ABSTRACT

Two new species of Glaphyridae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) are described from south western Turkey. Eulasia (Eulasia) ozdikmeni Uliana, Bollino & Sabatinelli, new species is distributed from the Isparta vilayet in the west, to the Mersin vilayet in the east, and was previously confused with Eulasia (Eulasia) montana (Reitter, 1890), a poorly known species from Diyarbakir area for which a lectotype is designated. Pygopleurus ozguri Uliana, Bollino & Sabatinelli, new species is an early-flying species only known from the surroundings of Karaman city (Karaman vilayet), and is peculiar for the shape of the male clypeus and paramera.

The male genitalia of each new species including the endophallus is illustrated, as well as that of Apocyrtus auroraensis Rukmane-Bârbale, 2021, and Apocyrtus inflatus Erichson, 1834. In addition, Apocyrtus marinduquensis Rukmane-Bârbale, 2022 is considered a new junior subjective synonym of Apocyrtus auroraensis, of which the type locality is noted as in error.

ABSTRACT

Two new species of the genus Metapocyrtus subgenus Trachycyrtus, Metapocyrtus baltazarae sp. nov. Cabras & Bollino (Luzon) and M. siargaonon sp. nov. Bollino & Cabras (Mindanao) from the Philippines are described, illustrated and compared with related species. The new species epithets are derived in honor of Dr. Clare Baltazar as Metapocyrtus (Trachycyrtus) baltazarae sp.nov., and Metapocyrtus (Trachycyrtus) siargaonon sp.nov. after the indigenous inhabitants of Siargao Island.

ABSTRACT

Three new species of Pachyrhynchus Germar, 1824 are described from Mindanao Island, The Philippines: P. similis sp. nov., P. subanon sp. nov., and P. chrysomaculatus sp. nov. For each new taxon habitus photographs of male and female, and illustrations of male genitalia are provided. The author also proposes to consider the above species together with the closest ones as belonging to the new atrocyaneus species group.

ABSTRACT

Catasticta lycurgus is a striking endemic butterfly, restricted to high elevation habitats in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, an isolated mountain range separate from the Andes in the north of Colombia. The type, which for almost a hundred years was the only known specimen, was collected in 1878 by Frederick Simons in the vicinity of Atánquez and was sent to the UK to be described by renowned naturalists Godman and Salvin in 1880. In 1972, explorers Adams and Bernard collected a second specimen of C. lycurgus in the locality of San Pedro at 2,900m of elevation in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. These two specimens were the only known ones for many decades until recently, when Colombian entomologists found the species again in San Pedro de la Sierra and later, when a female was discovered in 2013. Here, we report the rediscovery of this rare and charismatic species, with new specimens collected near the type locality, which have not been reported previously. The female of C. lycurgus is described and illustrated for the first time as well the male genitalia of this species. We combine all information available to provide some insights on the systematic relationships of this species within the genus Catasticta Butler, discuss its distribution and provide a preliminary conservation assessment. Despite the newly collected specimens, the species remains very rare in the field and in collections.

ABSTRACT

Two new species of Metapocyrtus Heller, 1912, subgenus Orthocyrtus Heller, 1912 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae, Pachyrhynchini) are described and illustrated from Mindanao Island, Philippines. The species are Metapocyrtus (Orthocyrtus) davaoensissp. nov. and Metapocyrtus (Orthocyrtus) hirakuisp. nov. from Davao City and Bukidnon, respectively. Brief bionomical notes and phenotypic characters compared to their sympatric Entiminae counterparts are also reported. The discovery of M. (O.) davaoensissp. nov. in Davao City confirms how understudied Coleoptera are in Mindanao and underlines the potential for the discovery of new species even in highly urbanized areas.

ABSTRACT

The present contribution revises the taxonomy of the Pygopleurus Motschulsky, 1860 species from the mainland Greece, introducing substantial changes to the last taxonomic work by Baraud (1989). Pygopleurus humeralis (Brullé, 1832) is recognized as a junior synonym of P. apicalis (Brullé, 1832). Specimens up to date identified as P. humeralis actually belong to five different taxa, of which two are new: P. brullei brullei Bollino, Uliana Sabatinelli, new species and P. brullei taygetanus Bollino, Uliana Sabatinelli, new subspecies, two are resurrected from synonymy: P. viridisuturatus (Reitter, 1903) from Greece, and P. isikdagensis (Petrovitz, 1963) from Turkey, and one species, P. bulgaricus (Nedelkov, 1905) is resurrected. Pygopleurus pseudopsilotrichius (Petrovitz, 1958) is resurrected from unwarranted synonymy with P. anemoninus (Brullé, 1832). Pygopleurus chrysonotus (Brullé, 1832) is removed from the synonymy with P. anemoninus and treated as senior synonym of Pygopleurus diffusus (Petrovitz, 1958). Pygopleurus anemoninus, P. chrysonotus and P. hirsutus (Brullé, 1832) are endemic to Greece, and absent from the fauna of Turkey. Previous records of these species from Turkey result from misidentifications. Neotypes of Pygopleurus chrysonotus and P. bulgaricus are designated. Neotype of Amphicoma apicalis designated by Baraud (1989) and lectotype of A. humeralis selected by Baraud (1989) in 1988 are considered invalid and set aside. For all species, ecological notes are presented and geographical distributions are mapped.

ABSTRACT

Pachyrhynchus phaleratus Waterhouse, 1841, an entimine weevil belonging to the tribe Pachyrhynchini Schoenherr, 1826, was originally described from "the Philippine Islands", based on material collected by Hugh Cuming (Waterhouse 1841). The precise type locality of this species is unknown, but Schultze (1923) recorded it from Catanduanes Island in the Bicol region of Luzon, Philippines.
