ABSTRACT

This research aims to establish an experimental surgical model for access to the renal pedicle and kidney and to determine renal length measurement via the kidney/aorta ratio (K/AO) using ultrasound. Fifteen swine underwent ventral median celiotomy with a supraumbilical transverse incision to access the right and left renal pedicles and induce renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRR). The kidneys were evaluated using ultrasonography to standardize renal length, aortic diameter, and the K/AO. Assessment was performed at 2 time points: 1 h before and 24 h after the surgery to induce IRR. Blood and urine samples were collected to assess renal function. Histologic evaluation of kidney fragments was also conducted. The proposed abdominal cavity access method proved to be highly efficient for exposing the right and left renal pedicles and inducing IRR. Serum levels of urea, creatinine, calcium, and phosphorus, as well as levels of the urinary protein/urinary creatinine ratio and urinary GGT, did not show significant differences. Acute kidney injury was confirmed through histopathology. The mean lengths of the right and left kidneys were 82.63 and 87.64 mm, respectively. The values of the right and left K/AO were 9.81 and 10.38, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the K/AO ratio before and after IRR. The proposed surgical model allowed surgical intervention on the renal pedicles without intra- or postoperative complications. Furthermore, the K/AO could be measured through ultrasonography, establishing a reference for healthy animals.

BACKGROUND: Phase angle (PhA), obtained from the bioimpedance analysis, is widely used in clinical situations and in sports. This study evaluated the association between PhA with body composition and physical performance of handball athletes. METHODS: 43 national-level players (22.19 ± 3.86 years) of both sexes were evaluated regarding anthropometry, body composition, squat (SJ) and countermovement (CMJ) jumps, handgrip strength, and cardiorespiratory fitness. RESULTS: We verified a correlation between PhA of the whole body and fat-free mass (r = 0.511), body mass index (r = 0.307), and body fat % (r = -0.303). There was a positive correlation between PhA of the whole body and SJ (r = 0.376), CMJ (r = 0.419), and handgrip for the dominant hand (r = 0.448). Moreover, PhA of the upper limbs was more strongly correlated with handgrip for the dominant (r = 0.630) and non-dominant hand (r = 0.575) compared to PhA of the whole body considering both sexes. Similarly, segmental PhA had a stronger significant correlation with SJ (r = 0.402) and handgrip for the dominant hand (r = 0.482) in males, as well as CMJ (r = 0.602) in females, compared to PhA of the whole body. CONCLUSION: PhA of the whole body was positively related to fat-free mass, body mass index, body fat %, and lower- and upper-limbs strength in handball athletes. Segmental PhA might be used as a tool for estimating lower and upper limbs performance considering the sex, in preference to the PhA of the whole body.

ABSTRACT

Classical experiments using hierarchical stimuli to investigate the ability of capuchin monkeys to integrate visual information based on global or local clues reported findings suggesting a behavioral preference for local information of the image. Many experiments using mosaics have been conducted with capuchin monkeys to identify some of their perceptual phenotypes. As the identification of an image in a mosaic demands the integration of elements that share some visual features, we evaluated the discrimination of shapes presented in solid and mosaic stimuli in capuchin monkeys. Shape discrimination performance was tested in 2 male adult capuchin monkeys in an experimental chamber with a touchscreen video monitor, in three experiments: (i) evaluation of global and local processing using hierarchical stimuli; (ii) evaluation of target detection using simple discrimination procedures; (iii) evaluation of shape discrimination using simple discrimination and delayed matching-to-sample procedures. We observed that both monkeys had preferences for local processing when tested by hierarchical stimuli. Additionally, detection performance for solid and mosaic targets was highly significant, but for shape discrimination tasks we found significant performance when using solid figures, non-significant performance when using circle and square shapes in mosaic stimuli, and significant performance when using Letter X and Number 8 shapes in mosaic stimuli. Our results are suggestive that the monkeys respond to local contrast and partly to global contrast in mosaic stimuli.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important public health concern and that may lead to severe neural sequels, such as color vision deficits. Methods: We evaluated the color vision of 10 TBI patients with normal cognitive function using a color discrimination test in a fixed saturation level. We also analyzed computerized tomography scans to identify the local of the brain damages. Results: Four TBI patients that had lesions in brain areas of the ventral visual streams, five TBI patients had lesions inferred in brain areas of the dorsal visual stream, and one TBI patient had lesion in the occipital area. All the patients had cognitive and color vision screened and they had characterized the chromatic discrimination at high and low saturation. All participants had no significant cognitive impairment in the moment of the color vision test. Additionally, they had perfect performance for discrimination of chromatic stimulus at high saturation and similar to controls (n = 37 age-matched participants). Three of four TBI patients with lesions in the ventral brain and one patient with lesion in the occipital area had impairment of the chromatic discrimination at low saturation. All TBI patients with lesions in the dorsal brain had performance similar or slightly worse than the controls. Conclusion: Chromatic discrimination at low saturation was associated to visual damage in the ventral region of the brain and is a potential tool for functional evaluation of brain damage in TBI patients.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to summarize the effectiveness of amino acid supplementation on muscle strength, muscle volume, and functional capacity in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. For this, in November 2022, a search was carried out in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases, identifying a total of 2182 documents, of which only 4 were included in the present review. The included studies had 148 participants (47 men and 101 women), with a minimum age of 53 and a maximum of 92 years, and supplementation times of 13 to 30 days (1 to 3 times a day). For the results, in relation to muscle performance, when comparing the control and experimental groups, greater muscle atrophy was observed in the pre- and post-moments of the control group, in relation to the experimental group. In addition, studies suggest a good tendency for muscle mass gain, and improvement in the functional capacities of patients who used supplementation. Therefore, the use of amino acids after TKA surgery reduces muscle atrophy, which preserves muscle mass and leads to better performance in tests of strength and functional capacity, when compared to the use of a placebo.

ABSTRACT

Recent research has proposed new approaches to investigate color vision in Old World Monkeys by measuring suprathreshold chromatic discrimination. In this study, we aimed to extend this approach to New World Monkeys with different color vision genotypes by examining their performance in chromatic discrimination tasks along different fixed chromatic saturation axes. Four tufted capuchin monkeys were included in the study, and their color vision genotypes were one classical protanope, one classical deuteranope, one non-classical protanope, and a normal trichromat. During the experiments, the monkeys were required to perform a chromatic discrimination task using pseudoisochromatic stimuli with varying target saturations of 0.06, 0.04, 0.03, and 0.02 u'v' units. The number of errors made by the monkeys along different chromatic axes was recorded, and their performance was quantified using the binomial probability of their hits during the tests. Our results showed that dichromatic monkeys made more errors near the color confusion lines associated with their specific color vision genotypes, while the trichromatic monkey did not demonstrate any systematic errors. At high chromatic saturation, the trichromatic monkey had significant hits in the chromatic axes around the 180° chromatic axis, whereas the dichromatic monkeys had errors in colors around the color confusion lines. At lower saturation, the performance of the dichromatic monkeys became more challenging to differentiate among the three types, but it was still distinct from that of the trichromatic monkey. In conclusion, our findings suggest that high saturation conditions can be used to identify the color vision dichromatic phenotype of capuchin monkeys, while low chromatic saturation conditions enable the distinction between trichromats and dichromats. These results extend the understanding of color vision in New World Monkeys and highlight the usefulness of suprathreshold chromatic discrimination measures in exploring color vision in non-human primates.

ABSTRACT

The Finger Tapping Test (FTT) is a classical neuropsychological test that assesses motor functioning, and recently it has been employed using smartphones. For classical protocols, it has been observed that sex and handedness influence the performance during the test. By assessing the influence of sex and handedness on the test, it is possible to adjust the performance measurements to ensure the validity of test results and avoid sex- and handedness-related bias. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of sex and handedness on smartphone-based FTT performance. We developed an Android application for the FTT and recruited 40 males and 40 females to carry out three spatial designs on it (protocols I, II, and III). Participants' performance was measured using the global, temporal, and spatial parameters of the FTT. We observed that for the performance in protocol I, handedness had a significant influence on global and temporal variables, while the interaction between handedness and sex had a greater influence on spatial variables. For protocols II and III, we observed that handedness had a significant influence on global, temporal, and spatial variables compared to the other factors. We concluded that the smartphone-based test is partly influenced by handedness and sex, and in clinical implications, these factors should be considered during the evaluation of the smartphone-based FTT.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Cervical cancer is caused by a persistent infection with some types of human papillomavirus (HPV), and its treatment entails chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. This may cause different kinds of dysfunction in the pelvic floor. Hence, physiotherapy plays an important role in the evaluation and treatment of urogynecological dysfunctions occasioned by the oncological treatment. Objective To develop a digital technology in application format to help physiotherapists in the assessment of pelvic dysfunctions after cervical cancer. Methods A digital technology in application format was developed after approval from the Ethics in Research Committee of the Tropical Medical Center. The instrument was developed by a physiotherapist with expertise and experience in the area. The researchers held meetings to finalize the creation of the checklist, and the application was programmed using the Android Studio Environment. In the end, the application was evaluated by two physiotherapist experts in the field. Results The application created displays five sections addressing the symptoms of urinary dysfunction, sexual function, anal function, pain and alterations such as: lymphedema, vaginal stenosis and vaginal fibrosis. Conclusion The use of the application may help physiotherapists in the assessment of pelvic dysfunctions after cervical cancer.


Resumo Introdução O câncer de colo do útero é causado pela infecção persistente por alguns tipos de papilomavírus humano e o seu tratamento envolve quimioterapia, radioterapia e cirurgia, podendo ocasio-nar diferentes disfunções no assoalho pélvico. Desta forma, a fisioterapia tem papel importante na avaliação e tratamento das disfunções pélvicas decorrentes do tratamento oncológico. Objetivo Desenvolver uma tecnologia digital em formato de aplicativo para auxiliar fisioterapeutas na avaliação de disfunções pélvicas após câncer de colo do útero. Métodos Trata-se do desenvolvimento de uma tecnologia digital em formato de aplicativo, que foi realizado após aprovação do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa do Núcleo de Medicina Tropical. O instrumento foi elaborado por fisioterapeutas com expertise e experiência na área. Os pesquisadores realizaram reuniões para finalizar o processo de criação do checklist, e o aplicativo foi programado em ambiente Androide Studio. Ao final, o aplicativo foi avaliado por duas fisioterapeutas especialistas na área. Resultados O aplicativo criado apresenta cinco capítulos abordando sintomas de disfunção urinária, função sexual, função anal, dor e alterações como linfedema, estenose vaginal e fibrose vaginal. Conclusão A utilização do aplicativo poderá auxiliar os profissionais fisioterapeutas na avaliação de disfunções pélvicas após câncer de colo do útero.

ABSTRACT

Color vision tests use estimative of threshold color discrimination or number of correct responses to evaluate performance in chromatic discrimination tasks. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages. In the present investigation, we compared the number of errors during color discrimination task in normal trichromats and participants with color vision deficiency (CVD) using pseudoisochromatic stimuli at fixed saturation levels. We recruited 28 normal trichromats and eight participants with CVD. Cambridge Color Test was used to categorize their color vision phenotype, and those with a phenotype suggestive of color vision deficiency had their L- and M-opsin genes genotyped. Pseudoisochromatic stimuli were shown with target chromaticity in 20 vectors radiating from the background chromaticity and saturation of 0.06, 0.04, 0.03, 0.02, 0.01, and 0.005 u'v' units. Each stimulus condition appeared in four trials. The number of errors for each stimulus condition was considered an indicator of the participant's performance. At high chromatic saturation, there were fewer errors from both phenotypes. The errors of the normal trichromats had no systematic variation for high saturated stimuli, but below 0.02 u'v' units, there was a discrete prevalence of tritan errors. For participants with CVD, the errors happened mainly in red-green chromatic vectors. A three-way ANOVA showed that all factors (color vision phenotype, stimulus saturation, and chromatic vector) had statistically significant effects on the number of errors and that stimulus saturation was the most important main effect. ROC analysis indicated that the performance of the fixed saturation levels to identify CVD was better between 0.02 and 0.06 u'v' units reaching 100%, while saturation of 0.01 and 0.005 u'v' units decreased the accuracy of the screening of the test. We concluded that the color discrimination task using high saturated stimuli separated normal trichromats and participants with red-green color vision deficiencies with high performance, which can be considered a promising method for new color vision tests based in frequency of errors.

ABSTRACT

Quando comparado aos demais ossos da face, o osso frontal é raramente acometido por fraturas, sendo essa menor ocorrência relacionada à sua maior resistência. Nosso estudo relata um caso clínico de paciente do gênero masculino, 27 anos, vítima de acidente motociclístico, encaminhado ao Hospital da Restauração - Governador Paulo Guerra com fraturas complexas do terço superior e médio da face. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo é demonstrar a resolução cirúrgica dessas fraturas de face, por meio da utilização do acesso supraciliar com incisão em "asa de borboleta" e infraorbital possibilitando a redução e fixação. Todas as abordagens cirúrgicas para redução do osso frontal têm como objetivo promover respostas estéticas, restaurar a função e prevenir complicações cirúrgicas, não dependendo apenas da gravidade da fratura, mas também, do paciente e da preferência do cirurgião. O acesso supraciliar em "asa de borboleta" é feito a partir de uma incisão linear na região da glabela, com extensões laterais para as sobrancelhas. Dessa maneira ele garante boa visualização e exposição do campo operatório com acesso direto e simples. Por fim, o acesso borboleta mostrou-se uma boa opção de abordagem para fraturas da parede anterior do osso frontal, apesar de demonstrar desvantagem estética na ponte nasal segundo a literatura, no presente caso essa filosofia não é compartilhada, já que a "camuflagem" da incisão linear na ruga nasal mostrou-se esteticamente satisfatória... BACKGROUND: Correct management of Hoffa fractures is a challenge in the clinical context. Open reduction along with internal fixation should be the therapy of choice. Mechanical trials with the main internal fixation systems conducted by individualized finite element (FEM) models, to date, have been neglected. The aim of this study was to biomechanically analyze four fixation methods for the treatment of Type II Hoffa fracture (OTA Classification: 33B3.2∗ lateral) using FEM. METHODS: Four internal fixators were developed to treat Type II Hoffa fracture using finite elements: 4.5 mm cortical screws and 7 mm cannulated screw in anterior-to-posterior and posterior-to-anterior directions (4.5AP, 4.5 PA, 7AP and 7 PA). Under the same conditions, fractural deviation in the vertical, maximum and minimum principal and Von Mises directions in the syntheses used were evaluated. RESULTS: The vertical displacements evaluated were 0.7 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.8 mm and 0.3 mm; the values of maximum were 6.14 Mpa, 6.15 hPa, 6.0 Mpa and 6.2 Mpa, the values obtained from minimum data were 6.26 Mpa, -6.45 Mpa, -7.3 MPa and -6.8 Mpa and the maximum values of Von Mises peak stress were 185.0 Mpa, 194.1 Mpa, 143.6 Mpa and 741.4 Mpa, for the fixation models 4.5AP, 4.5 PA, 7AP and 7 PA, respectively. CONCLUSION: The 7 mm-cannulated screw fixation system yielded the best mechanical results evaluated by FEM in the treatment of Type II Hoffa fracture, causing a decrease in vertical displacement when used in retrograde and in Von Mises peak stress in anterograde.

Chemical management is the most widely adopted technique to control weeds in sugarcane crops. Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) is among the most difficult species to control. Herbicides need to be absorbed and translocated in a sufficient amount for the tuber chain to be effective. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the herbicides sulfentrazone, diclosulam, imazapic, imazapyr, halosulfuron, ethoxysulfuron, monosodium methyl arsenate (MSMA), and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in controlling C. rotundus and reducing the viability of its tubers. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design, with nine treatments and four replications. The herbicides sulfentrazone (800 g active ingredient ­ ai·ha?1), diclosulam (193.17 g ai·ha?1), imazapic (133 g ai·ha?1), and imazapyr (500 g acid equivalent ­ ae·ha?1) were applied in preemergence at five days after planting the tubers, while halosulfuron (112.5 g ai·ha?1), ethoxysulfuron (135 g ai·ha?1), MSMA (1,975 g ai·ha?1), and 2,4-D (1,340 g ae·ha?1) were applied in postemergence (4 to 5 leaves). The parameters visual control, shoot dry matter, number of tubers and bulbs, weight of tubers + bulbs, number of epigeal manifestations, and tuber viability were analyzed. The herbicides diclosulam, halosulfuron, and ethoxysulfuron provided 100% control of the shoot at 90 days after application (DAA). All herbicides reduced the number of bulbs, weight of tubers + bulbs, and shoot dry matter. The herbicides sulfentrazone, imazapic, halosulfuron, ethoxysulfuron, and MSMA provided the highest reduction in tuber viability.(AU)


O manejo químico é o mais adotado para o controle de plantas daninhas na cultura da cana-de-açúcar. Entre as espécies de difícil controle está a tiririca (Cyperus rotundus L.). Os herbicidas utilizados precisam ser absorvidos e transportados para a cadeia de tubérculos em quantidades suficientes para serem eficazes. Assim, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a eficácia dos herbicidas sulfentrazona, diclosulam, imazapique, imazapir, halossulfurom, etoxissulfurom, metano arseniato ácido monossodico (MSMA) e ácido diclorofenoxiacético (2,4-D) no controle de C. rotundus e na redução da viabilidade de seus tubérculos. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente randomizado, com nove tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os herbicidas sulfentrazone (800 g ingrediente ativo ­ i.a.·ha-1), diclosulam (193,17 g i.a.·ha-1), imazapique (133 g i.a.·ha-1) e imazapir (500 g equivalente ­ e.a.·ha-1) foram aplicados cinco dias após o plantio dos tubérculos em pré-emergência, enquanto que o halossulfurom (112,5 g i.a.·ha-1), etoxissulfurom (135 g i.a.·ha-1), MSMA (1.975 g i.a.·ha-1) e 2,4-D (1.340 g e.a.·ha-1) foram aplicados em pós-emergência (4 a 5 folhas). Foram feitas avaliações visuais de controle, massa seca da parte aérea, número de tubérculos e bulbos, peso de tubérculos + bulbos, número de manifestações epígeas e viabilidade de tubérculos. Aos 90 dias após a aplicação (DAA) os herbicidas diclosulam, halossulfurom e etoxissulfurom propiciaram 100% de controle da parte aérea. Todos os herbicidas reduziram o número de bulbos, peso de tubérculos + bulbos e massa seca da parte aérea. Sulfentrazona, imazapic, halossulfurom, etoxissulfurom e MSMA foram os herbicidas que mais reduziram a viabilidade dos tubérculos.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Staghorn, struvite or coral calculus are the ones that completely or partially occupies the renal pelvis and branches to the renal calices. The presence of renal calculi of any kind in the urinary tracts is related to the appearing of malign tumor in the kidneys, especially in the absence or failed treatment. A male patient, 51 years old, native of Manaus, reports about dysuria and polyuria associated with constant fever episodes and urinary tract infections with improvement by using several antibiotics but returning the symptoms after suspending it. The patient return was in a month and no improvement of the pain in the patient's feeling, with the tomography image tests result showing atrophy in the right kidney, which presents dilatation of the collector system, that it's filled with material with density varying between thick liquid and soft parts (average of 45 UH), in addition to calculus in the pelvis and ureteropelvic junction, suggesting a pattern for xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and matching previous history of right staghorn calculus. The association between kidney cancer and staghorn calculus should be consider through the treatment. Patients with renal diseases of severe prognosis in both kidneys must be kept under constant surveillance by the urology and nephrology team, the association of both clinics is essential to a fortunate ending like the case reported.

ABSTRACT

Latex proteins from P. pudica (LPPp) have anti-inflammatory activity. In the present study, LPPp was evaluated to protect animals against inflammatory ulcerative colitis (UC). UC was induced by intracolonic instillation of a 6% acetic acid solution and the animals received LPPp (10, 20 or 40 mg/kg) by intraperitoneal route 1 h before and 17 h after acetic acid injection. Eighteen hours after instillation of acetic acid, the mice were euthanized and the colons were excised to determine the wet weight, macroscopic and microscopic lesion scores, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, IL1-ß levels, glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The results revealed that LPPp treatment (40 mg/kg) had a protective effect on acetic acid-induced colitis by reducing the wet weight, macroscopic and microscopic scores of intestinal lesions and colonic MPO activity. Additionally, LPPp inhibited tissue oxidative stress, since decreases in GSH consumption, MDA concentration and SOD activity were observed. The treatment with LPPp reduced the levels of cytokine IL-1ß, contributing to the reduction of colon inflammation. Biochemical investigation showed that LPPp comprises a mixture of proteins containing proteinases, chitinases and proteinase inhibitors. These data suggest that LPPp has a protective effect against intestinal damage through mechanisms that involve the inhibition of inflammatory cell infiltration, cytokine release and oxidative stress.

ABSTRACT

A disaster is an unexpected event causing death or injury to many people. In such events, a large number of casualties may take place, exposing corpses to a harsh environment for days or months. DNA profiling is recognized as one of the primary methods for identifying mass disaster victims, especially when it involves decomposed or fragmented bodies. The objective of this study was to standardize the use of urinary bladder swabs as a source of DNA for the identification of decomposing and carbonized human bodies by Forensic Genetic techniques. Samples' DNA was extracted using both organic and Chelex® resin methods; quantified by qPCR and amplified with PowerPlex® Fusion System (Promega Corporation). The results of this study show that between the two methodologies used for DNA extraction, the organic method presented higher DNA yields in relation to the minimum acceptable for the amplification, while Chelex®, although not having a high yield, still allowed obtaining significant amounts of DNA for amplification. The use of bladder swabs has proven to be a viable source of DNA for human identification, since besides reproducible and reliable results, this type of sample allows a significant reduction in the time and cost required for analysis.

ABSTRACT

Color vision assessment can be done using pseudoisochromatic stimuli, which has a luminance noise to eliminate brightness differences between the target and background of the stimulus. It is not clear the influence of the luminance noise on color discrimination. We investigated the effect of change in the luminance noise limits on color discrimination. Eighteen trichromats and ten congenital dichromats (eight protans, two deutans) had their color vision evaluated by the Cambridge Colour Test, and were genetically tested for diagnostic confirmation. The stimuli were composed of a mosaic of circles in a 5° circular field. A subset of the circles differed in chromaticity from the remaining field, forming a letter C. Color discrimination was estimated in stimulus conditions differing in luminance noise range: (i) 6-20 cd/m2; (ii) 8-18 cd/m2; (iii) 10-16 cd/m2; and (iv) 12-14 cd/m2. Six equidistant luminance values were used within the luminance noise limits with the mean stimulus luminance maintained constant under all conditions. A four-alternative, forced-choice method was applied to feed a staircase procedure to estimate color discrimination thresholds along eight chromatic axes. An ellipse model was adjusted to the eight color discrimination thresholds. The parameters of performance were threshold vector lengths and the ellipse area. Results were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test with a significance level of 5%. The linear function model was applied to analyze the dependence of the discrimination parameters on the noise luminance limits. The first derivative of linear function was used as an indicator of the rate of change in color discrimination as a function of luminance noise changes. The rate of change of the ellipse area as a function of the luminance range in dichromats was higher than in trichromats (p < 0.05). Significant difference was also found for individual thresholds in half of the axes we tested. Luminance noise had a greater effect on color discrimination ability of dichromats than the trichromats, especially when the chromaticities were close to their protan and deutan color confusion lines.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of this thymol-rich oil in the proliferation of human adipose tissue-derived stem cells. METHODS: Stem cells were isolated from human adipose tissue by liposuction. After the first passage, cells were cultivated in triplicate for three days in control medium and medium supplemented with three oil samples (1.0 µg/mL, 5.0 µg/mL, and 25.0 µg/mL). Cells were analyzed by the MTT assay at passage 1 (P1), and cell proliferation of control and 1 µg/mL groups was determined with a hemocytometer at P2 and P3. RESULTS: Viability of the essential oil-treated cells was significantly higher than the control group at P1 (p = 0.0008). The treatment with the oil, at a concentration of 1 µg/mL, led to increases of 24.8% at P1 and 43.0% at P3 in the rate of cell proliferation compared with control cells. CONCLUSION: Supplementing culture medium with essential oil of Lippia origanoides increased cell proliferation, especially at later passages.

Several authors have called attention to the evolutionary importance of phenotypic plasticity and niche construction, because such phenomena require a new status and a new perspective. Drosophila species are traditionally used as models in investigations of phenotypic plasticity, although the majority of such research has been conducted with species of the subgenus Sophophora, primarily Drosophila melanogaster. In this study, we investigated the phenotypic plasticity of Drosophila cardini, a Neotropical species of the subgenus Drosophila, and focused on the wing size, wing shape, thorax length and wing: thorax ratio of lines that were collected in the Brazilian savanna and exposed to different temperatures during growth. All of the analyzed traits presented plasticity to temperature, and the reaction norms were similar to those previously found in other drosophilid species; in addition, the maximum values were consistent with the temperature variations at the collection sites. The specimens that emerged at low temperatures were larger and had more rounded wings compared with those that emerged at high temperatures, which were smaller and had narrower wings. We hypothesized that the differences observed in the shape of the wings might be associated with flight performance. Nevertheless, further investigation of the relationships among wing shape, wing loading and flight performance is required. Investigations on phenotypic plasticity using species with diverse ecologies should help us to better understand how this phenomenon operates in nature, and studies of this type must be encouraged.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease in the Amazon region is considered an emerging anthropozoonosis with a predominance of the discrete typing units (DTUs) TcI and TcIV. These DTUs are responsible for cases of acute disease associated with oral transmission. Chronic disease cases have been detected through serological surveys. However, the mode of transmission could not be determined, or any association of chronic disease with a specific T. cruzi DTU's. The aim of this study was to characterize Trypanosoma cruzi in patients with chronic Chagas disease in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. METHODS: Blood culture and xenodiagnosis were performed in 36 patients with positive serology for Chagas disease who participated in a serological survey performed in urban and rural areas of Manaus, Amazonas. DNA samples were extracted from the feces of triatomines used for xenodiagnosis, and the nontranscribed spacer of the mini-exon gene and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII) were amplified by PCR and sequenced. RESULTS: Blood culture and xenodiagnosis were negative in 100% of samples; however, molecular techniques revealed that in 13 out of 36 (36%) fecal samples from xenodiagnosis, T. cruzi was characterized as the DTU TcI, and different haplotypes were identified within the same DTU. CONCLUSION: The DTU TcI, which is mainly associated with acute cases of Chagas disease in the Amazon region, is also responsible for chronic infection in patients from a region in the State of Amazonas.
