ABSTRACT

Introduction: Peste des petits ruminants is a transboundary disease of major economic importance and imposes significant constraints on small ruminant production. Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed in Dera and Gerar Jarso districts of the North Shewa zone, Oromia Region from February 2021 to March 2022, to estimate the antibody of PPRV and assess the associated risk factors. Blood samples (n = 662) were collected from sheep and goats. Cluster sampling strategy was employed to collect the data. Villages/Kebeles and individual small ruminants were randomly selected, while households were designated using a systematic random sampling method. Results: An overall individual animal and flock level sero-prevalence was 10.3% (95% CI = 8.2-12.8) and 100% (95% CI = 96.3-100), respectively, from the c-ELISA test result. A sero-prevalence of 11.2% (95% CI = 8.7-14.4) in Dera and 8% (95% CI = 5-12.7) in Gerar Jarso districts was recorded. Discussion: Flock size, age, sex, communal grazing, and watering system, new small ruminant introduction into a flock, and mixed rearing were significantly associated with PPR sero-positivity in sheep and goats. The chance of PPR occurrence in goats was 4 times (OR = 4; P = 0.000) more than sheep. Female sheep and goats were more likely to be sero-positive to PPR by 3 times (OR = 3.2; P = 0.003) than males. The newly introduced small ruminants had 4 times more odds (OR = 4.4; P = 0.000) of sero-positivity than animals being born at home. Small ruminants kept under communal grazing and watering system were nearly 12 times (OR = 11.5; P = 0.024) more likely sero-positive than privately managed small ruminants. Likewise, sheep and goats reared together were almost 9 times (OR = 9.4; P = 0.000) a higher chance of being sero-positive compared with separately reared small ruminants. Conclusion: The finding of PPR virus antibodies in small ruminants from all study areas indicates endemic circulation of the virus. The implementation of regular vaccination could minimize the occurrence of PPR.

ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis is a communicable mycobacterial disease of humans and animals caused by members of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, highly impacting the public health and economy of the country in endemic areas. Retrospective and cross-sectional study was conducted between March and August 2021. For knowledge, attitude, and practices study, five villages were randomly selected using simple random sampling. To quantify the public health burden, one-year data were collected from Jarso Health Center, and unregistered patients were identified using snowball method, and the estimation was based on disability-adjusted life years. Younger age groups (18-40 years) had shown 105.8 times more odds of knowledge towards tuberculosis than the older (>60 years). Moreover, tertiary levels of education had 9395.1 times more odds of knowledge towards tuberculosis compared to illiterates. The estimated economic burden was 7,731.25US$. Of the 51 tuberculosis patients, two died from the disease, resulting in 45.03 disability-adjusted life years. Communities of the study district were heard about tuberculosis, however, unaware of the cause and sources of the infection. Therefore, further strategic and continuous community-based health education and awareness should be given for effective control and prevention of tuberculosis in the study area.

ABSTRACT

A cross-sectional study was conducted on selected dairy farms in and around Jimma town, Oromia, southwestern Ethiopia from November 2019 to May 2020 to determine the seroprevalence of Leptospira interrogans serogroup Sejroe serovar Hardjo (L. hardjo). Furthermore, information was gathered on individual animal and herd level by using pretested semistructured questionnaire to assess associated risk factors. A stratified and simple random sampling procedure was used for the selection of dairy farms and individual animal's, respectively. Indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA) was used in this study to detect antibody against L. hardjo. Out of 384 animal's sera, 94 animals were seropositive against L. hardjo antibodies. From 77 dairy farms selected for the study, 57 of them were distinguished as positive for L. hardjo. The overall seroprevalence of leptospirosis caused by L. hardjo was 24.48% (95% CI: 20.18%-28.78%) and 74.03% (95% CI: 64.23%-83.82%) at individual animal and farm level, respectively. The result of multilogistic regression analysis revealed that management system (p < 0.05; OR = 4.25 (95% CI: 2.31-7.82)), hygienic status of the farm (p < 0.05; OR = 0.35 (95% CI: 0.20-0.61)), age of animals (p < 0.05; OR = 8.30 (95% CI: 1.87-36.89)), history of abortion (p < 0.05; OR = 8.37 (95% CI: 1.73-40.42)), herd size (p < 0.05; OR = 2.32 (95% CI: 1.17-4.61)), and access of rodents to the farm (p < 0.05; OR = 0.17 (95% CI: 0.03-0.86)) were significantly associated with the occurrence of L. hardjo infection. However, breed, parity, and introduction of new animals to the farm were insignificantly associated (p > 0.05). Management system of the animal, hygienic status of the farm, herd size, age of animals, previous history of abortion, and access of rodents to the farm were identified as potential risk factors of L. hardjo disease occurrence. Thus, limiting rodents contact with cattle and their feed and water as well as good sanitary practices and husbandry management should be undertaken.

ABSTRACT

A cross-sectional calf mortality study was conducted in urban and periurban dairy farms in Addis Ababa, special zones of Oromia and Amhara regions in July and August 2015. The objectives of the study were to estimate the annual mortality and to assess the major causes of calf mortality in the dairy farms. One-year retrospective data on calf mortality were collected from 330 farms by face-to-face interview using the pretested and structured questionnaire format and direct observation of farm practices. A logistic regression analysis was performed in order to identify the predictor variables associated with early calf mortality. Data were analysed using Statistical Package, Stata SE for Windows, version 12.0. The annual mean calf mortality from birth-to-weaning was reported as 18.5% (95% CI: 12.6, 24.3%). The prenatal loss due to fetal death and stillbirth was 10.1% (95% CI: 6.7, 13.6%). The overall annual loss due to fetal death and calf preweaning mortality was 26.7% (95% CI: 21.2, 32.2%). Age-specific mortality declined with increased age, and the highest mortality was recorded during the first month of life extending up to the third month of age. Disease was the most important causes of calf mortality (73.2%). Among the diseases, diarrhea (63%) and respiratory disorders (17%) were the important causes of calf mortality. Malpractices in calf management were identified, including restricted colostrum and milk feeding, poor care and supplemental feeding, and poor health management. Interventions in dairy cattle health and farm husbandry are recommended to control calf mortality.

ABSTRACT

Among tick-borne diseases, bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis are considered to be one of the most important in ruminants worldwide, causing significant economic losses in tropical and subtropical areas. This cross-sectional study was therefore undertaken from November 2016 to April 2017 with the objectives to assess the prevalence and potential risk factors associated with bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis and also to identify the vectors involved in transmission of these diseases in and around Jimma town, south western Ethiopia. A simple random sampling technique was employed for selecting a sampling unit and logistic regression was used to determine the association of hypothesized risk factors with positivity for bovine anaplasmosis and/or babesiosis. A total of 408 bovine blood samples were examined for the presence of either anaplasmosis or babesiosis by Giemsa staining technique and overall prevalence of 11.7% babesiosis and 6.1% anaplasmosis were determined. Two Babesia species (2.2% Babesia bovis and 9.8% B. bigemina) and two anaplasma species (5.1% Anaplasma marginale and 1.2% A. centrale) were identified. Even though risk factors like age, body condition, management system, sex and presence of ticks were considered, only age (p=0.006) and body condition (p=0.039) were found to be significantly associated with anaplasmosis. Moreover, multivariable logistic regression analysis showed statistically significant association of babesiosis with age (p=0.003), body condition (p=0.012) and presence of ticks (p=0.005). For both infections the mean PCV of infected animals was significantly (p<0.05) lower than non-infected animals. Similarly, the mean body temperature of infected animals was significantly (p<0.05) higher than non-infected animals. The overall 70.8% infestation of cattle with four tick species, namely Amblyomma cohaerens (58.5%) and A. variegatum (44.1%), Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) decoloratus (50.5%) and R. evertsi evertsi (12.9%) were recorded. A significant positive correlation was observed between the presence of R. evertsi evertsi (p=0.000) and R. (B). decoloratus (p=0.000) on the animals and positivity for bovine anaplasmosis. Besides, R. (B). decoloratus was found to be the only tick species which its presence on the animal was significantly correlated (p=0.000) with babesiosis positivity. Conclusively, the study revealed a moderate prevalence of bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis in the study area which need further investigations using modern serological and molecular techniques for the identification of the carriers the infections and identification of the potential vectors.
