ABSTRACT

The dynamics of a quantum phase transition are explored using slow quenches from the polar to the broken-axisymmetry phases in a small spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate. Measurements of the evolution of the spin populations reveal a power-law scaling of the temporal onset of excitations versus quench speed as predicted from quantum extensions of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. The satisfactory agreement of the measured scaling exponent with the analytical theory and numerical simulations provides experimental confirmation of the quantum Kibble-Zurek model.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The evaluation of postoperative results of the non-penetrating deep sclerectomy in primary open angle glaucoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From September 1999 to October 2000 the procedure was performed in 10 patients (15 eyes). There were 7 men and 3 women aged from 45 to 87 years. Preoperative IOPs ranged from 16 to 38 mm Hg. The follow up time ranged from 3 to 12 months. RESULTS: Success was considered an IOP of less than 20 mm Hg without medication in 87%. There were a few early postoperative complications included hypotony (9 patients), hyphema (1 patient), chorioidal detachment (3 patients). Late complication was bleb fibrosis in only 1 patient. Visual acuity and visual field were not worse than before surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Our experience confirms that the non penetrating deep sclerectomy appears to be a safe and effective procedure in open angle glaucoma.

ABSTRACT

Amines and amino acids are able to form cyclic compounds with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP). The quantitative relationship between histamine and PLP in the cyclization reaction were examined. It was found that one mole of amine reacts with one mole of coenzyme. The velocity of complex formation increased with an excess of either histamine or PLP, without any change in molar ratios. The formation of cyclic compound was confirmed by the use of isotopic method. The separation of cyclic compound from histamine, but not from PLP, was achieved by paper chromatography.

ABSTRACT

Histamine in high concentration inhibits the rat intestinal histaminase (diamine oxidase E.C. 1.4.3.6.). The apparent Km is approximately 4.2 X 10(-5) M. This inhibition can be reversed by an addition of PLP. It was also found that excess of PLP inhibits enzyme activity. It is competitive inhibition. Histamine and other amines which were associated with enzyme inhibition form spectrophotometricaly demonstrable complex with PLP. The possible mechanism of the inhibitory action of PLP and complex with histamine and other amines on rat intestinal histaminase activity are discussed.
