ABSTRACT

Although musculoskeletal disorders are the most frequent cause of occupational diseases in musicians, very few studies have focused attention on a single category of instruments, in particular on the violin. This involves, in its practice, almost all the areas of the body, besides being in the category of strings which is the most numerous in an orchestra. A specific protocol, investigating postural and clinical profiles of the musculoskeletal apparatus as well as job stress, was utilized in a conservatory on graduates in the tenth year of violin study, who regularly participated in activities of orchestras or string quartets. The investigation revealed target segments of osteoarticular apparatus (jaw, vertebral spine, shoulders, elbows, hands and fingers, lower limbs) electively subjected to overuse, as well as muscle contracture of trapezoids and hyperkeratosis of fingers and clavicle. Although the work environment was comfortable, most violinists claimed to undergo intense rhythms and competitiveness. This study, highlighting subclinical occupational diseases in young musicians (violinists) suggests adequate prevention measures.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the work is to proceed to the recognition of asbestos phenomenon in Campania and in the other regions with emphasis on the incidence and development of several related diseases. Using data from first INAIL Annual Report on the progress of occupational diseases until 1999, and the data provided by the INAIL CSA regarding the last 12 years (2000 to 2011), the incidence is illustrated for two-year periods, from 2000 to 2011, for the total of diseases and separately for: asbestosis, mesotheliomas, lung cancer and non-cancerous pleural lesions. The total of diseases by region for the period 2000-2011 has been reported. The survey results show a gradual increase in the total asbestos related diseases (15,998) due to the mesotheliomas portion (5739) while the trend of lung cancer is stationary (2,287). Pleural plaques have a variable growth in the various regions during recent years. Some significant case studies from Campania are reported.

ABSTRACT

In 1898 the compulsory work accident insurance was introduced in the Italian legislation: both public and private organizations could provide insurance to the workers. In 1933 the Cassa Nazionale Infortuni (founded in 1884) was unified to other small public funds in a single body, the Italian Workers' Compensation Authority (INAIL). During the post-war recovery INAIL founded hospitals and wards fully dedicated to work traumas (Orthopaedic Traumatic Centres or Burns Centres) and opened rehabilitation and prosthetic centres for injured workers. In this view, INAIL and Italian National Olympic Committee supported the first official Paralympic Games, held in Rome in 1960. Nowadays many hospitals originally owned by INAIL belong to the Italian National Health System and provide healthcare also to general population. However INAIL continues its mission in workers' protection and confirms its main role in the field of accident prevention and rehabilitation of injured workers, also thanks to recent legislative modifications.
