ABSTRACT

La aplasia cutis congénita (ACC) es un trastorno poco frecuente del desarrollo cutáneo, presentándose la mayoría como defectos aislados, pero pueden asociarse a otras malformaciones y síndromes genéticos. En relación a un caso de ACC extensa asociada a Síndrome de Adams-Oliver (SAO) se analizaron 10 casos de ACC con ubicación especial o asociadas a otras malformaciones diagnosticadas en forma clínica o por ecografía. Se confeccionó una tabla clasificando cada caso según Frieden, describiendo la ubicación de la aplasia y las asociaciones encontradas.


Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare disorder of skin development, appearing mostly as isolated defects, but may be associated with other malformations and genetic syndromes. In relation to a case of extensive associated ACC Adams-Oliver Syndrome (AOS) were analyzed 10 cases of ACC with special location or associated with other malformations diagnosed clinically or by ultrasound. We made a table classifying each case as Frieden`s classification, describing the location of the aplasia and the associations found.

ABSTRACT

Disc prosthesis is the new treatment for degenerative disc disease in the lumbar spine. Key to assessing the interest in this new motion technique is evaluating the results in terms of functional and radiologic outcomes. This prospective study reports the outcome of 64 Maverick devices implanted between January 2002 and November 2003. The degree of improvement was equivalent to that obtained with anterior fusion cages using the mini-invasive technique. Radiographic follow-up in this series showed a degree of mobility close to normal. The technique is safe because the intra- and postoperative complication rate is low. The Oswestry score improved for 75% of patients. This improvement is significantly correlated with facet arthrosis and muscle fatty degeneration.

ABSTRACT

The dynamic CO exchange of the monovalent metal carbonyl cations [Ag(13CO)]+, [Au(13CO)2]+-Au(13CO) SO3F and [Rh(12CO)4-x(13CO)x]+ (x < or = 1) in superacidic solutions was studied by variable-temperature 13C NMR methods. The exchange rates are strongly dependent on the acidity of the solvent, the concentration of metal carbonyl cations and temperature. Whereas a suitable exchange rate of the Ag(I) system is only accessible in magic acid (HSO3F-SbF5), the more stable Au(I) and Rh(I) systems were studied in the less acidic fluorosulfuric acid. Selected solutions of Ag(I), Rh(I) and Au(I) yielded activation barriers deltaG* of 42.7, 43.5, and 56.2 kJ mol(-1) respectively.

ABSTRACT

We report a 30-year-old-patient with penile sclerosing lipogranuloma following injections of Vaseline. He was successfully treated by complete surgical removal of the subcutaneous material and excision of atrophic skin, followed by penoplasty. Temporary impairment of wound healing was overcome by application of topical carbon dioxide gas. A brief review on international literature is given.

ABSTRACT

The effective long-term use of indwelling ureteral stents is often hindered by the formation of encrusting deposits which may cause obstruction and blockage of the stent. Development of improved ureteral stent biomaterials capable of preventing or reducing encrustation is therefore particularly desirable. In this study, the suitability as a ureteral stent biomaterial of Aquavene, a novel poly(ethylene oxide)/polyurethane composite hydrogel was compared with that of silicone and polyurethane, two materials widely employed in ureteral stent manufacture. Examination of Aquavene in dry and hydrated states by confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy showed the presence of numerous channels within a cellular matrix structure. The channel size increased considerably to as much as 10 microm in diameter in the hydrated state. Aquavene provided superior resistance to encrustation and intraluminal blockage over a 24-week period in a simulated urine flow model. Unobstructed urine flow continued with Aquavene at 24 weeks, whereas silicone and polyurethane stents became blocked with encrustation at 8 and 10 weeks, respectively. Weight loss within Aquavene on the order of 9% (w/w) over the 24-week flow period indicates that extraction of the noncrosslinked poly(ethylene oxide) hydrogel may be responsible for the prevention of encrustation blockage of this biomaterial. In the dry state, Aquavene was significantly harder than either silicone or polyurethane, as shown by Young's modulus, and rapidly became soft on hydration. These additional properties of Aquavene would facilitate ease of stent insertion in the dry state past obstructions in the ureter and provide improved patient comfort on subsequent biomaterial hydration in situ. Aquavene is a promising candidate for use in the urinary tract, as it is probable that effective long-term urine drainage would be maintained in vivo. Further evaluation of this novel biomaterial is therefore warranted.
