ABSTRACT

Expression of Ki-67, thymidine phosphorylase (TP) and PTEN were assessed in various grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in order to evaluate their potentials of predicting the gravity of possible damage to the epithelium as well as pro- or regression of CIN. Ki-67 and TP levels were shown to correlate directly with CIN grade. It was suggested that a small number of cases of Ki-67 and TP expression absence (15%), exclusively in CIN3 samples, be due to imminent progression to invasive cancer. Both separately and in combination, Ki-67 and TP expression indices should be regarded as having a potential as markers for cervical carcinoma diagnosis, grade and clinical course.

ABSTRACT

Formation of registers of families afflicted by tumors of certain sites and dynamic follow-up of "healthy" members of such families is a new approach to early diagnosis and prevention of cancer. The results of a clinico-genetic study of hormone-dependent tumors of the female genitals and breast served as a basis for the development of a pattern of medico-genetic follow-up which, in turn, may facilitate integration of the above method with treatment for cancer of said and other sites.

ABSTRACT

The results of laser treatment of 215 outpatients with cervical and vulval pathology are discussed. An unfocused high-energy CO2 laser was used to irradiate large areas of the vulva whereas a focused one--for treating precancer and early cancer of the uterine cervix by evaporation and conization. A low-energy helium-neon laser was used for the treatment of concomitant and precancerous lesions of the organs either alone or in combination with the CO2 laser. Said combination proved the most effective.

ABSTRACT

Cancer pain relief is a public health problem. A WHO method has been developed, which provides for drugs to be administered immediately if there is pain, to be given "by the clock" rather than "on demand" and to be increased from nonopioids to weak opioids and then to strong opioids until the patient is free from pain.

ABSTRACT

Medico-genetic examinations of 122 patients with multiple and/or early-onset basalioma revealed 5 cases of basal cell nevus syndrome. Clinical data on 5 probands and 3 first-degree relatives with the syndrome are presented.
