ABSTRACT

A case of chronic infection of the nasal mucosae, sinuses and conjunctivae with a microsporidian parasite in association with HIV infection and immune deficiency is reported. This microsporidian resembles both Encephalitozoon cuniculi and the newly described Encephalitozoon hellem by electron microscopy. This occurred in an adult male resident in the UK with no history of foreign travel. Although there are previous descriptions of conjunctival infections from the USA, this is the first description of infection of the nasal epithelium. Further studies are underway to classify this protozoan.

ABSTRACT

We describe a child with typical features of the 3-M syndrome who presented with acute hydrocephalus owing to haemorrhage from one of two intracranial cerebral vascular aneurysms. We suggest that other children with this disorder should be screened for similar complications.

ABSTRACT

A prototype system for digital fluorography (DF) has been developed from commercially available DSA equipment coupled to a standard screening unit. We present our initial clinical experience of this system with particular reference to the ergonomics, the image quality and the effect of image processing. We have concentrated upon dynamic studies such as upper gastrointestinal tract barium studies where the logistic advantages of the system are considerable. We have found DF to be ergonomically more efficient than conventional techniques. Using careful image processing the 512*512 matrix images were considered diagnostic for most studies assessed.

ABSTRACT

A consecutive series of ten patients with chronic bronchitis and hypercapnia were studied. All seven patients with chronic hypercapnia and one patient with intermittent hypercapnia showed evidence on skull radiographs of raised intracranial pressure. In five male and three female chronic bronchitics matched for age and ventilatory impairment, but without hypercapnia, no such radiological abnormalities were shown. The clinical significance and pathophysiology of this hitherto unreported finding is discussed. It would appear that in some cases the chronicity of hypercapnia may be diagnosed from a radiograph of the pituitary fossa.
