ABSTRACT

Lévy walks represent a class of stochastic models (space-time-coupled continuous-time random walks) with applications ranging from the laser cooling to the description of animal motion. The initial model was intended for the description of turbulent dispersion as given by the Richardson law. The existence of this Richardson regime in the original model was recently challenged [T. Albers and G. Radons, Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 104501 (2018)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.120.104501]: The mean squared displacement (MSD) in this model diverges, i.e., does not exist, in the regime, where it presumably should reproduce the Richardson law. In the Supplemental Material to that work the authors present (but do not investigate in detail) a generalized model interpolating between the original one and the Drude-like models known to show no divergences. In the present work we give a detailed investigation of the ensemble MSD in this generalized model, show that the behavior of the MSD in this model is the same (up to prefactors) as in the original one in the domains where the MSD in the original model does exist, and investigate the conditions under which the MSD in the generalized model does exist or diverges. Both ordinary and aged situations are considered.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Serious, but rare adverse events following immunization (AEFI) have been reported with yellow fever (YF) 17D vaccine, including severe allergic reactions, YF vaccine-associated neurologic disease (YEL-AND) and YF vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD). The frequency with which YEL-AND and YEL-AVD occur in YF endemic countries is mostly unknown. METHODS: From 2007 to 2010, eight African countries - Benin, Cameroon, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo- implemented large-scale YF preventive vaccination campaigns. Each country established vaccine pharmacovigilance systems that included standard case definitions, procedures to collect and transport biological specimens, and National Expert Committees to review data and classify cases. Staff in all countries received training and laboratory capacity expanded. RESULTS: In total, just over 38 million people were vaccinated against YF and 3116 AEFIs were reported of which 164 (5%) were classified as serious. Of these, 22 (13%) were classified as YF vaccine reactions, including 11 (50%) hypersensitivity reactions, six (27%) suspected YEL-AND, and five (23%) suspected YEL-AVD. The incidence per 100,000 vaccine doses administered was 8.2 for all reported AEFIs, 0.43 for any serious AEFI, 0.058 for YF vaccine related AEFIs, 0.029 for hypersensitivity reactions, 0.016 for YEL-AND, and 0.013 for YEL-AVD. Our findings were limited by operational challenges, including difficulties in obtaining recommended biological specimens leading to incomplete laboratory evaluation, unknown case ascertainment, and variable levels of staff training and experience. CONCLUSIONS: Despite limitations, active case-finding in the eight different countries did not find an incidence of YF vaccine associated AEFIs that was higher than previous reports. These data reinforce the safety profile of YF vaccine and support the continued use of attenuated YF vaccine during preventive mass vaccination campaigns in YF endemic areas.

ABSTRACT

The African black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) has adapted to a low iron diet during evolution and is thus prone to iron overload in captivity, which is associated with a number of serious disorders. A S88T polymorphism in the HFE gene has been suggested as a potential genetic basis of increased iron uptake in the black rhinoceros, while the Indian rhinoceros is thought to be unaffected by iron overload in captivity. In the present study, the histopathology and distribution of iron accumulations in five black rhinoceroses with iron overload syndrome were characterized and compared with three Indian rhinoceroses (Rhinoceros unicornis) and one African white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). At necropsy examination, iron storage in black rhinoceroses was not associated with gross lesions. Microscopically, the most consistent and highest degree of iron load was found in the spleen, liver, small intestine and lung. There was minimal fibrosis and single cell necrosis in the liver. Endocrine organs, lymph nodes, heart and kidney were less often and less markedly affected. Unexpectedly, Indian rhinoceroses also showed iron load in the spleen and smaller amounts in organs similar to the black rhinoceros except for in the heart, while the white rhinoceros had only minor detectable iron storage in intestine, liver and lung. Sequence analysis confirmed the HFE S88T polymorphism in black but not in Indian rhinoceroses. The results indicate that Indian rhinoceroses may also be affected by iron storage in captivity, although in a milder form than the black rhinoceros, and therefore challenge the relevance of the S88T polymorphism in the HFE gene of black rhinoceroses as the underlying cause for iron overload.
