ABSTRACT

We present a case of a 19.5 years old, hemodialyzed, girl with frequent and dramatic episodes of hypotension. She presented slightly expressed symptoms of hypothyroidism, while the serum levels of hTSH, T3, T4 and fT4 were close to the bottom border of norm. The therapy with L-thyroxin (1.75 mg/kg b. w./24h) normalized the arterial blood-pressure and led to subside coexisting symptoms of hypothyroidism.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of steroid therapy on endoscopic picture of gastric mucosa. The study comprised 22 children (17 boys and 5 girls) with the nephrotic syndrome aged 4-12 years (the mean 9 years) treated with prednisone. Children were divided into two groups taking into account duration of therapy. The group I (10 children) comprised patients with therapy duration not exceeding 3 months. The group II (12 children) comprised children treated 5 years in average. All patients underwent gastroscopic examination. Macro and microscopic lesions of gastric mucosa, their intensity and coexistence of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection were estimated. CONCLUSIONS: 1. In nephrotic children during prednisone therapy different types of gastric and duodenal mucosal inflammatory changes occur. 2. Duration of prednisone therapy does not influence significantly on location, type and severity of mucosal inflammatory changes. 3. Frequency of coexistent HP infection increases with prednisone therapy duration. 4. Prednisone therapy of nephrotic children is indication for gastric and duodenal endoscopic examination.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the work was to estimate to what extent the inhabitants of a typical agricultural region are exposed to the influence of lead compounds. 132 people at the age of 9 to 74 were included in the research. Urinary delta aminolevulinic acid (ALA) excretion was determined. The highest excretion of ALA was observed among the examined who were up to 18 years old, while the lowest was among those who were above 60 years old. These differences, however, were not statistically significant.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the research was to evaluate vitamin E influence on ochratoxin A (OTA) toxicity based on analysis of selected parameters of white and red cell system in rats. The animals were divided into groups: I--control, II--treated with OTA, III--treated with OTA and vitamin E. In group II a significant decrease in the values of hematocrit, hemoglobin level, red and white cell counts was observed. In group III an average hematocrit, hemoglobin level were significantly lower than in control group, nevertheless they were higher than in group II.

ABSTRACT

The propagation of health education is within the range of nurses' professional duties. It necessitates the use of specific methods and techniques of work. "Inasmuch as the doctor treats, it is the nurse who creates best possible conditions for recovering and keeping health conditions permitting treatment or prevention" (3, 12). The increased level of general education among people and changes in modern nursing make the nurse face new tasks in her work. Nurse must be qualified in the field of health education if she works in the out-patient medical service as well as in hospital. She must be able to convince people about the necessity of changing life style, harmful and improper habits. The fulfillment of this difficult, yet important task may change patient's and his family's health habits and behaviour. So, nowadays the nurse must combine two functions: health-nursing called health-missioner's work with sick-nursing (1, 4, 9). Work in the field of health education requires high level of professional knowledge, skills, methods, recognition of educational and sanitary needs of a social group, personal direct influence based on proper social attitude, which is very important (10, 11). Health education is best and most effectively propagated in situations of individual contact with the patient (7). Patients seeking help in medical service institutions are interested in their health and want to do something in the field (8). The analysis of nurse's and midwife's positions shows that work in out-patient health service and in hospital offers a close contact with the patient and his environment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
