ABSTRACT

The syndrome has been described at first in 1952 by Goldenhar. Today, after the completion by Gorlin in 1963, the Goldenhar anomaly and the hemifacial microsomia are considered variants of a single dysmorphogenetic entity. The main characteristics of the syndrome are: 1. Epibulbar dermoids, 2. auricular appendages or fistulae, 3. vertebral anomalies. More recently, other malformations have been documented in association with the Goldenhar complex including CNS, cardiac, pulmonary and renal anomalies. We present the surgical correction of a patient with Goldenhar syndrome, with a combination of maxillofacial and plastic procedures. A review of the literature concerning the pathogenetic mechanisms and the surgical intervention is also presented.

ABSTRACT

A case is reported of a 57 year-old woman who suffered a dislocation of the mandibular condyles for 18 months. A new technique is described for the reduction of the mandible. Two screws are fixed in the angles of the jaw and wires are passed extraoraly after connecting them with the screws. Forces can be exercised through these wires.

ABSTRACT

Macroglossia means long or large tongue. Since it is difficult to establish clinical criteria for assessment of the size of the tongue, usually it is related to the size of the mandible. We present the indications for the surgical management of macroglossia in children and we discuss the results after the Becker operation. We also present the results in relation to the preservation of taste, the mobility of the tongue, the restoration of normal speech, disturbances of sensitivity, as well as the timing for the operation.

ABSTRACT

The three-dimensional computerized tomography (3D-CT) gives the possibility of recomposing the 3D features, using the data pictures of successive slices of ordinary computerized tomography. In this paper we present the 3D-CT technique, as well as representative cases of patients with fractures and residual deformities in the craniomaxillofacial area. We also discuss the way the 3D-CT helped in the therapeutic evaluation. Moreover the pictures taken with this technique are compared with other diagnostic methods used in this area. In conclusion the present paper shows the significance of the 3D-CT both in the accurate diagnosis and in the pre-operative evaluation of severe maxillofacial problems.

ABSTRACT

The calcium phosphate system, and in particular Hydroxylapatite, has been the subject of intensive investigation. Recently dense, non-resorbable particulate and block forms of hydroxylapatite have been developed for use as tooth root, bone augmentation and bone replacement material. Dense and porous hydroxylapatite forms have been used clinically for periodontal defects, alveolar ridge maintenance and alveolar ridge deficiencies. In this study the different clinical uses of hydroxylapatite in the Maxillofacial area are presented.

ABSTRACT

We present a case that have been involved in a severe traffic accident, with the following residual deformities in the Craniomaxillofacial region: Absence of the major part of the frontal bone which had been fractured and its small remained (infected) fragments removed by the neurosurgeons and an open bite, as a result of mal-united jaw fractures, due to inadequate primary treatment because confrontation of more serious and life threatening injuries imposed precedence. The open bite was corrected by bimaxillary orthognathic surgery (Le Fort I and sagittal splitting) and the residual absence of the frontal bone was reconstructed by onlay split rib-grafts. We present the accomplished results.

ABSTRACT

The Intramobile Cylinder (IMZ) two-stage osseointegrated implant system is unique. The IMZ implant system incorporates a Derlin, intramobile element (IME) which simulates the periodontal ligament of the natural tooth unit. This shock-absorbing element distributes stress and functional load in a physiological manner so that the semi-edentoulous patient may be reconstructed by splinting to the adjacent natural teeth. This article discusses the IMZ implant system, its surgical insertion and its clinical use.

ABSTRACT

This syndrome is made up of a constellation of congenitally malformed facial structures which arises from the first and second branchial arches. A case of hemifacial microsomia, with the physical characteristics of unilateral left underdevelopment of the external and middle ear, mandible and zygoma is presented. The treatment took place in two stages: Firstly the auricle was reconstructed with the method of tissue expander and silicone frame and secondly the mandibular prognathism and laterognathism with sagittal splitting was corrected. We present our case and the results that have been gained by combining the modalities of plastic and orthognathic surgery.

ABSTRACT

In this study calculi from human submandibular salivary glands were examined with the method of fluorescence and diffraction of X-rays, as well as the radiocrystallographique method. Beside the already known substances, a significant amount of iodine was found. It is the first time that iodine is found as component of calculi of the human salivary glands. The patients history (thyroid glands etc) didn't give an explanation for the presence of iodine.

ABSTRACT

Hydroxylapatite implants are becoming widely used, but this new material is not without its drawbacks. These mainly concern its physical characteristics, complicating and limiting its clinical applications. A method of altering these with fibrin adhesives is described and early laboratory and clinical experience is presented.
