ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer represents 3.8% of cancer deaths worldwide. For most prostate cancer cells to grow, androgens need to bind to a cellular protein called the androgen receptor (AR). This study aims to demonstrate the expression of five microRNAs (miRs) and its influence on the AR formation in patients from the northern region of Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty-four tissue samples were investigated, including nodular prostatic hyperplasia (NPH) and acinar prostatic adenocarcinoma (CaP). Five miRs (27a-3p, 124, 130a, 488-3p, and 506) were quantified using the TaqMan® Real Time PCR method and AR was measured using Western blotting. RESULTS: Levels of miRs 124, 130a, 488-3p, and 506 were higher in NPH samples. Conversely, in the CaP cases, higher levels of miR 27a-3p and AR were observed. CONCLUSION: In the future, these microRNAs may be tested as markers of CaP at the serum level. The relative expression of AR was 20% higher in patients with prostate cancer, which suggests its potential as a biomarker for prostate malignancy.

ABSTRACT

The presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) was evaluated in 65 samples of prostate tumours and six samples of prostates with benign prostatic hyperplasia from individuals from Northern Brazil. We used a highly sensitive test, the Linear Array HPV Genotyping Test, to detect 37 high and low-risk HPV types. In this study, only 3% of tumour samples showed HPV infection. Our findings support the conclusion that, despite the high incidence of HPV infection in the geographic regions studied, HPV was not associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer. To our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating the frequency of HPV detection in prostatic tissue of individuals from Brazil.

ABSTRACT

To report the case of a patient with true hermaphroditism, throughmultidisciplinary care and underwent bilateral mammoplasty and hysterectomy. Final considerations: The true hermaphroditism is an uncommon condition and most of these patients have no access to multidisciplinary approach. In the reported case, the patients was admitted with menuria and gynecomastia, and had a normal male external genitalia. He had a histopathological diagnostic of ovotestis and radiological examinations revealed presence of uterus and ovary. The surgical correction and the monitoring of various specialties, it provided an uneventful recovery, resolution of clinical complaints and resumed the self-esteem.

ABSTRACT

Case Report: the authors report a case of a seven-year-old child, with isosexual precocity, in who had performed a left radical inguinal orchiectomy, due to difficulties in precise diagnosis during surgery. Final Considerations: manifestations of endocrine imbalance could help in diagnosis, permitting further children benefit least radical procedures. No clinical or endocrine relapse after 1 year follow-up.
