ABSTRACT

As the field of nanocrystal-based optoelectronics matures, more advanced techniques must be developed in order to reveal the electronic structure of nanocrystals, particularly with device-relevant conditions. So far, most of the efforts have been focused on optical spectroscopy, and electrochemistry where an absolute energy reference is required. Device optimization requires probing not only the pristine material but also the material in its actual environment (i.e., surrounded by a transport layer and an electrode, in the presence of an applied electric field). Here, we explored the use of photoemission microscopy as a strategy for operando investigation of NC-based devices. We demonstrate that the method can be applied to a variety of materials and device geometries. Finally, we show that it provides direct access to the metal-semiconductor interface band bending as well as the distance over which the gate effect propagates in field-effect transistors.

ABSTRACT

Because of their role of information transmitter between the spinal cord and the muscle fibers, motor neurons are subject to physical stimulation and mechanical property modifications. We report on motoneuron elasticity investigated by time-resolved pump and probe spectroscopy. A dual picosecond geometry simultaneously probing the acoustic impedance mismatch at the cell-titanium transducer interface and acoustic wave propagation inside the motoneuron is presented. Such noncontact and nondestructive microscopy, correlated to standard atomic force microscopy or a fluorescent labels approach, has been carried out on a single cell to address some physical properties such as bulk modulus of elasticity, dynamical longitudinal viscosity, and adhesion.

ABSTRACT

We investigate the electronic and transport properties of HgTe 2D colloidal quantum wells. We demonstrate that the material can be made p- or n-type depending on the capping ligands. In addition to the control of majority carrier type, the surface chemistry also strongly affects the photoconductivity of the material. These transport measurements are correlated with the electronic structure determined by high resolution X-ray photoemission. We attribute the change of majority carriers to the strong hybridization of an n-doped HgS layer resulting from capping the HgTe nanoplatelets by S2- ions. We further investigate the gate and temperature dependence of the photoresponse and its dynamics. We show that the photocurrent rise and fall times can be tuned from 100 µs to 1 ms using the gate bias. Finally, we use time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as a probe of the transport relaxation to determine if the observed dynamics are limited by a fundamental process such as trapping. These pump probe surface photovoltage measurements show an even faster relaxation in the 100-500 ns range, which suggests that the current performances are rather limited by geometrical factors.

ABSTRACT

Our work describes a novel three dimensional meta-material resonator design for optoelectronic applications in the THz spectral range. In our resonant circuits, the capacitors are formed by double-metal regions cladding a dielectric core. Unlike conventional planar metamaterials, the electric field is perpendicular to the surface and totally confined in the dielectric core. Furthermore, the magnetic field, confined in the inductive part, is parallel to the electric field, ruling out coupling through propagation effects. Our geometry thus combines the benefit of double-metal structures that provide parallel plate capacitors, while maintaining the ability of meta-material resonators to adjust independently the capacitive and inductive parts. Furthermore, in our geometry, a constant bias can be applied across the dielectric, making these resonators very suitable for applications such as ultra-low dark current THz quantum detectors and amplifiers based on quantum cascade gain medium.

ABSTRACT

We report on gigahertz acoustic phonon waveguiding in free-standing single copper nanowires studied by femtosecond transient reflectivity measurements. The results are discussed on the basis of the semianalytical resolution of the Pochhammer and Chree equation. The spreading of the generated Gaussian wave packet of two different modes is derived analytically and compared with the observed oscillations of the sample reflectivity. These experiments provide a unique way to independently obtain geometrical and material characterization. This direct observation of coherent guided acoustic phonons in a single nano-object is also the first step toward nanolateral size acoustic transducer and comprehensive studies of the thermal properties of nanowires.
