ABSTRACT

New and alternative sanitation systems are increasingly discussed and find their way into implementation. However, discussions on sanitation concepts often are held in a rather emotional way. Furthermore, not all the available sanitation concepts might be known to the decision maker. The work presented here attempts to contribute to a good discussion and decision making process by compiling available technologies, by defining easy-to-implement criteria for a sustainability assessment method and by integrating these results into a simulation tool which allows to visualize the related resource fluxes (e.g. those on nutrients, such as N, P and K) and to analyse different sanitation options with regard to their capital and operational costs and with regard to environmental impact criteria such as greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst the calculations are to be considered as being approximate in their nature (due to uncertainties or lack of suitable input data), this tool allows the planners, with sometimes little modelling experience, to consider the characteristics of sanitation systems. Whilst starting from earlier work, such as Eawag's Sanitation Compendium and work on material flow analysis, work described in this contribution merges resource flux modelling, easy-to-use simulation and visualization and methods of life cycle assessment and life cycle costing. ABSTRACT

We measure time correlators of a spin qubit in an optically active quantum dot beyond the second order. Such higher-order correlators are shown to be directly sensitive to pure quantum effects that cannot be explained within the classical framework. They allow direct determination of ensemble and quantum dephasing times, T_{2}^{*} and T_{2}, using only repeated projective measurements and without the need for coherent spin control. Our method enables studies of purely quantum behavior in solid state systems, including tests of the Leggett-Garg type of inequalities that rule out local hidden variable interpretation of the quantum-dot spin dynamics.

ABSTRACT

We report Coulomb mediated hybridization of excitonic states in optically active InGaAs quantum dot molecules. By probing the optical response of an individual quantum dot molecule as a function of the static electric field applied along the molecular axis, we observe unexpected avoided level crossings that do not arise from the dominant single-particle tunnel coupling. We identify a new few-particle coupling mechanism stemming from Coulomb interactions between different neutral exciton states. Such Coulomb resonances hybridize the exciton wave function over four different electron and hole single-particle orbitals. Comparisons of experimental observations with microscopic eight-band k·p calculations taking into account a realistic quantum dot geometry show good agreement and reveal that the Coulomb resonances arise from broken symmetry in the artificial semiconductor molecule.

ABSTRACT

The ability to control and exploit quantum coherence and entanglement drives research across many fields ranging from ultra-cold quantum gases to spin systems in condensed matter. Transcending different physical systems, optical approaches have proven themselves to be particularly powerful, since they profit from the established toolbox of quantum optical techniques, are state-selective, contact-less and can be extremely fast. Here, we demonstrate how a precisely timed sequence of monochromatic ultrafast (~ 2-5 ps) optical pulses, with a well defined polarisation can be used to prepare arbitrary superpositions of exciton spin states in a semiconductor quantum dot, achieve ultrafast control of the spin-wavefunction without an applied magnetic field and make high fidelity read-out the quantum state in an arbitrary basis simply by detecting a strong (~ 2-10 pA) electric current flowing in an external circuit. The results obtained show that the combined quantum state preparation, control and read-out can be performed with a near-unity (≥97%) fidelity.

ABSTRACT

We employ ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy to directly monitor electron tunneling between discrete orbital states in a pair of spatially separated quantum dots. Immediately after excitation, several peaks are observed in the pump-probe spectrum due to Coulomb interactions between the photogenerated charge carriers. By tuning the relative energy of the orbital states in the two dots and monitoring the temporal evolution of the pump-probe spectra the electron and hole tunneling times are separately measured and resonant tunneling between the two dots is shown to be mediated both by elastic and inelastic processes. Ultrafast (<5 ps) interdot tunneling is shown to occur over a surprisingly wide bandwidth, up to ∼8 meV, reflecting the spectrum of exciton-acoustic phonon coupling in the system.

ABSTRACT

We discuss examples of the rare human genetic instability syndromes as they present themselves at the chromosome, telomere, and nuclear envelope level. Destabilization of the nuclear envelope due to mutations in the Lamin A/C gene lead to global impairments of the chromatin structure and gene expression with the fatal consequences observed in the Hutchinson-Gilford juvenile progeria syndrome. Patients with Dyskeratosis congenita have defective telomerase function. These patients exhibit a number of progeroid features, suggesting a causal connection between short telomeres and premature ageing. The most prominent example of the chromosomal instability syndromes is the Werner adult progeria syndrome where impaired helicase and exonuclease functions cause a multitude of (albeit superficial) similarities with the normal ageing process. A less well-know example is Fanconi anemia (FA) a multisystem disorder caused by biallelic mutations in one of at least 13 different genes which include the BRCA2 breast cancer gene. Unlike cells from any other human disorder, FA cells are uniquely sensitive to oxidative stress. In a situation of defective DNA repair, oxidative stress leads to accumulation of (unrepaired) DNA damage. Oxidative stress is the likely culprit of bone marrow failure, risk of neoplasia, and features of premature ageing in FA, rendering this rare disease into the only known human model of the free radical theory of ageing.

ABSTRACT

A 17-year-old boy presented with a severe form of an acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) with hemiparesis and coma after initial symptoms of a flu-like febrile infection 1 week previously. Titers against Mycoplasma pneumoniae were significantly increased in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Detection of M. pneumoniae was achieved in the initial CSF sample using M. pneumoniae-specific PCR. The patient improved significantly on antimicrobial therapy with erythromycin and immunosupressive therapy with immunoglobulins and corticosteroids. This case report demonstrates a well-documented course of a central nervous system (CNS) infection resulting in the ADEM syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Experiments were performed to determine if glucocorticoids potentiate central hypertensive actions of ANG II. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated for 3 days to 3 wk with corticosterone (Cort). Experiments were performed in conscious rats that had previously been instrumented with arterial and venous catheters and an intracerebroventricular guide cannula in a lateral ventricle. Baseline arterial pressure (AP) was greater in Cort-treated rats than in control rats (119 +/- 2 vs. 107 +/- 1 mmHg, P < 0.01). Microinjection of ANG II intracerebroventricularly produced a significantly larger increase in AP in Cort-treated rats than in control rats. For example, at 30 ng ANG II, AP increased by 23 +/- 1 and 16 +/- 2 mmHg in Cort-treated and control rats, respectively (P < 0.01). Microinjection of an angiotensin type 1 receptor antagonist significantly decreased AP (-6 +/- 2 mmHg) and heart rate (-26 +/- 7 beats/min) in Cort-treated but not control rats. Increases in AP produced by intravenous administration of ANG II were not different between control and Cort-treated rats. Intravenous injections of ANG II antagonist had no significant effects on mean AP or heart rate in control or Cort-treated rats. Therefore, a sustained increase in plasma Cort augments the central pressor effects of ANG II without altering the pressor response to peripheral administration of the hormone.

ABSTRACT

The secondary metabolite avarol, a potent cytostatic and antibacterial sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone, is present in large amounts only in the sponge Dysidea avara (2.7 g avarol/1 kg of fresh material). The present study was designed to determine the storage site of this compound within the organism. Light and transmission electron microscopic studies revealed that avarol is probably stored only in spherular cells. The compound is compartmented in intracellular cytoplasmic vesicles in a paracrystalline form, and therefore can have no inhibitory effect on the sponge cells. Quantitative analysis utilizing high-pressure liquid chromatography revealed that avarol is present at a concentration of 3.2 micrograms/10(6) spherular cells. It appears that avarol is released from the cells into the extracellular space in a merocrine manner. We suggest that it is involved in regulating the bacteria with which the sponge is symbiotically associated.

ABSTRACT

Dynamic retinoscopy has suggested that near vision may be more acute than far vision during early infancy. To test this, acuity thresholds were determined by presenting square wave gratings in a preference paradigm to 1- and 2-month-old human infants at 4 viewing distances. Gratings were paired with unpatterned fields; direction of first fixation was the dependent measure. Infants exhibited the same acuity at each of the distances at which gratings were presented. The results were interpreted as compatible with the fact that considerable optical defocusing does not seriously affect a visual system, such as the infant's, that is sensitive only to low spatial frequencies.
