ABSTRACT

Treatment of Class II subdivision malocclusion is challenging, and orthodontists frequently struggle to determine the choice of treatment. Several treatment modalities have been proposed for correcting these types of malocclusion. Thus, the aim of this case report is to present dentoalveolar and facial outcomes achieved using an unilateral Forsus fatigue-resistant device combined with fixed appliances in an adult female patient presenting with Class II subdivision malocclusion. Treatment outcome was effective producing dental esthetics and functional positive stable results after 3-year, 2-month follow-up.

ABSTRACT

Maxillary sinus retention cysts are occasionally found on dental radiographs. The objective of this study was to verify the frequency of maxillary sinus retention cysts in consecutive panoramic radiographs from 173 patients (77 males, 96 females) in an orthodontic office. The chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. Ten patients (5.8%) of the total sample presented a maxillary sinus retention cyst. Males had a higher frequency (9.1%) than females (3.1%), but this difference was not significant (P>.05). Overall, the frequency of maxillary sinus retention cysts in orthodontic patients is rather low and does not differ from the general population.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of this report is to present the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment planning strategy in the presence of an open gingival embrasure between the maxillary central incisors. BACKGROUND: The open gingival embrasure or "black triangle" is a visible triangular space in the cervical region of the maxillary incisors. It appears when the gingival papilla does not completely fill in the interdental space. The space may occur due to: (1) disease or surgery with periodontal attachment loss resulting in gingival recession; (2) severely malaligned maxillary incisors; (3) divergent roots; or (4) triangular-shaped crowns associated with or without periodontal problems and alveolar bone resorptions. REPORT: The post-treatment prevalence in adult orthodontic patients is estimated to be around 40% compromising the esthetic result. CONCLUSION: Several methods of managing patients with open gingival embrasure exist, but the interdisciplinary aspects of treatment must be emphasized to achieve the best possible result. The orthodontist can play a significant role in helping to manage these cases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Various treatment strategies are available to treat cases of an undesirable black triangle and are dependent on the etiology of the condition.

ABSTRACT

A survey was performed in two public schools of Porto Alegre, with the purpose of demonstrate the presence of erupted pennanent teeth in children with age ranging from 6 to 1 O years old. The sample consisted of 327 patients and the variables examined were age, sex and race. In the 6 year old group, the lowers incisors (78,7%) erupted earlier than the first molars(75,9%) and the teeth on the lower arch erupted before the teeth on upper arch. It was not observed a significant difference (p<0,05) in the time of eruption of the teeth for the variablessex and race. A literature review of teeth evolution process and related factors were alço described.
