ABSTRACT

High-quality optical resonant cavities require low optical loss, typically on the scale of parts per million. However, unintended micron-scale contaminants on the resonator mirrors that absorb the light circulating in the cavity can deform the surface thermoelastically and thus increase losses by scattering light out of the resonant mode. The point absorber effect is a limiting factor in some high-power cavity experiments, for example, the Advanced LIGO gravitational-wave detector. In this Letter, we present a general approach to the point absorber effect from first principles and simulate its contribution to the increased scattering. The achievable circulating power in current and future gravitational-wave detectors is calculated statistically given different point absorber configurations. Our formulation is further confirmed experimentally in comparison with the scattered power in the arm cavity of Advanced LIGO measured by in situ photodiodes. The understanding presented here provides an important tool in the global effort to design future gravitational-wave detectors that support high optical power and thus reduce quantum noise.

ABSTRACT

The kinetic analyses are quite important when it comes to understanding the particle behavior in any device as they start to deviate from a continuum nature. In the present study, kinetic simulations are performed using the particle-in-cell method to analyze the behavior of ions inside a cylindrical inertial electrostatic confinement fusion (IECF) device which is being developed as a tabletop neutron source. Here, the lighter ions, like deuterium, are accelerated by applying an electrostatic field between the chamber wall (anode) and the cathode (cylindrical gridded wire), placed at the center of the device. The plasma potential profiles obtained from the simulated results indicate the formation of multiple potential well structures inside the cathode grid depending upon the applied cathode potential (from -1 to -5 kV). The ion density at the core region of the device is found to be of the order of 10^{16}m^{-3}, which closely resembles the experimental observations. Spatial variation of ion energy distribution function has been measured in order to observe the characteristics of ions at different cathode voltages. Finally, the simulated results are compared and found to be in good agreement with the experimental profiles. The present analysis can serve as a reference guide to optimize the technological parameters of the discharge process in IECF devices.

ABSTRACT

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) has been directly detecting gravitational waves from compact binary mergers since 2015. We report on the first use of squeezed vacuum states in the direct measurement of gravitational waves with the Advanced LIGO H1 and L1 detectors. This achievement is the culmination of decades of research to implement squeezed states in gravitational-wave detectors. During the ongoing O3 observation run, squeezed states are improving the sensitivity of the LIGO interferometers to signals above 50 Hz by up to 3 dB, thereby increasing the expected detection rate by 40% (H1) and 50% (L1).

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To investigate the relationship between HbA1c and glucose in people with co-existing liver disease and diabetes awaiting transplant, and in those with diabetes but no liver disease. METHODS: HbA1c and random plasma glucose data were collected for 125 people with diabetes without liver disease and for 29 people awaiting liver transplant with diabetes and cirrhosis. Cirrhosis was caused by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis C, alcoholic liver disease, hereditary haemochromatosis, polycystic liver/kidneys, cryptogenic/non-cirrhotic portal hypertension and α-1-antitrypsin-related disease. RESULTS: The median (interquartile range) age of the diabetes with cirrhosis group was 55 (49-63) years compared to 60 (50-71) years (P=0.13) in the group without cirrhosis. In the diabetes with cirrhosis group there were 21 men (72%) compared with 86 men (69%) in the group with diabetes and no cirrhosis (P=0.82). Of the group with diabetes and cirrhosis, 27 people (93%) were of white European ethnicity, two (7%) were South Asian and none was of Afro-Caribbean/other ethnicity compared with 94 (75%), 16 (13%), 10 (8%)/5 (4%), respectively, in the group with diabetes and no cirrhosis (P=0.20). Median (interquartile range) HbA1c was 41 (32-56) mmol/mol [5.9 (5.1-7.3)%] vs 61 (52-70) mmol/mol [7.7 (6.9-8.6)%] (P<0.001), respectively, in the diabetes with cirrhosis group vs the diabetes without cirrhosis group. The glucose concentrations were 8.4 (7.0-11.2) mmol/l vs 7.3 (5.2-11.5) mmol/l (P=0.17). HbA1c was depressed by 20 mmol/mol (1.8%; P<0.001) in 28 participants with cirrhosis but elevated by 28 mmol/mol (2.6%) in the participant with α-1-antitrypsin disorder. Those with cirrhosis and depressed HbA1c had fewer larger erythrocytes, and higher red cell distribution width and reticulocyte count. This was reflected in the positive association of glucose with mean cell volume (r=0.39) and haemoglobin level (r=0.49) and the negative association for HbA1c (r=-0.28 and r=-0.26, respectively) in the diabetes group with cirrhosis. CONCLUSION: HbA1c is not an appropriate test for blood glucose in people with cirrhosis and diabetes awaiting transplant as it reflects altered erythrocyte presentation.

ABSTRACT

The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is a way of making supra-molecular assembly in ultrathin films with a controlled layered structure and crystal parameter, which have many envisioned technological applications for optical and molecular electronic devices as well as signal processing and transformation. Probably LB technique is the best method to manipulate materials at molecular level and provides a scope to realize the molecular electronics in reality. In this review article, we have discussed about the general introduction of LB technique and recent development on LB and related system including (i) LB methodology, (ii) characterizations of LB films, (iii) LB films and molecular electronics, (iv) historical review of LB films, (v) research and applications including fundamental research and application towards devices.

ABSTRACT

Our aim was to assess the outcome in patients with total wrist arthroplasty performed for end stage wrist osteoarthritis. We analysed the ranges of motion of operated and un-operated wrists using a flexible electrogoniometer during the Sollerman hand function test. We assessed grip strength with a digital dynamometer and completed patient reported outcome scores more than one year post-operatively. We reviewed 12 patients with a mean age of 64 (range 48-82) years. The flexion-extension arc was 72% and radioulnar deviation arc was 53% of the un-operated side but the total range of motion (area of circumduction) was 43% of the un-operated side and only 20% of the circumduction in age and gender-matched normal volunteers. Peak grip strength was 68% of the un-operated side. The patients reported good outcome with mean Michigan Hand Questionnaire (MHQ) scores of 56 (range 25-84) and mean Patient Evaluation Measure (PEM) scores of 39 (range 20-68). Patients completed the activities of Sollerman hand function test in twice the time (6 min) as required for a normal volunteer (2.8 min). The circumduction ellipses were narrow and central with limited radio-ulnar deviation and small mean areas of motion during activities of daily living.

ABSTRACT

Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer between two dyes Fluorescein and Rhodamine 6G were investigated in solution in the presence and absence of Zinc oxide nanoparticle. Zinc oxide nanostructure is used as the fluorescence enhancing agent for the present study since donor (Fluorescein) fluorescence increase significantly in presence of nanoparticle. Accordingly, the energy transfer efficiency in the presence of nanoparticle increases. The maximum efficiency was 69% for acceptor (Rhodamine 6G) concentration of 0.75×10-5M. The energy transfer efficiency was found to be pH sensitive and it varies from 4.15% to 90.00% in mixed dye solution for a change in pH from 1.5 to 10.0. With proper calibration it is possible to use the present system under investigation to sense pH which is better with respect to our previous reported results [Spectrochim. Acta Part A. 149 (2015) 143-149] as it can sense a wide range of pH and with better sensitivity.

ABSTRACT

Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer between two organic dyes Fluorescein and Rhodamine 6G was investigated in aqueous solution in presence and absence of synthetic clay laponite. Spectroscopic studies suggest that both the dyes were present mainly as monomer in solution. Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer occurred from Fluorescein to Rhodamine 6G in solutions. Energy transfer efficiency increases in presence of laponite and the maximum efficiency was 72.00% in aqueous laponite dispersion. Energy transfer efficiency was found to be pH sensitive. It has been demonstrated that with proper calibration it is possible to use the present system under investigation to sense pH over a wide range from 1.5 to 8.0.

ABSTRACT

This communication reports our investigations on the Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) between two laser dyes Acriflavine and Rhodamine B in absence and presence of DNA at different pH. It has been observed that energy transfer efficiency is largely affected by the presence of DNA as well as the pH of the system. It is well known that with increase in pH, DNA conformation changes from double stranded to single stranded (denaturation) and finally form random coil. Based on our experimental results two different types of molecular logic gates namely, XOR and OR logic have been demonstrated which can be used to have an idea about DNA conformation in solution.

ABSTRACT

Acridine orange (AO) forms dimer even in aqueous solution. In layer-by-layer (LbL) film of AO dimeric sites predominate over monomeric sites. This communication reports the control of H-dimer of AO in LbL film by incorporating nano clay platelets. This was studied by using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopic (AFM) image of the LbL film was taken to confirm the presence of nano clay platelets in the LbL film.

ABSTRACT

This communication reports the increase in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency between two laser dyes in the presence of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Two types of molecular logic gates have been designed where DNA acts as input signal and fluorescence intensity of different bands are taken as output signal. Use of these logic gates as a DNA sensor has been demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

This work reports the adsorption kinetics of a highly fluorescent laser dye rhodamine B (RhB) in a preformed stearic acid (SA) Langmuir monolayer. The reaction kinetics was studied by surface pressure-time (π-t) curve at constant area and in situ fluorescence imaging microscopy (FIM). Increase in surface pressure (at constant area) with time as well as increase in surface coverage of monolayer film at air-water interface provide direct evidence for the interaction. ATR-FTIR spectra also supported the interaction and consequent complexation in the complex films. UV-vis absorption and Fluorescence spectra of the complex Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films confirm the presence of RhB molecules in the complex films transferred onto solid substrates. The outcome of this work clearly shows successful incorporation of RhB molecules into SA matrix without changing the photophysical characteristics of the dye, thus making the dye material as LB compatible.

In this paper we report the effect of the incorporation of nano-dimensional clay platelets, laponite, on the J-aggregation of a thiacyanine dye N,N'-dioctadecyl thiacyanine perchlorate (NK) assembled into Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers. pi-A isotherms and atomic force microscopic studies confirm the successful incorporation of clay platelets into the Langmuir monolayer of NK. J-aggregates of NK remain present in LB films lifted at lower as well as higher surface pressures in the absence of laponite clay platelets. However, with the incorporation of clay platelets, J-aggregates are formed only in LB films lifted at higher surface pressure of 30 mN/m and totally absent in the films lifted at lower surface pressures of 10 and 15 mN/m. This may be due to the formation of nano-trapping level by overlapping of clay platelets at higher surface pressure. NK molecules may get squeezed to these nano-trapping to form J-aggregates.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Various drugs are administered intraarticularly to provide postoperative analgesia after arthroscopic knee surgery, of which opioids and alpha2 agonists could be of particular interest. METHODS: Sixty patients undergoing elective knee arthroscopy were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 30). Group R received 19 ml of 0.25% ropivacaine and 1 ml of isotonic saline (total volume 20 ml) intraarticularly. Group RD received 100 microg (1 ml) of dexmedetomidine added to 19 ml of 0.25% ropivacaine intra-articularly (total volume 20 ml). Analgesic effect was evaluated by measuring pain intensity (VAS score) and duration of analgesia. RESULTS: A longer delay was observed between intraarticular injection of study medication and first requirement of supplementary analgesic in group RD (10.84 +/- 2.6 hours) compared to group R (5.38 +/- 1.4 hours). Total consumption of fentanyl citrate in postoperative period was significantly less in group RD. No significant side effects were noted. CONCLUSION: Dexmedetomidine, added as adjunct to ropivacaine in patients undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, improve the quality and duration of postoperative analgesia.

ABSTRACT

Dysnatraemic disorders are becoming more common with increased use of biochemical tests in routine practice. Although hyponatraemia is generally much commoner than hypernatraemia, the latter is found in a variety of clinical situations. This review article aims to explain the approach to assessment and strategies for management of hypernatraemia, complications of its treatment and the steps that can be taken for prevention of recurrence.

In this communication we investigate two dyes N,N'-dioctadecyl thiacyanine perchlorate (NK) and octadecyl rhodamine B chloride (RhB) in Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films with or with out a synthetic clay laponite. Observed changes in isotherms of RhB in absence and presence of nano-clay platelets indicate the incorporation of clay platelets onto RhB-clay hybrid films. AFM images confirm the incorporation of clay into hybrid films. FRET is observed in clay dispersion and LB films with and without clay. Efficiency of energy transfer is maximum in LB films with clay.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: A prospective hospital based blinded study was carried out in an orthopedics department in a medical college hospital of Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with the objective of assessing the role of pre-operative high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) level in predicting postoperative complications in replacement arthroplasty. METHODS: One hundred and twenty one study subjects were selected. The blood collected in preoperative, perioperative and postoperative states were stored and finally analyzed after the data collection was over after the stipulated follow-up time of post operative Day-14. The patients were divided into two groups according to baseline hsCRP level < 3 mg/dl and > 3 mg/dl. The other preoperative parameters measured were found to be statistically comparable. RESULTS: Among important findings, operative time was significantly higher in the group with hsCRP > 3 mg/dl, postoperative complication rate was also significantly more in that group. Postoperative complication in Day-7 though quite high among both the groups (45% and 50.9%), the difference was not statistically significant. Comparison of hsCRP levels at baseline, perioperative, postoperative D7 and D14 also showed no significant changes. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that high hsCRP level (> 3 mg/dl), in patients with apparently no other risk factors may be at higher risk of developing complications after post operative D14 of replacement arthroplasty and operative time also significantly increases with high baseline hsCRP level.

ABSTRACT

This communication reports the formation and characterization of self-assembled films of a low molecular weight anionic dye amaranth and polycation poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) by electrostatic alternating layer-by-layer (LBL) adsorption. It was observed that there was almost no material loss occurred during adsorption process. The UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of amaranth solution reveal that with the increase in amaranth concentration in solution, the aggregated species starts to dominate over the monomeric species. New aggregated band at 600 nm was observed in amaranth-PAH mixture solution absorption spectrum. A new broad low intense band at the longer wavelength region, in the amaranth-PAH mixture solution fluorescence spectrum was observed due to the closer association of amaranth molecule while tagged into the polymer backbone of PAH and consequent formation of aggregates. The broad band system in the 650-750 nm region in the fluorescence spectra of different layered LBL films changes in intensity distribution among various bands within itself, with changing layer number and at 10 bilayer LBL films the longer wavelength band at 710 nm becomes prominent. Existence of dimeric or higher order n-meric species in the LBL films was confirmed by excitation spectroscopic studies. Almost 45 min was required to complete the interaction between amaranth and PAH molecules in the one-bilayer LBL film.
