ABSTRACT

Prostate cancer (PC) is the most common cancer among men worldwide and its pathogenesis is complex. The development of PC depends on family and environmental factors. Vitamin D can be associated with both of these factors. Its reduced serum concentration has been reported in a number of tumors. However, in the case of PC, the study results are conflicting. Polymorphism of VDR gene may also be involved in the development of this cancer. The aim of the study was to compare the frequency of selected polymorphisms in patients with PC and in men without this disease. Seventy-two Caucasian males aged 35-75 years with histologically proven PC (T1/T2) were enrolled in the study group. Seventy-two random age-matched Caucasian out-patient subjects formed the control group. VDR (FokI, BsmI and TaqI) gene polymorphism (rs2228570, rs1544410, rs731236) was determined by TaqMan® SNP Genotyping. The Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) - p> 0.05 was in all studied polymorphisms. Deviations from the HWE were not found. There were no differences between the study group and the control group. No difference was found when the groups were compared in terms of age or the Gleason score.

ABSTRACT

The Department of Occupational Hygiene, State School of Hygiene at the National Institute of Hygiene was established in 1926/27. Prof. Brunon Nowakowski was its founder and the first Director. Teaching and providing of highly qualified personnel for occupational medicine institutions was the main area of the Department's activity. The Department also carried out scientific research focusing on organisation of labour hygiene in Poland, and occupational diseases, lead poisoning in particular. The results of studies carried out by the Department provided the basis for the elaboration of numerous legal regulations in the area of occupational medicine.

ABSTRACT

Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha administered in the therapy of advanced cancer influences certain hormones and cytokines secretion. In turn, these also modulate the biological activity of Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha. It has been shown in several studies that the cytokine Interleukin -6 (IL)-6 is produced in response to various hormones and other cytokines eg. Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF alpha). In our study we focused on the Interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion in response to TNF alpha administration in 12 patients undergoing TNF alpha biotherapy due to advanced neoplastic disease. Plasma IL-6 was estimated prior and at various time points (2, 3, 5 a,d 12 hours) after TNF alpha intravenous infusion. IL-6 level was estimated with ELISA method. In conclusion, we suggest the stimulating influence of hrec TNF alpha administered as therapy for advanced cancer on IL-6 secretion.
