ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze patients' preferences and behaviors towards dosing devices of oral liquid medication and the impact of pharmaceutical education on their handling practices. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out at a pharmacy. Participants were asked to answer a pre-established questionnaire about their preferences and behaviors towards oral liquid administration devices. The impact of pharmaceutical education was assessed by simulating filling a 5mL dose using a metering device of their choice. The data collected was analyzed by SPSS 20.0. RESULTS: Preferences and behaviors regarding dosing devices were variable according to the characteristics of the population. Of the 396 participants, one third continued to use household spoons and only 54% of them chose calibrated dosing devices. Pharmaceutical education had a positive impact on administration practices. CONCLUSIONS: Particular attention should be carried to dosing devices of oral liquid forms. An inventory should be drawn up to assess the quality and safety of the marketed specialties.

ABSTRACT

The authors report a case of a gastro-epiploic lymphangioma in a 29-year-old male patient presenting with epigastric cramps. Physical examination was normal. Ultrasound and abdominal CT-scan showed a cystic mass under the left lobe of the liver containing fine septations and extending to the lesser sac. At surgery, a large cystic mass was found, situated around the celiac trunk. It was adherent to the lesser curvature of the stomach and posterior surface of the antrum and extended to the lesser sac. Excision of the mass and antrectomy were performed. Histologic examination was consistent with a diagnosis of cystic lymphangioma.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of asymptomatic right diaphragm agenesis, in a 20-year-old adult hospitalized for internal bleeding. This kind of malformation is rare, particularly in adults thus it must be recognized. Imaging modalities are the main tool for diagnosis. It may be suggested by chest X-Ray US, baryum opacification and CT allow to establish a definite diagnosis depicting the herniated organs. The treatment is surgical and the prognosis is in general good.

ABSTRACT

The authors report, in a retrospective study 11 cases of thoracic extra-pulmonary hydatic cyst observed during 4 years of pneumopathology practice. They stress the rarity of this localization and the variability of the clinical data. Chest X-Ray was found no specific whereas, computed tomography led often to the right diagnosis and helped in some cases a puncture of the hydatic cyst.

ABSTRACT

We report 3 cases of extramedullary hematopoiesis with a sacrococcygeal, right obturatory hole and paravertebral dorso lumbar locations respectively in 30, 34 and 58 years old patients (two males and woman). A medullary tuberculosis was discovered in one case, a beta thalassemia in the second, and the third was classified as idiopathic. Radiologic picture often permitted to evoke the diagnosis on the aspect of a well limited multilocular tumor especially when there is a paravertebral location as in our third patient. Fine needle punction cytologic examination can permit the diagnosis and avoid surgery, except if complications occur.

ABSTRACT

Recurrent multifocal periostosis of childhood is an infrequent disease. All cases reported to date have been sporadic. A familial form affecting three siblings is reported herein. Clinical and biologic features were similar to those described in the previously reported cases. This case is of particular interest for two reasons: 1) the pattern of familial clustering suggests autosomal recessive transmission; 2) repeated CT scans were performed in these patients (but not in previously reported cases) and demonstrated early involvement of the three bone layers, suggesting panostosis rather than periostosis.

ABSTRACT

The authors report the case of two patients presenting with increased bone density and lytic lesions of the skull due to tertiary syphilis. A malignant tumor has late developed on these lesions. Only one patient was imaged with CT Scan which was very useful to determine the tumoral extension.

ABSTRACT

A new method called PAIR (Puncture-Aspiration of cyst contents--Injection of hypertonic saline solution--Reaspiration) was used as a percutaneous treatment of hydatid cysts. In 37 patients, 120 cysts were punctured. All patients had not been considered surgical candidates. The cysts were localized in the liver, peritoneum, spleen, kidneys, muscles, and bones. In 70% of patients, good results were obtained. Recurrence occurred in 5 of 120 cysts, all at the beginning of our experience when a low concentration of sodium chloride solution was injected. Moderate allergic reactions occurred during seven cyst aspirations. No anaphylactic shock, sudden deaths or dissemination of cyst contents were observed.
