ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of the inclusion of extruded linseed and hazelnut skin on fatty acid (FA) metabolism in finishing lambs. Forty lambs were divided into 4 groups and fed for 60 d with: a conventional cereal-based diet, or the same diet with 8% of extruded linseed, or 15% of hazelnut skin, or 4% of linseed plus 7.5% of hazelnut skin as partial replacement of maize. Dietary treatments did not affect growth performances, carcass traits, and ruminal fermentation. The combined effect of linseed and hazelnut skin enriched the intramuscular fat with health promoting FA. Particularly, increases in α-linolenic acid (3.75-fold), and very long-chain n-3 poly-unsaturated FA (+ 40%) were attributed to the supplementation with linseed, rich in α-linolenic acid. In addition, increases in rumenic (+ 33%), and vaccenic (+ 59%) acids were attributed to hazelnut skin tannins modulating ruminal biohydrogenation and accumulating intermediate metabolites. The simultaneous inclusion of linseed and hazelnut skin can be a profitable strategy for enriching the intramuscular fat of lambs with health promoting FA, without adverse effects on ruminal fermentation and animal performance.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the effect of hazelnut skin dietary supplementation on antioxidant status and cytokine profile was evaluated in growing lambs. A total of 22 male lambs at the age of 2 months, balanced for their initial live weight (15.33 ± SD 1.79 kg), were selected and allocated into two experimental groups: the control group (CON) receiving a maize-barley-based concentrated diet, and the hazelnut group (HS) receiving supplementation with hazelnut skin (150 g/kg on the dry matter) as a maize substitute for the concentrate diet. The experiment lasted for 56 days. Peripheral blood was collected at 7, 35, and 56 days of the experiment. The free radical scavenging activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, the total antioxidant capacity assay (TAC), the reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) were determined in plasma. The secretion of IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-10 cytokines was also determined by ELISA. The DPPH was affected by the interaction between feeding strategy and time of sampling (p = 0.039) with a higher level of DPPH at 7 days in the HS group than the CON group. The time of sampling affected the levels of plasma TAC (p = 0.016), while the ROS/RNS levels showed a higher value in the HS group (p < 0.001), on average. The antioxidant/oxidant index, which combines the TAC and the ROS/RNS levels, was not affected by the inclusion of hazelnut skin in the diet (p = 0.394). The cytokine profile showed a lower IL-6 secretion at both 35 and 56 days than at 7 days, on average. Furthermore, the feeding treatment affected the IL-1ß level, showing a lower level in the HS group than in the CON group on average. Lambs from the HS group had higher IL-10 plasma levels than the CON group at 7 days of the experiment. The present data highlight an antioxidant effect and a modulatory role in the cytokine profile of HS supplementation in growing lambs.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary hazelnut skin (HNS), a by-product of confectionery industry, on the oxidative stability of lamb meat. Twenty-two finishing lambs were randomly assigned to 2 groups and fed ad libitum for 56 days on different concentrate-based diets: one control and one experimental, in which 150 g/kg of corn was replaced by HNS. After slaughter, the fat-soluble vitamins content and hydrophilic antioxidant capacity were assessed in fresh meat, as well as color, lipid and protein stability over 7 days of shelf-life trial. Dietary HNS increased (P < 0.001) the tocopherols content of meat and reduced (P < 0.001) lipid oxidation during 7 days of refrigerated storage. Meat from lambs fed HNS showed different (P < 0.05) instrumental color parameters. No diet effect (P > 0.05) was observed on the development of metmyoglobin, hydroperoxides, thiol groups, and carbonyl groups. Feeding HNS to lambs improves the oxidative stability of raw meat by delaying lipid oxidation thanks to the antioxidant molecules (tocopherols and phenolic compounds) contained in this by-product.

ABSTRACT

Anaerobic digestion is a consolidated biotechnology able to produce renewable energy from biomasses. In the European countries, quick growth of biogas production from different organic matrices including wastes has been observed. In relation to the characteristics and quantity of the anaerobic digestion of feedstock, there are different technologies, advantages and criticisms. An accurate occupational risk assessment and development of management tools for green jobs involved in the anaerobic digestion plants are due. The aim of this work is to assess the aerosol exposure for such workers, focusing on the bioaerosol risk. Full scale plants for the treatment of organic municipal waste, waste water treatment sludge, agro zootechnical and food producing byproducts were involved for this purpose. The bioaerosol levels were monitored during activities through culturing and biomolecular methods; moreover, the sub-fractionated PM10 and carried endotoxins were measured in different plant areas. Global microbial contamination is higher (>5000 UFC/m3) in the area where organic wastes are handled and pretreated, both for organic municipal waste plants - with a bacterial prevalence - and agro zootechnical plants - with a fungi prevalence. Moreover, the microbial contamination is higher where organic municipal waste is present in respect to other biomasses (ANOVA p < 0.01). Numerous pathogens are carried by the aerosol. HAdV-4 presence is lower than LOQ (50 gene copies/m3) in all the samples. Environmental PM10 reached the 280 µg/m3 level including PM3 for 78%. Endotoxin pollution overtakes the 90 EU/m3 limit sporadically. Personal PM4.5 reached 10 mg/m3 only for maintenance technicians in the pretreatment area for organic municipal waste. The risk can be evaluated under a quantitative and qualitative point of view highlighting risk management improvement for anaerobic digestion plants.
