ABSTRACT

Anaerobic bacterial infections in chronic sinusitis are well described in literature. We present what is believed to be the first reported case of Clostridium perfringens presenting as the causative pathogen in paranasal sinusitis. This patient presented with severe headaches and, with CT and MRI findings of unilateral sphenoid sinus opacification, with bone demineralization and intrasinus calcification. This patient responded to endoscopic debridement and long-term antibiotics without sequelae.

ABSTRACT

A case of acute Chagas' disease, diagnosed by necropsy, in a 80-year-old woman, is reported. It is assumed that infection was acquired through triatomine bite in Zacoelo de Torres, Jalisco State, Mexico. There were lesions due to Aoffican trypanosomiasis in the heart, esophagus and bowel. Autonomic nervous lesions were detected in the esophagus and bowel. It is emphasized the importance of these findings in an area where few cases of megas were reported.

ABSTRACT

We describe a 31 years old female who suffered an spontaneous dissection of the left main coronary trunk. She presented with an acute hemorrhagic myocardial infarction complicated with bifascicular block and fatal left ventricular failure. Pathological features demonstrated severe proximal left coronary artery intimal dissection and extensive hemorrhagic infarction of the left ventricle, as well as absence of atherosclerotic aortic or coronary artery disease. The severity of the clinical picture and relentless deterioration of the patient precluded the utilization of coronary arteriography to assess an emergency surgical procedure. Early and vigorous management including emergency coronary angiography, balloon counterpulsation and surgical treatment are stressed and should be carefully weighted in similar cases.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The function of the mesangial and reticuloendothelial system was evaluated in normal mice and in mice with nephritis induced by lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus infection. Heat-aggregated human immunoglobulin (AlgG) and colloidal carbon served as traceable materials which could be detected in animals' blood and tissues. LCM virus-infected proteinuric (LCM-P) mice, as compared to normal mice or LCM-infected nonproteinuric (LCM) mice, had greater accumulation of AIgG in their glomeruli at all times of examination following i.p. injection of AIgG. The removal rate of AIgG from the kidney, however, was the same in normal and LCM-P mice, indicating an unimpaired mesangial clearing system. This suggested that other mechanisms were responsible for the increased glomerular accumulation of AIgG in LCM-P mice. Reticuloendothelial function was examined directly by i.v. injection of AIgG or colloidal carbon. The data demonstrate that in this model of immune complex glomerulonephritis, colloidal material tested was removed from the blood at a slower rate than it was in normal mice. Deficient clearance of endogenous blood-borne immune complex-like material may be one of the factors playing a role in the accumulation of immune complex-like material in the glomeruli of these nephritic animals.
