ABSTRACT

The symbiotic relationship between nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and plants offers a promising avenue for sustainable agricultural practices and environmental remediation. This review paper explores the molecular interactions between nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and nanoparticles, shedding light on their potential synergies in agricultural nanotechnology. Delving into the evolutionary history and specialized adaptations of cyanobacteria, this paper highlights their pivotal role in fixing atmospheric nitrogen, which is crucial for ecosystem productivity. The review discusses the unique characteristics of metal nanoparticles and their emerging applications in agriculture, including improved nutrient delivery, stress tolerance, and disease resistance. It delves into the complex mechanisms of nanoparticle entry into plant cells, intracellular transport, and localization, uncovering the impact on root-shoot translocation and systemic distribution. Furthermore, the paper elucidates cellular responses to nanoparticle exposure, emphasizing oxidative stress, signaling pathways, and enhanced nutrient uptake. The potential of metal nanoparticles as carriers of essential nutrients and their implications for nutrient-use efficiency and crop yield are also explored. ABSTRACT

E. coli is the number one cause for water quality impairments in rivers and streams in South Dakota and the United States. Stream bottom sediments can be a reservoir for bacteria, including pathogenic organisms and fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), due to the favorable conditions provided by sediments for survival. Despite this, little is known about the variability of E. coli in sediments which should be considered when developing a sampling regime. This study examines the spatial variability of E. coli in sediment across the stream cross-section, the temporal stability of E. coli in sediment samples, and the implications for sediment sampling and processing. Five locations were sampled for sediment E. coli along two tributaries to the Big Sioux River in eastern South Dakota, four along Skunk Creek (Sk1, Sk2, Sk3, and Sk4), and one in Sixmile Creek (SM). In Skunk Creek, site Sk1 has direct cattle access where the other three sites (Sk2, Sk3, and Sk4) are under Seasonal Riparian Area Management (SRAM), a strategy that limits the cattle access to the stream. E. coli concentrations in the sediment ranged from 4 to 997 CFU g-1 (8.5 × 102 to 2.1 × 105 CFU 100 mL-1). The highest and lowest E. coli concentrations observed were at sites Sk1 and Sk4, respectively. The E. coli concentration decreased from the upstream cattle crossing site (Sk1) through the downstream SRAM sites. Analyzing the stream cross-section analysis revealed no significant difference in E. coli concentration between the edge and the middle of the stream. Sediment samples can be held up to 24 h after sample collection in refrigerated conditions (37 °F) in the majority of cases (80%) without significant changes in E. coli concentrations. The sample size analysis indicated the spatial variability of E. coli across the stream cross-section is high and a single grab sample may not be able to provide adequate representation of E. coli concentrations in sediment without substantial error. The findings provide insight for designing E. coli monitoring projects and promote the awareness of unconventional sources of microbiological water quality impairment which are often overlooked.

ABSTRACT

Knowledge of how biochar impacts soil denitrification kinetics as well as the mechanisms of interactions is essential in order to better predict the nitrous oxide (N2O) mitigation capacity of biochar additions. This study had multiple experiments in which the effect of three biochar materials produced from corn stover (Zea mays L.), ponderosa pine wood residue (Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex Lawson and C. Lawson), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), and their corresponding biomass materials (corn stover, ponderosa pine wood residue, and switchgrass) on cumulative N2O emissions and total denitrification in soils from two different landscape positions (crest and footslope) were studied under varying water-filled pore space (40, 70, and 90% WFPS). Cumulative N2O emissions were reduced by 30 to 70% in both crest and footslope soils. The effect of biochars and biomass treatments on cumulative N2O emissions and total denitrification were only observed at ≥40% WFPS. The denitrification enzyme activity (DEA) kinetic parameters, K s (half-saturation constant), and V max (maximum DEA rate) were both significantly reduced by biochar treatments, with reductions of 70-80% in footslope soil and 80-90 % in the crest soil. The activation energy (E a) and enthalpy of activation of DEA (ΔH) were both increased with biochar application. The trends in DEA rate constants (K s and V max) were correlated by the trends of thermodynamic parameters (activation energy E a and enthalpy of activation ΔH) for denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA). The rate constant V max/K s evaluated the capacity of biochars to mitigate the denitrification process. Denitrifying enzyme kinetic parameters can be useful in evaluating the ability of biochars to mitigate N2O gas losses from soil.

The tentative connection between the biochar surface chemical properties and their influence on microbially mediated mineralization of C, N, and S with the help of enzymes is not well established. This study was designed to investigate the effect of different biomass conversion processes (microwave pyrolysis, carbon optimized gasification, and fast pyrolysis using electricity) on the composition and surface chemistry of biochar materials produced from corn stover (Zea mays L.), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), and Ponderosa pine wood residue (Pinus ponderosa Lawson and C. Lawson) and determine the effect of biochars on mineralization of C, N, and S and associated soil enzymatic activities including esterase (fluorescein diacetate hydrolase, FDA), dehydrogenase (DHA), ß-glucosidase (GLU), protease (PROT), and aryl sulfatase (ARSUL) in two different soils collected from footslope (Brookings) and crest (Maddock) positions of a landscape. Chemical properties of biochar materials produced from different batches of gasification process were fairly consistent. Biochar materials were found to be highly hydrophobic (low H/C values) with high aromaticity, irrespective of biomass feedstock and pyrolytic process. The short term incubation study showed that biochar had negative effects on microbial activity (FDA and DHA) and some enzymes including ß-glucosidase and protease.

ABSTRACT

Dragon's blood is one of the renowned traditional medicines used in different cultures of world. It has got several therapeutic uses: haemostatic, antidiarrhetic, antiulcer, antimicrobial, antiviral, wound healing, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, etc. Besides these medicinal applications, it is used as a coloring material, varnish and also has got applications in folk magic. These red saps and resins are derived from a number of disparate taxa. Despite its wide uses, little research has been done to know about its true source, quality control and clinical applications. In this review, we have tried to overview different sources of Dragon's blood, its source wise chemical constituents and therapeutic uses. As well as, a little attempt has been done to review the techniques used for its quality control and safety.
