ABSTRACT

Nanocellulose, a nanoscale derivative from renewable biomass sources, possesses remarkable colloidal properties in water, mechanical strength, and biocompatibility. It emerges as a promising bio-based dispersing agent for various nanomaterials in water. This mini-review explores the interaction between cellulose nanomaterials (nanocrystals or nanofibers) and water, elucidating how this may enable their potential as an eco-friendly dispersing agent. We explore the potential of nanocellulose derived from top-down processes, nanocrystals, and nanofibers for dispersing carbon nanomaterials, semiconducting oxide nanoparticles, and other nanomaterials in water. We also highlight its advantages over traditional methods by not only effectively dispersing those nanomaterials but also potentially eliminating the need for further chemical treatments or supporting stabilizers. This not only preserves the exceptional properties of nanomaterials in aqueous dispersion, but may even lead to the emergence of novel hybrid functionalities. Overall, this mini-review underscores the remarkable versatility of nanocellulose as a green dispersing agent for a variety of nanomaterials, inspiring further research to expand its potential to other nanomaterials and applications.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to analyse the diagnostic value of bone marrow aspiration (BMA) in a retrospective cohort of patients with suspected immune thrombocytopaenia (ITP). We further measure changes in the percentage of patients who underwent this study and whether testing or not was in accordance with current guidelines at the time of diagnosis. We conducted a chart review of 243 patients with ITP who underwent follow-up in our institution between 1995 and 2022. The patients were divided into historical cohorts based on the practice guidelines of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (SEHOP) and the American Society of Hematology (ASH) in place at the time of follow-up. For each case, time of disease presentation or initial diagnosis was defined as that which occurred in the first 72 h following disease onset. Based on data from the historical cohorts studied, we observed a lower total number of BMAs at diagnosis over time (p < 0.005). A gradual reduction was seen in the number of BMAs with the introduction of guidelines, including a progressively lower number of BMAs performed without indication (p < 0.05). Subsequent to the initial diagnosis, the procedure played a decisive role in only 2 patients (0.58%), allowing for a diagnosis of acquired aplastic anaemia in both cases. In both of them on diagnosis, BMA did not appear to be indicated, although subsequent analysis after 72 h raised suspicion of bone marrow failure. CONCLUSION: BMA at presentation did not significantly alter the diagnosis in our cohort of patients with an initial suspicion of ITP, although the procedure was decisive in diagnosing 2 cases of acquired aplastic anaemia during the subsequent course of the disease. Regarding the number of aspirations performed, our findings show that increased physician compliance with current guidelines reduced the rate of unnecessary BMAs. WHAT IS KNOWN: • BMA is a supplementary test for the diagnosis of ITP. • The usefulness of this invasive diagnostic procedure is not clearly stated in current guidelines. WHAT IS NEW: • Adjustments to scientific guidelines have led to a reduction in the number of BMAs performed on our patients with suspected ITP in the last 27 years. • While the risks and benefits of BMA at the time of diagnosis are unclear in patients with suspected ITP, the procedure does not contribute significant information to support the diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Substance use in adolescents has been separately related to personality traits and parental socialization styles; in this study, our objective was to study these variables in an integrated way. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in five institutes in a final sample of 331 students, excluding those with gaming disorder. The sample was stratified into three subgroups: 'no addiction', 'low risk', and 'high risk' of Substance Use Disorders (SUD). RESULTS: 12.9% of the adolescents presented a low risk of SUD, while 18.3% showed a high risk, with both being older (F = 9.16; p < 0.001) than the no addiction group. Adolescents with high risk scored lower in control and structure variables and higher in maternal and paternal indifference factors. Non-addicted subjects presented higher scores in conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness and lower scores in neuroticism. The probability of SUD increased with age (OR = 2.187; p = 0.022), sensation seeking (OR = 1.084; p < 0.001), and neuroticism (OR = 1.049; p = 0.042), while conscientiousness was a protective factor (OR = 0.930; p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: These results reflect that personality traits are directly related to the development of substance abuse in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The benefits of sport in mental health have been broadly studied. However, few studies have examined these outcomes in high-performance athletes. We aimed to analyze the state of the mental health of the Villarreal Soccer Club's first- (FD) and second-division (SD) players and the possible mediating effects of sex and professional category. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with an initial sample of 108 soccer players (final sample n = 54). Data from MINI, HARS, HDRS, BARRAT-11 and SCSRQ questionnaires were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age was 23.41 years (SD = 4.56) and 61.1% (n = 33) were men. A proportion of 24.1% (n = 13) stated that they had undergone mental health treatment, 7.4% (n = 4) had taken psychotropic drugs, and 2.1% (n = 1) had made a suicide attempt. Differences were observed between the FD and SD players in terms of the sensitivity to punishment (t = -2.2; p = 0.033), overall impulsivity (t = -3.1; p = 0.003), unplanned impulsivity (t = 3.4; p = 0.001), and the HDRS (U = -110.5; p = 0.004), HARS-Total (U = -104.0; p = 0.006) and HARS-Psychological subscale scores (U = -104.0; p = 0.001). Differences were also observed between the female and male SD players for the HARS-Somatic subscale (U = 136.5; p = 0.028). CONCLUSION: The low values obtained in the clinical scales, together with the reported psychopathological histories, suggested that the Villareal players showed better mental health than the general population.

BACKGROUND: Family history of obesity is known to increase the odds of developing childhood obesity in the offspring, but its influence in underlying molecular complications remains unexplored. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Here, we investigated a population-based cohort comprising children with obesity, with and without parental obesity (PO+, N = 20; PO-, N = 29), and lean healthy children as controls (N = 30), from whom plasma and erythrocyte samples were collected to characterize their multi-elemental profile, inflammatory status, as well as carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms. RESULTS: We found parental obesity to be associated with unhealthier outcomes in children, as reflected in increased blood insulin levels and reduced insulin sensitivity, unfavorable lipid profile, and pro-inflammatory milieu. This was accompanied by moderate alterations in the content of trace elements, including increased copper-to-zinc ratios and iron deficiency in circulation, as well as metal accumulation within erythrocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, we hypothesize that family history of obesity could be an important risk factor in modulating the characteristic multi-elemental alterations behind childhood obesity, which in turn could predispose to boost related comorbidities and metabolic complications.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Almost 2 years and five infection waves after the COVID-19 pandemic started, healthcare workers continued dealing with the pandemic situation and facing the health consequences and the mental health disorders it caused. This study aimed to evaluate the onset and progression of psychopathology as well as the role of predictor variables such as purpose in life and moral courage among healthcare workers during this time. Materials and methods: This was a longitudinal prospective study carried out with 45 Spanish healthcare workers who answered two questionnaires, the first questionnaire in April-May 2020 (T1) and the second questionnaire in September-October 2021 (T2). Results: Although 29.5% of the sample considered that their mental health had improved over this time, almost half of them (47.7%) said it had not changed, while 22.7% reported a decline in their mental health from the first time they were asked. Specifically, 46.8% presented anxiety, 23.4% depression, and 42.6% acute stress at T1, and 38.3% had anxiety, 17% depression, and 27.7% post-traumatic stress disorder at T2. Despite this, there were no differences between T1 and T2 anxiety scores (p = 0.53), although there was a decrease in depression (p = 0.03) and acute stress (p = 0.02) scores. Predictor variable outcomes such as purpose in life (p = 0.88) and moral courage (p = 0.86; p = 0.38) did not change over time, but when modelling the data, purpose in life predicted psychopathology at T1, which in turn affected the psychopathology results at T2. Conclusion: This study showed that, although psychopathology decreased over the months, its prevalence remained high. Even though the purpose in life predicted psychopathology at T1, it seems that once the psychopathology is established (T2), the factors that would improve it would be different from the protective factors that prevented its establishment, which become secondary.

BACKGROUND: The clinical guidelines for the treatment of dissociation focus primarily on psychotherapy. However, different psychoactive drugs are used in clinical practice. The use of opioid antagonists has been proposed as a therapeutic option based on the theory that dissociation might be a phenomenon mediated by dysregulation of the endogenous opioid system. OBJECTIVE: To review and meta-analyse the available evidence on the efficacy of the opioid antagonists naltrexone, naloxone, and nalmefene as treatments for dissociative symptoms and disorders. METHOD: The PRISMA guidelines were followed, and this review was registered in Prospero with reference number CRD42021280976. The search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and PubPsych databases. RESULTS: 1,798 citations were obtained. After removing duplicates and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, we included 5 comparative studies with 9 dissociation measures that had included a total of 154 participants, of whom 134 had been treated with an opioid antagonist. The results of the meta-analysis showed a treatment effect for dissociation when using opioid antagonists [pooled d = 1.46 (95% CI: 0.62-2.31)]. However, the studies we included were very heterogeneous [Q = 66.89 (p < .001)] and there may have been publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: Although more research is needed and the results must be interpreted with caution because of the limited amount of data and heterogeneity in the studies and their methodological qualities, opioid antagonists (particularly naltrexone) are promising candidates for the treatment of dissociative symptoms and showed a moderate - large effect size in reducing these symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary collaboration between general practitioner, nurses and pharmacists can favour the control of patients treated with vitamin K antagonists (VKA), increasing their safety and effectiveness. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of pharmaceutical interventions on patients treated with VKA within the framework of a Pharmacotherapeutic Follow-up service on clinical, economic and humanistic outcomes. METHODS: Controlled and randomized study in patients from two health areas of Zaragoza in treatment with VKA with Time in Therapeutic Range (TTR) according to the Rosendaal method less than 70% in the last 6 months. Patients were recruited at the pharmacy and assigned to two groups: control and intervention. A Pharmacotherapeutic Follow-up Program was established for the intervention group for 6 months. The outcome variables were INR stability, pharmacological adherence, vitamin K intake, knowledge about the use of acenocoumarol, quality of life, satisfaction with treatment, associated costs and avoided costs. A descriptive analysis was performed, and the Students' T test or Mann-Whitney U test was used for the association between quantitative variables and Chi-square or Fisher's test for qualitative variables. RESULTS: A total of 123 patients were included, 65 in the intervention group (IG) and 58 in the control group (CG). A total of 108 interventions were conducted (1.7 interventions/patient) and the most common were those related to the proper taking of medications (41.0%). In IG, TTR (p = 0.019), adherence to treatment (p = 0.038) and knowledge about acenocoumarol (p = 0.031) improved, compared to CG. A higher proportion of patients in IG achieved a TTR>65% (p = 0.024). In addition, patients whose interventions were accepted by the physician (p = 0.027) and those who received vitamin K optimization interventions (p = 0.003) achieved TTR>65% in greater proportion. CONCLUSIONS: Community pharmacist medication review, in collaboration with general practitioners improve knowledge and adherence of patients treated with oral anti-vitamin K agents and enhances the achievement of their therapeutic INR ranges. Investment needed to achieve this clinical impact is low and patient satisfaction is high. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study has been registered with Clinical Trials.gov dated 25/05/2017: NCT03154489.

ABSTRACT

Pickering emulsions (PEs) differ from conventional emulsions in the use of solid colloidal particles as stabilizing agents instead of traditional amphiphilic molecules. Nanostructured biopolymers (NBs) emerge as a promising alternative for PE stabilization owing to their remarkable biocompatibility, abundant availability, and low cost. To explore this potential, a study is herein presented, in which cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), both type I and type II allomorphs, and chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) were used for stabilizing oil-in-water PEs prepared by the use of ultrasound. Sunflower oil was selected as the oil phase as it offers the advantages of being edible, renewable, and inexpensive. By utilizing ζ-potential, static light diffraction, and visual observations, we determined the optimal oil/water ratio for each type of NB to obtain stable emulsions after 14 days. The optimized PEs were used to form bacterial nanocellulose composites through emulsion templating. To our knowledge, this study represents a pioneering work in exploiting oil-in-water PEs for this approach. Additionally, it entails the first utilization of nonmercerized type II CNCs as stabilizers for PEs, while also establishing a direct comparison among the most relevant NBs. The resulting composites exhibited a unique morphology, composed of larger pores compared to standard bacterial nanocellulose aerogels. These findings highlight the notable potential of NBs as stabilizers for PEs and their ability to generate green nanocomposites with tailored properties.

ABSTRACT

Tacrolimus (TAC) is a narrow-therapeutic-range immunosuppressant drug used after organ transplantation. A therapeutic failure is possible if drug levels are not within the therapeutic range after the first year of treatment. Pharmacogenetic variants and drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are involved. We describe a patient case of a young man (16 years old) with a renal transplant receiving therapy including TAC, mycophenolic acid (MFA), prednisone and omeprazole for prophylaxis of gastric and duodenal ulceration. The patient showed great fluctuation in TAC blood concentration/oral dose ratio, as well as pharmacotherapy adverse effects (AEs) and frequent diarrhea episodes. Additionally, decreased kidney function was found. A pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, including pharmacogenetic analysis, was carried out. The selection of the genes studied was based on the previous literature (CYP3A5, CYP3A4, POR, ABCB1, PXR and CYP2C19). A drug interaction with omeprazole was reported and the nephrologist switched to rabeprazole. A lower TAC concentration/dose ratio was achieved, and the patient's condition improved. In addition, the TTT haplotype of ATP Binding Cassette Subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1) and Pregnane X Receptor (PXR) gene variants seemed to affect TAC pharmacotherapy in the studied patient and could explain the occurrence of long-term adverse effects post-transplantation. These findings suggest that polymorphic variants and co-treatments must be considered in order to achieve the effectiveness of the immunosuppressive therapy with TAC, especially when polymedicated patients are involved. Moreover, pharmacogenetics could influence the drug concentration at the cellular level, both in lymphocyte and in renal tissue, and should be explored in future studies.

BACKGROUND: Insulin resistance (IR) is considered the main driver of obesity related metabolic complications, and is related to oxidative stress and inflammation, which in turn promote each other. There is currently no specific definition of IR in children, rather, that for adult population is used by pediatric endocrinologists instead. Altered insulin secretion dynamics are associated with worse metabolic profiles and type 2 diabetes mellitus development, thus we aimed to test whether insulin response relates to oxidative stress and inflammation in children. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study, including 132 children classified as follows: 33 children without obesity (Lean); 42 with obesity but no IR according to the American Diabetes Association criteria for adults (OBIR-); 25 with obesity and IR and an early insulin response to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) (EP-OBIR +); 32 with obesity, IR, and a late insulin peak (LP-OBIR +); and studied variables associated with lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation and inflammasome activation. RESULTS: The measured parameters of children with obesity, IR, and an early insulin response were similar to those of children with obesity but without IR. It was late responders who presented an impaired antioxidant system and elevated oxidative damage in erythrocytes and plasma, and inflammasome activation at their white blood cells, despite lower classical inflammation markers. Increased uric acid levels seems to be one of the underlying mechanisms for inflammasome activation. CONCLUSIONS: It is insulin response to an OGTT that identifies children with obesity suffering oxidative stress and inflammasome activation more specifically. Uric acid could be mediating this pathological inflammatory response by activating NLRP3 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

ABSTRACT

Nanoparticles (NPs) of conjugated polymers in intimate contact with sheets of graphene oxide (GO) constitute a promising class of water-dispersible nanohybrid materials of increased interest for the design of sustainable and improved optoelectronic thin-film devices, revealing properties exclusively pre-established upon their liquid-phase synthesis. In this context, we report for the first time the preparation of a P3HTNPs-GO nanohybrid employing a miniemulsion synthesis approach, whereby GO sheets dispersed in the aqueous phase serve as a surfactant. We show that this process uniquely favors a quinoid-like conformation of the P3HT chains of the resulting NPs well located onto individual GO sheets. The accompanied change in the electronic behavior of these P3HTNPs, consistently confirmed by the photoluminescence and Raman response of the hybrid in the liquid and solid states, respectively, as well as by the properties of the surface potential of isolated individual P3HTNPs-GO nano-objects, facilitates unprecedented charge transfer interactions between the two constituents. While the electrochemical performance of nanohybrid films is featured by fast charge transfer processes, compared to those taking place in pure P3HTNPs films, the loss of electrochromic effects in P3HTNPs-GO films additionally indicates the unusual suppression of polaronic charge transport processes typically encountered in P3HT. Thus, the established interface interactions in the P3HTNPs-GO hybrid enable a direct and highly efficient charge extraction channel via GO sheets. These findings are of relevance for the sustainable design of novel high-performance optoelectronic device structures based on water-dispersible conjugated polymer nanoparticles.

Background: Gaming Disorder is increasingly common in adolescents. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between parenting, personality traits, and Gaming Disorder. Methods: An observational and cross-sectional study in six secondary schools of Castelló, obtaining a final sample of 397 students. Results: Adolescents with Gaming Disorder had lower scores in Adolescent Affection-Communication (F = 8.201; p < 0.001), Father's Warmth (F = 3.459; p = 0.028), and Father's Acceptance/Involvement (F = 5.467; p = 0.003), and higher scores in Mother's Revoking Privileges (F = 4.277; p = 0.034) and Father's Indifference (F = 7.868; p = 0.002) than healthy participants. Male sex was a risk factor for Gaming Disorder (OR = 12.221; p = 0.004), while Adolescent Affection-Communication (OR = 0.908; p = 0.001) and Agreeableness (OR = 0.903; p = 0.022) were protective factors. Data modeling described the protective effect that Adolescent Affection-Communication had on Gaming Disorder, which was both directly (B = -0.20; p < 0.001) and indirectly mediated by Neuroticism (B = -0.20; p < 0.001), while Neuroticism itself was a risk factor for Gaming Disorder (B = 0.50; p < 0.001). Conclusion: These results reflect that Parental style with low affection and communication was directly and indirectly related to the Gaming Disorder, as well as male sex and personality trait of Neuroticism.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have aroused increasing interest owing to their renewable origin and excellent properties derived from their size and morphology. Based on their chain orientation, CNCs can be prepared as two main allomorphs (I or II). However, achieving pure CNC allomorphs still requires enhanced control on the CNCs synthesis process and improved understanding of the involved reaction parameters. In this work, we study in detail a set of parameters for CNC synthesis using one-pot acid hydrolysis and evaluate their influence on the outcome with respect to yield, purity, and repeatability. We also demonstrate that a fast, nondestructive, and accurate methodology based on dynamic light scattering is an efficient alternative to the usual structural analysis of the synthesis outcome. Finally, we provide an improved protocol to reliably obtain each allomorph with mass yields of 25% for type I and 40% for type II. Emphasis is put on the reduction of the environmental impact and the overall preparation time.

ABSTRACT

Covalent functionalization of tungsten disulfide (WS2 ) with photo- and electro-active nickel-porphyrin (NiP) is reported. Exfoliated WS2 interfacing NiP moieties with 1,2-dithiolane linkages is assayed in the oxygen evolution reaction under both dark and illuminated conditions. The hybrid material presented, WS2 -NiP, is fully characterized with complementary spectroscopic, microscopic, and thermal techniques. Standard yet advanced electrochemical techniques, such as linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and calculation of the electrochemically active surface area, are used to delineate the catalytic profile of WS2 -NiP. In-depth study of thin films with transient photocurrent and photovoltage response assays uncovers photo-enhanced electrocatalytic behavior. The observed photo-enhanced electrocatalytic activity of WS2 -NiP is attributed to the presence of Ni centers coordinated and stabilized by the N4 motifs of tetrapyrrole rings at the tethered porphyrin derivative chains, which work as photoreceptors. This pioneering work opens wide routes for water oxidation, further contributing to the development of non-noble metal electrocatalysts.
