ABSTRACT

100 patients from age 50 to 80 that presented urinary obstructive symptoms were studied with digital examination and with TR ultrasound; only 10 were palpably suspicious for prostatic carcinoma, the rest had a BPH. These 10 patients and 32 of the remaining revealed an abnormal area with ultrasound. 6 of the 10 palpably suspicious patients had prostatic carcinoma (60%). 8 of the 32 remaining patients had prostatic carcinoma (25%). Therefore of the 14 prostatic carcinoma 6 were of palpably positive patients, and 8 were of palpably negative patients. We suggest with this work that transrectal ultrasound is a useful technique in the early diagnosis and in the follow-up of prostatic nodules, and it is a necessary support in the decision for effecting echo-guided biopsy.

ABSTRACT

One hundred and forty-four patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated by transurethral microwave thermotherapy between January and December 1991. Before entering the study, all patients had a Boyarsky symptom score > or = 8, peak flow rate < or = 15 ml/s and postvoiding residual urine < or = 200 ml. Transurethral thermotherapy with the Prostatron (Technomed) was carried out as a single session (60 min) without any analgesia or sedation. Acute urinary retention occurred in 19.4% of the patients after treatment requiring catheterization for 2-3 weeks; morbidity rate was 5.5%. Six months after treatment, Boyarsky symptom score decreased from 11.73 +/- 4.97 to 4.40 +/- 3.21 (mean values +/- SD); peak flow rate increased on average from 8.97 +/- 4.18 to 13.07 +/- 4.87 ml/s and postvoiding residual urine decreased from 135 +/- 17.9 to 63 +/- 34.7 ml. Slight further improvement was shown, in a few patients, at the 1-year follow-up visit.

ABSTRACT

The Authors report a case of adrenal myelolipoma, with clinical picture of abdominal painful syndrome. Myelolipoma is a mixed tumor of mature adipose tissue, intermingled with myeloid tissue. None of the many theories advanced up to day has succeeded in explaining how these myeloid and adipose inclusions occur in the adrenal gland. In the case reported tumor has a mass of huge size, displacing down the homolateral kidney. Useful diagnostic tools for this pathological condition are discussed. In the personal experience of the Authors urography, echotomography combined with C.T. allow a right preoperative diagnosis in a large amount of cases.
