ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nature has bestowed mother Earth with an array of herbals utilized as therapeutics for various human ailments since the origin of life. Bryonia laciniosa (family: Cucurbitaceae) is one such herb, which finds its mention in various traditional systems of medicine and has attracted current researchers due to its significant therapeutic value. OBJECTIVE: The current article aims to present a literature metasynthesis on Bryonia laciniosa. METHODS: The authors performed scholarly searches for peer-reviewed findings on Bryonia laciniosa and incorporated all the data related to the phytochemical and therapeutic profile of the drug. RESULTS: This compilation comprises of Phytochemical and Pharmacological profile of Bryonia laciniosa elaborating its traditional significance and recent researches related to its biological activities. The plant exhibits its potential as an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, anticonvulsant, anti-asthmatic, anticancer, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and aphrodisiac agent. It also displays its benefits in wound healing and ulcerative colitis. CONCLUSION: The presence of flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids, anthocyanins, coumarins, alkaloids, polyphenols, tannins and emodins in this plant is responsible for its various pharmacological activities. The retrospective study provides direction for existing research as well as future studies to support the domain of pharmaceutical and medical sciences.

ABSTRACT

Current scenario depicts that world has been clenched by COVID-19 pandemic. Inevitably, public health and safety measures could be undertaken in order to dwindle the infection threat and mortality. Moreover, to overcome the global menace and drawing out world from moribund stage, there is an exigency for social distancing and quarantines. Since December, 2019, coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) have came into existence and up till now world is still in the state of shock. At this point of time, COVID-19 has entered perilous phase, creating havoc among individuals, and this has been directly implied due to enhanced globalisation and ability of the virus to acclimatize at all conditions. The unabated transmission is due to lack of drugs, vaccines and therapeutics against this viral outbreak. But research is still underway to formulate the vaccines or drugs by this means, as scientific communities are continuously working to unravel the pharmacologically active compounds that might offer a new insight for curbing infections and pandemics. Therefore, the topical COVID-19 situation highlights an immediate need for effective therapeutics against SARS-CoV-2. Towards this effort, the present review discusses the vital concepts related to COVID-19, in terms of its origin, transmission, clinical aspects and diagnosis. However, here, we have formulated the novel concept hitherto, ancient means of traditional medicines or herbal plants to beat this pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Steroids are a pivotal class of hormones with a key role in growth modulation and signal transduction in multicellular organisms. Synthetic steroids are widely used to cure large array of viral, fungal, bacterial, and cancerous infections. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a natural collection of phytosterols, which have structural similarity with animal steroids. BRs are dispersed universally throughout the plant kingdom. These plant steroids are well known to modulate a plethora of physiological responses in plants leading to improvement in quality as well as yield of food crops. Moreover, they have been found to play imperative role in stress-fortification against various stresses in plants. Over a decade, BRs have conquered worldwide interest due to their diverse biological activities in animal systems. Recent studies have indicated anticancerous, antiangiogenic, antiviral, antigenotoxic, antifungal, and antibacterial bioactivities of BRs in the animal test systems. BRs inhibit replication of viruses and induce cytotoxic effects on cancerous cell lines. Keeping in view the biological activities of BRs, this review is an attempt to update the information about prospects of BRs in biomedical and clinical application.
