ABSTRACT

Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFCs) are a promising technology as sustainable power generators as well as CO2 selective concentrators for carbon capture applications. Looking at the current cell configuration, several issues, which hinders a stable long-term operation of the system, are still unsettled. According to reference studies, the ceramic matrix is one of the most critical components in view of its high impact on the cell performance since it can influence both the stability and the reaction path. Indeed, it provides the structural support and holds the molten carbonates used as electrolyte, requiring a good mechanical strength despite of a porous structure, a high specific surface area and a sufficient electrolyte wettability to avoid the electrode flooding. The matrix structure, its key-features and degradation issues are discussed starting from the state-of-the-art lithium aluminate LiAlO2 usually strengthened with Al based reinforcement agents. Since the achievable performance is strictly dependent on manufacturing, a devoted section focuses on available techniques with a view also of their environmental impacts. Considering a still insufficient performance due to the material structural and chemical instability favoured by stressful working conditions, the electric conductive ceramics are presented as alternative matrixes permitting to increase the cell performance combining oxygen and carbonate ion paths.

ABSTRACT

The sequencing of cell-free fetal DNA in the maternal plasma through non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is an accurate genetic screening test to detect the most common fetal aneuploidies during pregnancy. The extensive use of NIPT, as a screening method, has highlighted the limits of the technique, including false positive and negative results. Feto-placental mosaicism is a challenging biological issue and is the most frequent cause of false positive and negative results in NIPT screening, and of discrepancy between NIPT and invasive test results. We are reporting on two cases of feto-placental mosaicism of trisomy 21, both with a low-risk NIPT result, identified by ultrasound signs and a subsequent amniocentesis consistent with a trisomy 21. In both cases, after the pregnancy termination, cytogenetic and/or cytogenomic analyses were performed on the placenta and fetal tissues, showing in the first case a mosaicism of trisomy 21 in both the placenta and the fetus, but a mosaicism in the placenta and a complete trisomy 21 in the fetus in the second case. These cases emphasize the need for accurate and complete pre-test NIPT counselling, as well as to identify situations at risk for a possible false negative NIPT result, which may underestimate a potential pathological condition, such as feto-placental mosaicism or fetal trisomy. Post-mortem molecular autopsy may discriminate between placental, fetal and feto-placental mosaicism, and between complete or mosaic fetal chromosomal anomalies. A multidisciplinary approach in counselling, as well as in the interpretation of biological events, is essential for the clarification of complex cases, such as feto-placental mosaicisms.

ABSTRACT

The recyclability of polylactide acid (PLA) and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate (PHBV)-based biocomposites (10%, 20% and 30% by weight of sisal natural fibre) was evaluated in this work. The mechanical and thermal properties were initially determined and were shown to be similar to commodity plastics, such as polyethylene or polypropylene. Three recycle steps were carried out and the mechanical and thermal properties of recycled samples were evaluated and compared to the reference samples. The tensile modulus increased for recycled PLA biocomposites, whereas it was hardly influenced by recycling the PHBV biocomposites. The tensile strength and deformation at the break decreased notably after the first cycle in all cases. Although all the biocomposites became more brittle with recycling, the properties were conserved along until the third cycle, proving their promising recyclability. From the data obtained from the dynamic mechanical analysis, a slight decrease of the storage modulus of PHBV was observed, whereas PLA showed a significant decay of its properties at the 3rd recyclate. The PLA specimens were filled with sisal fibres until they reached 20%wt, which seemed also less subject to the embrittlement occurring along the recycling phase. The characteristic temperatures (glass transition-Tg, crystallization-Tc, melting-Tm) of all the biocomposites were not highly affected by recycling. Only a slight decrease on the melting point of the recycled PHBV was observed suggesting an overall good reprocessability. Moreover, the processing conditions lied in the same range as the conventional plastics which would facilitate potential joint valorization techniques.

ABSTRACT

Cryosurgery is a rapidly developing discipline, alternative to conventional surgical techniques, used to destroy cancer cells by the action of low temperatures. Currently, the refrigeration is obtained via the adiabatic expansion of gases in probes used for surgeries, with the need of inherently dangerous pressurized vessels. The proposed innovative prototypal apparatus aims to reach the cryosurgical temperatures exploiting a closed-loop refrigeration system, avoiding the hazardous presence of pressurized vessels in the operating room. This study preliminarily examines the technical feasibility of the cryoablation with this machine focusing the attention on the cryoprobe design. Cryoprobe geometry and materials are assessed and the related heat transfer taking place during the cryoablation process is simulated with the aid of the computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS®Fluent. Parametric analyses are carried out varying the length of the collecting tubes and the inlet velocity of the cold carrier fluid in the cryoprobe. The values obtained for physical quantities such as the temperature reached in the treated tissue, the width of the obtained cold front, and the maximum pressure required for the cold carrier fluid are calculated and discussed in order to prove the effectiveness of the experimental apparatus and develop the machine further.

ABSTRACT

The adsorption of commercial trypsin (Try) onto epichlorohydrin cross-linked alginate-guar gum matrix has been studied at equilibrium in batch and in fixed bed column. Experiments were conducted to study the effect of ionic strength, temperature and to obtain a thermodynamic characterization of the adsorption process. The resulting adsorption isotherm fitted the Hill equation. Experimental breakthrough curve profiles were compared with the theoretical breakthrough profiles obtained from the mathematical model, bed depth service time. At pH 5.0, 1.0 g hydrated matrix adsorbed 480.0 milligram of Try per gram of dried bed. The desorption process showed 80% of Try recovery in 50 mM phosphate buffer, pH 7.00-500 mM NaCl-20% propylene glycol. The obtained results were applied to an adsorption/washing/desorption process with fresh pancreas homogenate yielded 20% of recovery and 5.7 purification factor of Try. The matrix remained functional until the fifth cycle of repeated batch enzyme adsorption. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Prog., 2018.
