ABSTRACT

This study aimed to report the unprecedented volatile composition of the mosses Phyllogonium viride BRID, Orthotichella rigida (MÜLL.HAL.) B. H. ALLEN & MAGILL and Schlotheimia rugifolia (HOOK.) SCHWÄGR occurring in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, in order to elucidate the chemical composition of these species and enrich the chemotaxonomic knowledge of mosses. 28 compounds were identified, the major constituent being hexadecanoic acid, also known as palmitic acid, specifically P. viride com (38.55 %), O. rigida com (17.17 %) and S. rugifolia com (24.94 %), followed by phytol, P. viride com (3.92 %), O. rigida com (28.57 %) and S. rugifolia com (36.13 %). In addition, there was a prevalence of aliphatic hydrocarbons (25 %) and fatty acids (17.8 %) in the evaluated samples. These data contribute to the generation of new scientific information about the chemical constitution of mosses, still little studied, enriching the chemotaxonomic collection of the taxon.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to examine the phenolic content and evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of ethanol extracts from the moss species Phyllogonium viride Brid. on the pathogenic bacteria Salmonella enterica serovar enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli, and the pathogenic fungi Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. The antimicrobial activity was determined from Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC). Antioxidant activity was determined by the DPPH method. Folin-Denis reagent was used for the content of total phenolics and flavonoids and HPLC-DAD for identification of phenolic compounds. The results showed that bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities occurred at concentrations ranging from 9.76 µg/mL-78.13 µg/mL among all evaluated microorganisms. These values, considering the criteria used, suggest the P. viride extract as a potent antimicrobial. For antioxidant activity, P. viride extract was considered weak. Analysis of the phenolic content showed a wide range of compounds, with Kaempferol (0.41 mg/g) being the major compound, followed by t-cinnamic acid and caffeic acid (0.17 mg/g). Although P. viride is a species of moss not yet referenced in scientific publications of biotechnological interest, it has shown promising potential for further studies and possible application as an antimicrobial of natural origin.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We examined the relationship between reproductive allocation and vegetative growth in three monoicous sexual systems of bryophytes. The sexual systems show a gradient of increasing distance between the sexes, from gonioautoicous to cladautoicous to rhizautoicous. Here, we investigated the following two hypotheses: (1) reproductive allocation differs between sexes and sexual systems, and male reproductive allocation increases with increasing distance between male and female gametangia; and (2) reproductive allocation is negatively related to vegetative growth. METHODS: We sampled the three sexual systems, represented by three moss species of the genus Fissidens in the Atlantic Forest of Southeastern Brazil. Ramets were washed in the laboratory; the reproductive structures were detached from the vegetative ramets and sorted regarding sex and individual, dried at 70 °C for 72 h, and weighed in an ultramicrobalance. We calculated the mean reproductive and vegetative mass and reproductive allocation and used generalized linear models to test our predictions. KEY RESULTS: Reproductive allocation differed between species and sexes. It was higher in the rhizautoicous than in the cladautoicous and gonioautoicous species. Mean reproductive allocation was greater in males than in females of the rhizautoicous species, greater in females than males of the cladautoicous species, and did not differ between the sexes in the gonioautoicous species. Estimates of reproductive and vegetative mass were positively related in females of the rhizautoicous species. Vegetative mass was not related to reproductive allocation in the gonioautoicous species, but negatively related to reproductive allocation in the male and female branchlets of the cladautoicous species and in the female ramets of the rhizautoicous species. CONCLUSIONS: The reproductive allocation patterns differ between the rhizautoicous species and the 'truly' monoicous species, with shorter intersexual distances, which implies that our hypotheses were supported only in part. We suggest that the hypotheses should be reformulated and tested further by comparing 'truly' monoicous species with dioicous species and by including other genera.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the Sphagnum perichaetiale Hampe biomass was collected, characterized, and used as a biosorbent in the removal of crystal violet from water. The chemical and morphological results suggest that even after minimal experimental procedures, the biomass presented interesting properties regarding the adsorption of contaminants. Results of adsorption showed that the pH was not a relevant parameter and the best adsorbent dosage was 0.26 g L-1. The kinetic results presented an initial fast step and the equilibrium was reached after 180 min. For the equilibrium data, the best adjustment occurred for the Sips model, reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 271.05 mg g-1 and the removal percentage obtained in the maximum adsorbent dosage was 97.11%. The thermodynamic studies indicated a reversible process and that the mass-transfer phenomena is governed by the physisorption mechanism. In addition to its great performance as a biosorbent, Sphagnum perichaetiale biomass also presents economic and sustainable benefits, as its production does not require costs with reagents or energy, usually used in chemical and physical activation. The reversible process indicated that the biosorbent could be reused, decreasing the costs related to the treatment of the effluents. Thus, Sphagnum perichaetiale biomass can be considered an efficient low-cost and eco-friendly biosorbent.

ABSTRACT

Life-history traits, such as reproductive allocation, sexual expression, sex ratio, and reproductive success, are central aspects of a species' ecology and evolution. For example, bias in male and female sex expression may play a large role in determining the viability of populations in the face of environmental pressures, such as population fragmentation, climate change and habitat occupancy. Thus, in this study, we investigated reproductive traits in 10 meta-populations of Fissidens flaccidus Mitt. From each meta-population, 30 patches were randomly selected, and 1 cm2 samples were collected form each patch. A total of 20,173 ramets were analyzed and classified into male, non-sporophytic female, sporophytic female, and non-sex expressing. In addition, population density in each patch was quantified. Our results showed that relative reproductive allocation in perigonia and sporophytes is greater than perichaetia. Trade-off between sexual relative reproductive allocation and asexual gemma production was observed, suggesting an important role of female ramets in asexual reproduction. The number of male ramets does not influence the reproductive success observed in each patch, and ramet density may induce male sex expression. Thus, we concluded that reproductive allocation in male function is efficient, since fewer male ramets can assure a considerable reproductive success. Furthermore, our results suggest that there may be a habitat preference between the sexes, since male ramets are found in patches with high density and mostly below female ramets, suggesting an avoidance of direct sunlight by male ramets.

ABSTRACT

The primitiveness of bryophytes in relation to water balance promotes quick responses. When subjected to conditions of variation in the availability of water in their surroundings. Such responses (resistance or sensitivity to desiccation) can allow them to survive in different types of environments. In this work, the effect of varying the osmotic potential of the medium on the water balance of three species (Campylopus filifolius (Hornsch.) Mitt., Philonotis cernua (Wilson) Griffin & W.R.Buck, Amblystegium varium (Hedw.) Lindb.) of bryophytes was evaluated. For that, specimens (n ​​ = 150 gametophytes) were placed in environments (Petri dishes) containing different osmotic concentrations (0 MPa; -0.2 MPa; -0.4 MPa; -0.6 MPa; -0.8 MPa; -1.0 Mpa). As expected, a negative effect of water potential on the water content was observed in the three species evaluated, although each with its own characteristics. Significant differences were found between different species, between different osmotic potentials and over time. C. filifolius was more sensitive to water loss, while P. cernua and A. varium were more resistant. Morphostructural characteristics of each species, probably, were responsible for such responses, which justifies, including the environment of their occurrence (C. filifolius - epiphyte in a highly variable environment in relation to water availability, while P. cernua and A varium - rupicolous near a water source). Thus, the rapid responses in relation to the variation of the osmotic potential of the medium make B. filifolia a species well adapted to water stress conditions.


A primitividade das briófitas em relação ao balanço hídrico promove respostas rápidas quando submetidas a condições de variação da disponibilidade de água em seu entorno. Tais respostas (resistência ou sensibilidade à dessecação) podem permitir sua sobrevivência em diferentes tipos de ambientes. Neste trabalho foi avaliado o efeito da variação do potencial osmótico do meio sobre o balanço hídrico de três espécies (Campylopus filifolius (Hornsch.) Mitt., Philonotis cernua (Wilson) Griffin & W.R.Buck, Amblystegium varium (Hedw.) Lindb.) de briófitas. Para tanto, espécimes (n=150 gametófitos) foram acondicionados em ambientes (placas de Petri) contendo diferentes concentrações osmóticas (0 MPa; -0,2 MPa; -0,4 MPa; -0,6 MPa; -0,8 MPa; -1,0 Mpa). Como esperado, observou-se um efeito negativo do potencial hídrico sobre o conteúdo de água nas três espécies avaliadas, embora cada uma com características particulares. Foram verificadas diferenças significativas entre as diferentes espécies, entre os diferentes potenciais osmóticos e ao longo do tempo. C. filifolius apresentou maior sensibilidade à perda de água, enquanto que P. cernua e A. varium foram mais resistentes. Características morfoestruturais de cada espécie, provavelmente, foram responsáveis por tais respostas, o que justifica, inclusive o ambiente de ocorrência das mesmas (C. filifolius - epífita em um ambiente altamente variável em relação a disponibilidade de água, enquanto que P. cernua e A. varium - rupícolas próximas a uma fonte de água). Assim, as respostas rápidas em relação à variação do potencial osmótico do meio fazem de C. filifolius uma espécie bem adaptada a condições de estresse hídrico.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to determine the chemical composition and biological activity of the essential oil obtained from Phyllogonium viride Brid. (Phyllogoniaceae, Bryophyta), whose samples were collected in southern Brazil. For the first time, the cytotoxic activity of the essential oil of P. viride in breast and colorectal tumor cells (MCF-7 and HCT-116) was evaluated, as well as the cytotoxic potential of this oil in non-tumoral cells of human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) via MTT assay. The compounds majorly found in P. viride essential oil were ß-bazzanene (20.30 %), ß-caryophyllene (17.06 %), ß-chamigrene (14.02), and germacrene B (11.72 %). Treatment with P. viride essential oil in the different tested cell lines did not induce any toxicity in most of the tested concentrations. These data contribute to generating new scientific information about this understudied plant species. Furthermore, the chemical characterization of the compounds present in the essential oil of P. viride can lead to greater elucidation of its biotechnological potential.
