ABSTRACT

The fate of intraabdominal free omental grafts was studied in 15 dogs and it was found that a connection between the hollow organ and the transplanted omentum was established only when the former had been injured. The larger, pigeon-egg-sized free fatty omental grafts became necrotic already from the fourth day onwards being replaced by an abscess-like structure, while in thin membrane-like grafts tissue necrosis due to the creeping in of connective tissue was less marked. In both cases, an intact, omentum is creeping over the graft from the adjacent region, i.e. the ultimate covering is actually provided by the pedicle graft.

ABSTRACT

After experiments with absorbable bioplasts for substitution of skin defects, this time the absorbable fibrin glue named Tissucol was used by the authors. The experiments on 22 dogs unanimously proved that, beneath the layer of tissue adhesive, scarring occurred free of inflammation as compared to the controls where inflammatory phenomena were not excluded. The procedure has been found good and useful in high-degree burns and injuries up to their final management.

ABSTRACT

The authors performed autotransplantation of the spleen in 45 dogs. They found that, the pieces of the transplanted spleen underwent necrosis, but new malphigian bodies formed on their surface. These latter took over the sepsis-inhibiting function of the spleen. Thus the grafting of spleen can be useful and worth doing. Spleen should be transplanted in thin slices since in case of a larger piece they may necrotize and give rise to abscesses.

ABSTRACT

The authors performed auto-alloplastic replacement with flap through a round incision, 20 to 22 in mm diameter, to elaborate a suitable method for closing the fistulae which may from during cervical esophageal operations. Of the animals three died due to other causes, the others could be evaluated, and, although the operated esophagus had not been relieved from inner pressure, after 24 hours the animals were capable of drinking, later eating. The auto-alloplastic flap was followed up by histological examination for six months.

ABSTRACT

Thirty gastrotomies were performed in 15 dogs using 2/0 atraumatic needles. Various kinds of threads were used: Dexon as an absorbable suture, Black Perlon and Black Braided Silk as nonabsorbable sutures. Ten suture rows were made with each material. Single-row interrupted sutures were made with no suture in the mucosa. No suture insufficiency occurred. Dexon proved to be the most suitable material, although the nonabsorbable sutures did not cause complications, either.

ABSTRACT

Partial splenectomy was performed on 25 dogs, removing the lower third of the spleen by a transverse incision. Stronger bleeding was ligated while parenchymatous haemorrhage was covered with Gelaspon plus Topostasin or Surgicel. The substances were sutured to the spleen with Dexon suture. Both substances proved advantageous, but the application of Gelaspon induces less tissue reaction and results in thinner neocapsule.

ABSTRACT

The colon was cut through across in 32 dogs without essential preparation. The recombination of the ends was carried out by a single-row stitched suture. This one was covered with an autologous strip of parietal peritoneum and fascia which was stuck by histoacryl-N-blue. The results were good after practising this technique.

ABSTRACT

The authors carried out choledochal grafts in dogs with autologous parietal peritoneum and adjoining fascia of the musculus rectus abdominis. The patch was fixed with the tissue adhesive hystoacryl without suture. Additionally there was used an interior splinting with a polyethylene tube coated with paraffin. The inserted tube rubed off itself in case of a proper size. Adhesive must not get into the choledochus. 15 of the 20 experiments in dogs were successful.

ABSTRACT

The effect of the adhesive Histoacryl Blue on the abdominal organs (liver, stomach, intestines, colon, kidneys, bladder, aorta inferior vena cava and skin wounds) of 15 dogs was investigated histologically. The adhesive was applied in thin or thick layers in various ways: applied on intact or injured surfaces, or introduced into the parenchymal organs. The animals were killed 1, 2, 4, 8 weeks and 3 and 6 months after application of the adhesive and the organs containing Histoacryl Blue were processed histologically. The success of adhesion depended, irrespective of the organ, upon the technique of application and on the quantity of the adhesive used.

ABSTRACT

Two series of wounds made by excision were included in this experiment and both healed well with the application of Bioplast. This result encouraged the authors to recommend it for the treatment of other skin defects and burns as well. An excessive degree of epithelization was often found over the granulation tissue, and in these cases a definitive wound cover was provided with Bioplast, which needed only minor aftercare.

ABSTRACT

Experimental dermatoplasty was performed with fibrin sponge preparation in the rabbit, during the course of which the whole skin thickness was substituted. The fibrin sponge was fixed to the skin-edges with surgical adhesive. The gradually absorbed fibrin was replaced by the migrating epithelium such that epithelization developed gradually. In special cases this method can be recommended for clinical purposes.

ABSTRACT

For preservation of the pancreas, extracellular and intracellular solutions with aprotinin light microscopy showed both solutions to be suitable for a 3-hour preservation, though the intracellular solution appeared more suitable. Preservations for 6 and 24 hours have also been attempted, but these specimens showed fairly severe histological lesions.

ABSTRACT

Segment resection was performed in 15 dogs. The resected surface was covered with absorbable cellulose bioplast (Surgicel)R and fixed by the tissue adhesive Histoacryl-N-Blau. The results were checked by gross and microscopic examinations which showed that the gradually absorbed material had been replaced by a layer of connective tissue. The method is recommended for use in human operations.

ABSTRACT

After surveying the problem of pancreas transplantation the results of pancreatico-duodenal transplantation attempts performed on dogs and 20 pigs are reported. Surgically, the major pancreatic duct is anastomosed to a Roux' loop using a preserved duodenal patch around the papilla. The graft is sited unto the retroperitoneal space. The animals survived for 6 to 9 months. In some cases an increasing fibrosis of the transplantate was observed. Most often, the animals died from pneumonia. The authors want to continue their research in order to obtain better results.

ABSTRACT

Skin defects of full thickness were produced in 15 rabbits. The wounds were covered with Surgicel soaked in the animal's own blood and fixed at the edges with Histoacryl-N-Blau adhesive. A gradual epithelization took place under the covering layer. The method is suggested as an emergency measure in case of serious burns or other extensive skin injuries.

ABSTRACT

In 15 rabbits skin defects of various size were induced. The defects were covered with blood-soaked Surgicel which at the margin was attached with Histoacryl adhesive. Gradually under this cover the epithelization proceeds. The authors recommend this emergency procedure in severe cases of burns of other extended skin injuries.

ABSTRACT

End-to-end small intestinal anastomoses were performed in 20 dogs. In four dogs, the anastomosis was secured by distant single line stitches. These animals died of peritonitis. In the other animals the suture was covered with Surgicel and fixed by means of Histoacryl-N-Blau adhesive. In these cases, no insufficiency developed and in two cases were only adhesions and intestinal obstruction, respectively, observed. All the animals survived the operation. The method is recommended for securing intestinal anastomoses and stumps in patients.

ABSTRACT

Experiments were carried out on 15 dogs to repair the parietal peritoneum with an auto-alloplastic structure whose internal smooth surface was turned towards the abdominal cavity. Gross and histologic examinations have confirmed adaptation of the implant to the new environment without the formation of adhesions.
