ABSTRACT

In this study, Er-doped CoAl2O4 nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized via co-precipitation. All the NCs were crystallized in the form of a single phase with a spinel structure and Er3+ ions replaced Al3+ ions in the formation of the CoAl2-xErxO4 alloy structure. The optical characteristics of the Er3+ ion-doped CoAl2O4 NCs were thoroughly investigated by analyzing both the UV-VIS and photoluminescence spectra, using the Judd-Ofelt theory. The effect of Er doping content on the luminescent properties of the CoAl2O4 pigment (using lasers emitting at wavelengths of 413 and 978 nm) has been studied. The values of Judd-Oflet intensity parameters (Ω2, Ω4, and Ω6) were determined from the absorption spectra using the least square fitting method. The J-O parameters were calculated and compared with those of other host materials; the values of the Ω2, Ω4, and Ω6 parameters decreased with an increase in Er concentration. This suggests that the rigidity and local symmetry of the host materials become weaker as the concentration of Er3+ ions increases. The highest value of the Ω2 parameter, when compared with Ω4 and Ω6, suggests that the vibrational frequencies in the given samples are relatively low. The upconversion fluorescence phenomenon was observed and explained in detail under an excitation wavelength of 978 nm when the excitation power was varied.

ABSTRACT

Tunable copper doped Zn1-x Cd x S alloy quantum dots (QDs) were successfully synthesized by the wet chemical method. A one-step method is developed to synthesize doped ternary QDs which is more preferable than a two-step method. The influence of experimental parameters like the Zn/Cd ratio and Cu dopant concentration has been investigated using various spectroscopic techniques like UV-visible, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The absorption and emission properties can be tuned by changing the concentration of components of the ternary QDs. The high concentration of dopant completely quenched the emission of the ternary QDs. EDX gives confirmation of the elemental composition of the synthesized samples. The obtained results suggest the successful doping of the ternary QDs. Interestingly, the study results revealed that the crystal structure (ZB and/or WZ) and the dual emission of the Cu-doped Zn1-x Cd x Se alloy QDs could be controlled by varying the dopant concentration and chemical composition of the host. Doping also leads to enhancement in emission properties and provides more stability to ternary QDs. The enhancement in the photoluminescence (PL) decay lifetime of Cu-doped ternary QDs can be advantageous for optoelectronic and biosensor applications.

ABSTRACT

In this study, natural radioactivity in surface soils of Vietnam and external dose assessment to human population, deduced from activities of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K nuclides, were determined. From 528 soil samples collected in 63 provinces of Vietnam, including five centrally governed cities, the average activities were obtained and equal to 42.77 ± 18.15 Bq kg(-1) for (226)Ra, 59.84 ± 19.81 Bq kg(-1) for (232)Th and 411.93 ± 230.69 Bq kg(-1) for (40)K. The outdoor absorbed dose rates (OADRs) in air at 1 m above the ground level for 63 provinces were calculated, and their average value was 71.72 ± 24.72 nGy h(-1), with a range from 17.45 to 149.40 nGy h(-1). The population-weighted OADR of Vietnam was 66.70 nGy h(-1), which lies in the range of 18-93 nGy h(-1) found in the World. From the OADRs obtained, it was estimated that the outdoor annual effective dose and indoor annual effective dose to the population were 0.082  and 0.458 mSv, which are higher than the corresponding values 0.07 and 0.41 mSv, respectively, of the World. The radium equivalent activity Ra(eq) and the external hazard index H(ex) of surface soils of Vietnam are lower than the corresponding permissible limits of 370 Bq kg(-1) and 1, respectively. Therefore, soil from Vietnam is safe for the human population when it is used as a building material.

ABSTRACT

Radionuclides from the reactor accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant were observed in the surface air at stations in Hanoi, Dalat, and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) in Vietnam, about 4500 km southwest of Japan, during the period from March 27 to April 22, 2011. The maximum activity concentrations in the air measured at those three sites were 193, 33, and 37 µBq m(-3) for (131)I, (13)(4)Cs, and (13)(7)Cs, respectively. Peaks of radionuclide concentrations in the air corresponded to arrival of the air mass from Fukushima to Vietnam after traveling for 8 d over the Pacific Ocean. Cesium-134 was detected with the (134)Cs/(137)Cs activity ratio of about 0.85 in line with observations made elsewhere. The (131)I/(137)Cs activity ratio was observed to decrease exponentially with time as expected from radioactive decay. The ratio at Dalat, where is 1500 m high, was higher than those at Hanoi and HCMC in low lands, indicating the relative enrichment of the iodine in comparison to cesium at high altitudes. The time-integrated surface air concentrations of the Fukushima-derived radionuclides in the Southeast Asia showed exponential decrease with distance from Fukushima.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to clarify the effects of liquid preservation conditions on the ability of pig sperm to activate oocytes, form a male pronucleus, and initiate preimplantational development of embryos after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Porcine ejaculates were preserved at 4, 14, and 24 degrees C for up to 48h, and then damage to the plasma membrane, morphologic changes of the acrosome, and the amount of phospholipase Czeta (PLCzeta) in the sperm were assessed by SYBR-14/propidium iodide staining, fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated peanut agglutinin staining, indirect immunofluorescence, and Western blots, respectively. The proportion of sperm with a disintegrated plasma membrane or damaged acrosome increased in all samples as the duration of preservation increased, although the time courses of the increases varied among preservation temperatures. The immunolocalization and immunoreactivity of PLCzeta in the sperm showed its reduction concurrent with disintegration of the plasma membrane and acrosome. Rates of oocyte activation, male-pronuclear formation, and blastocyst formation after ICSI using sperm preserved for 18h at 24 degrees C (78%, 62%, and 35%, respectively) and for 48h at 14 degrees C (63%, 53%, and 28%, respectively) were significantly higher than those of any other sperm sample. We concluded that the damage to the plasma membrane and acrosome, and a sufficient amount of PLCzeta in the sperm head, enhanced successful oocyte activation, fertilization, and early development of the oocytes after ICSI. Moreover, we inferred that appropriate liquid preservation of sperm improved the efficiency of blastocyst production in vitro after ICSI in pigs.

ABSTRACT

Imperfect understanding of the pathophysiology of tetanus has limited therapeutic advances. Autonomic disturbance is a major cause of mortality and is believed to be associated with catecholamine release, predominantly norepinephrine. We measured epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations in 24-h urine collections from tetanus and critically ill patients suffering from other severe diseases. In patients with severe tetanus, mean (SD) epinephrine was 164.18 (129.37) nmol x day(-1) compared with 45.18 (37.74) nmol x day(-1) in mild-moderate disease (p = 0.008). In the severe group, mean (SD) norepinephrine was 411.64 (208.5), and 121.00 (81.81) nmol x day(-1) in moderately ill patients (p < 0.001). Compared with critically ill control patients, median epinephrine was 331.77 in tetanus patients and 89.70 nmol x day(-1) in controls (p < 0.001). Median norepinephrine concentration was 788.02 nmol x day(-1) in tetanus and 300.05 nmol x day(-1) in control patients, p = 0.006. The study finds a novel result of increased epinephrine excretion in tetanus and confirms that catecholamine excretion in tetanus exceeds that in other critically ill patients. These results should be considered in designing more effective therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT

The 137Cs inventories in undisturbed soils were measured for 292 locations across the territory of Vietnam. The logarithmic inventory values were regressed against characteristics of sampling sites, such as geographical coordinates, annual rainfall and physico-chemical parameters of soil. The regression model containing latitude and annual rainfall as determinants could explain 76% of the variations in logarithmic inventory values across the territory. The model part was interpreted as the logarithmic 137Cs deposition density. At the 95% confidence level, 137Cs deposition density could be predicted by the model within +/- 7% relative uncertainty. The latitude mean 137Cs deposition density increases northward from 237 Bq m(-2) to 1097 Bq m(-2), while the corresponding values derived from the UNSCEAR (1969) global pattern are 300 Bq m(-2) and 600 Bq m(-2). High 137Cs inputs were found in high-rainfall areas in northern and central parts of the territory.

ABSTRACT

A database on 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs in surface soils was established to provide inputs for the assessment of the collective dose to the population of Vietnam and to support soil erosion studies using 137Cs as a tracer. A total of 292 soil samples was taken from undisturbed sites across the territory and the concentrations of radionuclides were determined by gamma spectrometry method. The multiple regression of 137Cs inventories against characteristics of sampling locations allowed us to establish the distribution of 137Cs deposition density and its relationship with latitude and annual rainfall. The 137Cs deposition density increases northward and varies from 178 Bq m(-2) to 1,920 Bq m(-2). High rainfall areas in the northern and central parts of the country have received considerable 137Cs inputs exceeding 600 Bq m-2, which is the maximum value that can be expected for Vietnam from the UNSCEAR global pattern. The mean activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides 238U, 232Th, and 40K are 45, 59, and 401 Bq kg(-1), respectively, which entail an average absorbed dose rate in air of 62 nGy h(-1), which is about 7% higher than the world average.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the knowledge and practice among private pharmacy staff in Hanoi regarding case management of mild acute respiratory infection (ARI) in children. METHODS: Sixty private pharmacies in Hanoi were randomly selected. Knowledge was assessed through interviews with pharmacy staff using a questionnaire; practice was assessed through the Simulated Client Method. RESULTS: In the questionnaire, 20% of the pharmacy staff stated that they would dispense antibiotics. In practice, 83% of the pharmacies dispensed antibiotics. Only 36% of the cases were handled according to guidelines. In the questionnaire, 81% of interviewees stated that antibiotics are not effective in short therapeutic courses. In practice, 48% of the antibiotics were dispensed in courses less than five days. Traditional herbal medicines were dispensed in 41% of the encounters. In the questionnaire, 53% of the pharmacy staff stated that they would ask the patient about difficulty of breathing. In practice, questions related to difficulty of breathing were asked in less than 10% of the encounters. CONCLUSIONS: Dispensing of antibiotics for mild ARI was common practice among private pharmacies, and there was a significant difference between knowledge and practice. Interventions are needed to improve pharmacy practice in Hanoi.
