ABSTRACT

Virtually all climate monitoring and forecasting efforts concentrate on hazards rather than on impacts, while the latter are a priority for planning emergency activities and for the evaluation of mitigation strategies. Effective disaster risk management strategies need to consider the prevailing "human terrain" to predict who is at risk and how communities will be affected. There has been little effort to align the spatiotemporal granularity of socioeconomic assessments with the granularity of weather or climate monitoring. The lack of a high-resolution socioeconomic baseline leaves methodical approaches like machine learning virtually untapped for pattern recognition of extreme climate impacts on livelihood conditions. While the request for "better" socioeconomic data is not new, we highlight the need to collect and analyze environmental and socioeconomic data together and discuss novel strategies for coordinated data collection via mobile technologies from a drought risk management perspective. A better temporal, spatial, and contextual understanding of socioeconomic impacts of extreme climate conditions will help to establish complex causal pathways and quantitative proof about climate-attributable livelihood impacts. Such considerations are particularly important in the context of the latest big data-driven initiatives, such as the World Bank's Famine Action Mechanism (FAM).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nerve injury often results in persistent or chronic neuropathic pain characterized by spontaneous burning pain accompanied by allodynia and hyperalgesia. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a noninvasive method that has proved to be clinically effective in reducing pain sensitivity and consequently in improving the quality of life. Here we examined the effects of LLLT on pain sensitivity induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) in rats. CCI was performed on adult male rats, subjected thereafter to 10 sessions of LLLT, every other day, and starting 14 days after CCI. Over the treatment period, the animals were evaluated for nociception using behavioral tests, such as allodynia, thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia. Following the sessions, we observed the involvement of satellite glial cells in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) using immunoblotting and immunofluorescence approaches. In addition we analyzed the expression levels of interleukin 1 (IL-1ß) and fractalkine (FKN) after the same stimulus. RESULTS: LLLT induced an early reduction (starting at the second session; p ≤ 0.001) of the mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia and allodynia in CCI rats, which persisted until the last session. Regarding cellular changes, we observed a decrease of GFAP (50%; p ≤ 0.001) expression after LLLT in the ipsilateral DRG when compared with the naive group. We also observed a significant increase of pro-inflammatory cytokines after CCI, whereas LLLT dramatically inhibited the overexpression of these proteins. CONCLUSIONS: These data provide evidence that LLLT reverses CCI-induced behavioral hypersensitivity, reduces glial cell activation in the DRG and decreases pro-inflammatory cytokines; we suggest that this involvement of glial cells can be one potential mechanism in such an effect.

ABSTRACT

Theoretical analysis of the optomechanics of degenerate bosonic atoms with a single feedback mirror shows that self-structuring occurs only above an input threshold that is quantum mechanical in origin. This threshold also implies a lower limit to the size (period) of patterns that can be produced in a condensate for a given pump intensity. These thresholds are interpreted as due to the quantum rigidity of Bose-Einstein condensates, which has no classical counterpart. Above the threshold, the condensate self-organizes into an ordered supersolid state with a spatial period self-selected by optical diffraction.

ABSTRACT

A free-electron laser (FEL) operating in the quantum regime can provide a compact and monochromatic x-ray source. Here we present the complete quantum model for a FEL with a laser wiggler in three spatial dimensions, based on a discrete Wigner-function formalism taking into account the longitudinal momentum quantization. The model describes the complete spatial and temporal evolution of the electron and radiation beams, including diffraction, propagation, laser wiggler profile and emittance effects. The transverse motion is described in a suitable classical limit, since the typical beam emittance values are much larger than the Compton wavelength quantum limit. In this approximation we derive an equation for the Wigner function which reduces to the three-dimensional Vlasov equation in the complete classical limit. Preliminary numerical results are presented together with parameters for a possible experiment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Forty-one (20 m, 21 f) non-oncological home parenteral nutrition (HPN) patients (52.0+/-16.6 years, BMI 20.2+/-4.0 kg/m(2)), enrolled from 1995 to 2005, underwent a clinical and biochemical follow-up at 3 months, 1 and 3 years. RESULTS: At admittance the Karnofsky Index ranged between 40 and 50 in 13 (31.7%) and 60 and 80 in 28 (68.3%) patients; the most frequent underlying disease was mesenteric infarction (11 patients, 27%). All had a central venous access. Mean catheterization days were 864+/-992, while mean HPN days were 630+/-668. At the 3-month follow-up, all patients were on HPN, at 1 year 24 (58.5%) and at 3 years 11 (27%). At 3 months, 1 and 3 years there was a significant increase in BMI (p=0.001), body weight (p=0.001) and Karnofsky Index (p=0.001), as well as an improvement of several biochemical parameters. Survival rate of HPN patients was 90.2% at 1 year, 87.8% at 3 years and 82.9% at 5 years. As to HPN-related complications, there was a central venous catheter (CVC) obstruction in 8 patients (19.5%) and 47 CVC infections in 24 (58.5%) patients. The infection rate was 1.32/(00) days of catheterization (1.8/(00) from 1995 to 1998 and 1.0/(00) from 1999 to 2005). Hospitalisation was necessary in over 50% of patients, and death occurred in 8, always as a consequence of the primary disease. CONCLUSIONS: The experience of the nutritional team and careful patient and caregiver training reduce CVC infection rate and the overall risk of complications possibly due to HPN.

ABSTRACT

Networks of globally coupled oscillators exhibit phase transitions from incoherent to coherent states. Atoms interacting with the counterpropagating modes of a unidirectionally pumped high-finesse ring cavity form such a globally coupled network. The coupling mechanism is provided by collective atomic recoil lasing, i.e., cooperative Bragg scattering of laser light at an atomic density grating, which is self-induced by the laser light. Under the rule of an additional friction force, the atomic ensemble is expected to undergo a phase transition to a state of synchronized atomic motion. We present the experimental investigation of this phase transition by studying the threshold behavior of this lasing process.

ABSTRACT

Direct evidence of superradiance from an organic semiconductor (quaterthiophene) whose molecules are arranged in a H aggregate fashion, is reported. Time resolved photoluminescence measurements show a linear correlation between the radiative lifetime (tau(rad)) of the purely electronic exciton recombination and the inverse of the number (N(C)) of the coherently emitting dipoles, i.e., tau(rad) proportional, variant 1/N(C). These data support the recently developed theoretical models describing the optical properties of H aggregates of rodlike molecules with a nonvanishing component of the perpendicular molecular transition dipole moment.

ABSTRACT

We propose a realistic scheme for measuring the micromaser linewidth by monitoring the phase diffusion dynamics of the cavity field. Our strategy consists of exciting an initial coherent state with the same photon number distribution as the micromaser steady-state field, singling out a purely diffusive process in the system dynamics. After the injection of a counterfield, measurements of the population statistics of a probe atom allow us to derive the micromaser linewidth in all ranges of the relevant parameters, establishing experimentally the distinctive features of the micromaser spectrum due to the discreteness of the electromagnetic field.
