult female with a mature teratoma in the cisterna magna. Case Description: A 26-year-old female presented to the neurosurgery clinic with headache, nausea and vomiting for the past 1 year. She was found to have dysdiadochokinesia on neurological examination. Brain magnetic resonance imaging scan showed a-well defined lesion, hyperintense on T1 and hypointense on T2-weighted sequences located within the cisterna magna. She underwent a suboccipital craniotomy with resection of lesion. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of mature cystic teratoma. Conclusion: Mature teratomas located in the posterior fossa among adults are rare in the literature. We report the second case of mature teratoma in the cisterna magna of an adult patient.

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to examine the direct and indirect impact of ambient air pollution (AAP) on employees' performance. This study has used cross sectional survey design to collect the data from the outdoor employees of the pharmaceutical industry of Pakistan. The data were collected in time lags from 299. Partial least squares- structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was applied to analyze the data. The results show that AAP has a significant negative impact on the employees' performance, and anxiety partially mediates the association between AAP and employees' performance. This study reveals that AAP brings anxiety among outdoor employees, which in turn decreases their working performance. The implications, limitations, and future research directions are presented in the last section of this study.

ABSTRACT

Degradation in the presence of visible light is essential for successfully removing dyes from industrial wastewater, which is pivotal for environmental and ecological safety. In recent years, photocatalysis has emerged as a prominent technology for wastewater treatment. This study aimed to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of synthesized TiO2 quantum dots (QDs) under visible light by barium (Ba) doping. For this, different weight ratios (2% and 4%) of Ba-doped TiO2 QDs were synthesized under ambient conditions via a simple and modified chemical co-precipitation approach. The QD crystal structure, functional groups, optical features, charge-carrier recombination, morphological properties, interlayer spacing, and presence of dopants were analyzed. The results showed that for 4% Ba-doped TiO2, the effective photocatalytic activity in the degradation process of methylene blue (MB) dye was 99.5% in an alkaline medium. Density functional theory analysis further corroborated that the band gap energy was reduced when Ba was doped into the TiO2 lattice, implying a considerable redshift of the absorption edge due to in-gap states near the valence band.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we have investigated the association between the baseline gene expression profile in periapical granuloma and periapical wound healing after surgical endodontic treatment. Twenty-seven patients aged between 15 and 57 years underwent periapical surgery. The retrieved periapical tissue sample was used for mRNA expression analysis of COL1A1, VTN, ITGA5, IL-4, TNF, ANGPT, VEGFA, and CTGF. All patients were recalled after 6 and 12 months for periapical healing evaluation. Healing was then correlated with baseline gene expression. Healing was observed in 15 patients at the end of 6 months, which increased to 21 patients after 12 months. Six patients showed no healing even after 12 months. Analysis of baseline expression levels of the tested genes with healing status showed the mean relative expression of VTN, VEGFA, ANGPT, TNF, and CTGF to be significantly different (p < 0.05) between the healing group (6 and 12 months) (72.99%) and the non-healing (94.42%) group. Periapical Index scores 3-5 exhibited a positive correlation with ITGA-5 expression. Overexpression of ANGPT and a strong positive correlation between ITGA5 and PAI scores in the non-healing group of patients may suggest these genes to be a potential prognostic biomarker for periapical wound non-healing after surgical endodontic treatment.
