ABSTRACT

The biodiversity of aboveground plants and belowground microbes is key for plant communities resisting exotic plant invasion. Whether the soil legacy effects after the invasion are related to the diversity of the invaded community is less studied. Soils from invaded communities were collected and potted to investigate the effects of the invasive community's legacy on the biomass allocation of plants that later grew in these soils. The plots where native plants were present had relatively high nutrient levels (except for available nitrogen) compared to the monodominance communities invaded by Chromolaena odorata. This also indirectly suggests that the severe invasion of C. odorata depleted the nutrients in the soil to a greater extent. When soils were from communities with only C. odorata or one native plant, their biotic legacies showed a significantly positive effect on biomass accumulation of subsequent invasive plants, but this positive effect became negative when more than two native plants were present in the invaded community. This result indicated that the effect of biological resistance increases with the number increase of native species in the invaded communities. The soil legacy effect of the invaded communities on subsequent plants depended on the diversity of native plants. This study can provide insights into the mechanisms of soil biological resistance to exotic plant invasion and provide a theoretical basis for the removal of soil legacy effects after the exotic plant invasion.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hyperoside (Hyp) is a flavonoid substance extracted from plants, which has the functions of anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidation. In the previous study, we found that Hyp reduced the injury of rat retinal vascular endothelial cells (RVECs) induced by H2O2. METHOD: In the present research, we evaluated the protective effect of Hyp on the pathological damage of retina caused by high glucose of diabetes mellitus (DM) in in vitro and in vivo experiments. The effect of Hyp on cell viability, oxidative stress level, and apoptosis of RVECs was assessed. RESULTS: Hyp significantly reduced the of RVECs damage, oxidative stress level, and cell apoptosis induced by high glucose in vitro. In DM model rats, Hyp treatment could significantly reduce blood glucose levels and the pathological damage of retina caused by DM and increase the proliferation of RVECs while exerting the inhibition on apoptotic activity. Furthermore, Hyp treatment decreased the expressions of apoptotic proteins including caspase-3, caspase-9, and Bax in RVECs of DM rats, while increased the expression of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. CONCLUSION: Hyp may have protective effect on diabetes-induced retinopathy by reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting cell damage, and apoptosis induced by high glucose.

ABSTRACT

This article describes a peer support project developed and carried out by a group of experienced mental health professionals, organized to offer peer psychological support from overseas to healthcare professionals on the frontline of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, China. This pandemic extremely challenged the existing health care systems and caused severe mental distress to frontline healthcare workers. The authors describe the infrastructure of the team and a novel model of peer support and crisis intervention that utilized a popular social media application on smartphone. Such a model for intervention that can be used elsewhere in the face of current global pandemic, or future disaster response.
