ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Chia seeds are touted as a healthy food capable of providing a beneficial effect on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Similar claims have been made for oats in various forms, claiming that they improve cholesterol or are in some way "heart healthy." OBJECTIVE:  This study aims to demonstrate the effect of daily consumption of chia seeds, if any, on HDL cholesterol levels and compare this to the effects of oats on HDL levels. METHODS:  This pilot study is a randomized controlled trial performed at an academic primary care center. Participation was voluntary, and all participants provided written consent prior to enrollment. There were no exclusion criteria other than that participants must be adults and willing to come in to get their cholesterol profiles checked at the beginning and end of the study. The participants consumed their assigned breakfast in a standard serving size for a month with blood draws and weights recorded before and after the diet. The patients' cholesterol profiles were also compared with their weights. To standardize the delivery of chia seeds, the group consuming chia seeds mixed them with oatmeal. The three meal groups consisted of Cheerios (red group), oatmeal (white group), and oatmeal with chia seeds (blue group). Initially, there were a total of 11 subjects, three in the red group, four in the white group, and four in the blue group. Two subjects were lost to follow-up, one each from the red and white groups. Statistical analysis including one-way analysis was done with the means, Wilcoxon/Kruskal-Wallis, and one-way analysis tests. RESULTS:  The results showed a similar weight gain pattern between the three groups, with an average of 2.8 lbs gained in the red group, 2.4 lbs gained in the white group, and 2.6 lbs gained in the blue group. The average HDL levels decreased by 1.00 mg/dL in the red group (standard deviation (SD) 2.82843), increased by 2.00 mg/dL in the white group (SD 8.88819), and increased by 5.75 mg/dL in the blue group (SD 8.01561). The HDL:total cholesterol ratios decreased by 0.00748 in the red group (SD 0.002660), an average of 0.04053 in the white group (SD 0.028138), and an average of 0.01614 in the blue group (SD 0.023808). CONCLUSION:  The results suggest that both chia seeds and oatmeal may be good dietary sources to naturally increase HDL cholesterol, more substantially so with the diet including chia seeds, but may or may not improve total cholesterol:HDL ratios. The effect of weight gain is unclear, as all groups gained weight similarly. Hence, further study is warranted.

ABSTRACT

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), is a common pest found in apartment buildings. Prevalence of cockroach infestations is affected by both environmental conditions and building occupant behavior, but their relationships are not well studied. The objective of this study was to analyze the presence of German cockroaches in relation to environmental conditions, resident demographics, and residents' tolerance of cockroaches. We conducted resident interviews, placed sticky traps to detect the presence of German cockroaches, and assessed apartment conditions. A total of 388 apartments from seven low-income apartment buildings, occupied by senior citizens in New Jersey, United States, were included. Among the 344 apartments where trap count data were obtained, 30% had German cockroaches. Among interviewed residents whose apartments had existing cockroach infestations, 36% were unaware of the presence of cockroaches. The odds of having cockroaches in apartments with a 'poor' sanitation rating in kitchens and bathrooms was 2.7 times greater than that in apartments with better sanitation conditions. Residents' tolerance to cockroaches is significantly associated with presence of cockroaches and cockroach population size. The median cockroach count when residents were bothered by cockroaches was ≥3, based on deployment of 4 sticky traps per apartment, over a 2-wk period. Assessing and reducing cockroach tolerance thresholds and improving housekeeping through resident education and assistance from community and housing management should be incorporated in future cockroach management programs in order to reduce high cockroach infestation rates found in similar communities.

ABSTRACT

Health information technology (HIT) has great potential for increasing patient engagement. Pediatric hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a setting ripe for using HIT but in which little research exists. "BMT Roadmap" is a web-based application that integrates patient-specific information and includes several domains: laboratory results, medications, clinical trial details, photos of the healthcare team, trajectory of transplant process, and discharge checklist. BMT Roadmap was provided to 10 caregivers of patients undergoing first-time HCT. Research assistants performed weekly qualitative interviews throughout the patient's hospitalization and at discharge and day 100 to assess the impact of BMT Roadmap. Rigorous thematic analysis revealed 5 recurrent themes: emotional impact of the HCT process itself; critical importance of communication among patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers; ways in which BMT Roadmap was helpful during inpatient setting; suggestions for improving BMT Roadmap; and other strategies for organization and management of complex healthcare needs that could be incorporated into BMT Roadmap. Caregivers found the tool useful and easy to use, leading them to want even greater access to information. BMT Roadmap was feasible, with no disruption to inpatient care. Although this initial study is limited by the small sample size and single-institution experience, these initial findings are encouraging and support further investigation.

ABSTRACT

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) senses and incorporates different environmental cues via the two signaling complexes mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) and mTORC2. As a result, mTOR controls cell growth and survival, and also shapes different effector functions of the cells including immune cells such as T cells. We demonstrate in this article that invariant NKT (iNKT) cell development is controlled by mTORC2 in a cell-intrinsic manner. In mice deficient in mTORC2 signaling because of the conditional deletion of the Rictor gene, iNKT cell numbers were reduced in the thymus and periphery. This is caused by decreased proliferation of stage 1 iNKT cells and poor development through subsequent stages. Functionally, iNKT cells devoid of mTORC2 signaling showed reduced number of IL-4-expressing cells, which correlated with a decrease in the transcription factor GATA-3-expressing cells. However, promyelocytic leukemia zinc-finger (PLZF), a critical transcription factor for iNKT cell development, is expressed at a similar level in mTORC2-deficient iNKT cells compared with that in the wild type iNKT cells. Furthermore, cellular localization of PLZF was not altered in the absence of mTOR2 signaling. Thus, our study reveals the PLZF-independent mechanisms of the development and function of iNKT cells regulated by mTORC2.
