ABSTRACT

In the post-Chernobyl period of time the quantity of children operated for congenital cerebral and cerebrospinal hernia has been increased almost by two times. The signs of degeneration were not observed while morphological study of hernial sac wall in 96 children operated on from 1981 till 1986 year. Of 167 children operated on after the Chernobyl accident (1986-1992 yrs) in 10 (5.9%) of them the degeneration of substantia medullaris astrocytes was observed.

ABSTRACT

Of the 128 patients operated on for meningioma of supratentorial location in 52 (23.9%), hemorrhage into the adrenal tissue was revealed. Clinical diagnosis of this pathology is difficult. Pathogenetically, hemorrhage into the adrenal tissue should be considered as manifestation of generalized vascular disorders in complicated postoperative course, which are associated with significant functional strain of the endocrine system resulting from stress reactions.

ABSTRACT

The dynamics of brain edema and swelling was studied according to the indices of separate impedancemetry in the early posttraumatic period in 36 patients with severe craniocerebral trauma. Swelling of the brain predominated on the 1st and 2nd days in most patients. Later, depending on the severity of the posttraumatic period, the swelling may grow or be replaced by edema with subsequent normalization. A parallelism was revealed between the severity of brain edema and swelling, the intracranial pressure value, and the severity of the patient's condition.

ABSTRACT

Data is reported in evidence of the possibility of using separate impedancemetry for intravital diagnosis of the degree of manifestation and the dynamics of development of brain edema and swelling. The specific features of the effect of mannite, furosemide, sorbitol, dexamethasone, and thiopental sodium on brain edema and swelling were studied in the clinic under control of impedancemetry in patients with craniocerebral trauma of various severity and edema and swelling of different degree of manifestation. Experimental study on a model of intracerebral hemorrhage showed that mannite, furosemide, and dexamethasone act on the dynamics of edema and swelling in phases.

ABSTRACT

Data on the application of neurospecific proteins S-100, GFAP, D2 glycoprotein and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in the differential tumor diagnosis are reviewed. S-100 protein and GFAP are found in well differentiated astroglial tumors. S-100 protein can be used as melanoma and Schwannoma specific marker. In malignant CNS tumors there is a decrease of S-100 protein content up to its complete disappearance, while the content of GFAP is variable. D2 glycoprotein is detected in gliomas and medulloblastomas, being absent in other brain tumors. NSE is invariably present in apudomas and was also found in the majority of investigated astrocytomas, ependymomas, glioblastomas and in some medulloblastomas.

ABSTRACT

The content of neurospecific proteins S-100, GFA and D2 was measured in malignant cerebral tumors by electrophoresis with the use of monospecific antisera. Concomitant measurement of proteins S-100 and GFA is a more reliable diagnostic criterion as to the tumor histogenesis than study of each protein alone. D2 protein appeared to be the most stable specific marker.

ABSTRACT

It has been discovered that nuclear membranes isolated from human brain tumors are capable of cyanide-sensitive oxidation of adrenaline to adrenochrome in the presence of both NAD X H and NADP X H while the process of oxidation is inhibited by superoxide dismutase. At the same time nuclear membranes isolated from the brain tissue do not oxidize adrenaline to adrenochrome in the presence of both substrates. A possible relationship between the properties of the nuclear membranes and the degree of tumor malignancy is discussed.

ABSTRACT

A rather distinct correlation in the content and distribution of DNA with the grade of malignancy was estabilished for the following series: normal astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes, typical astrocyfomas and oligodendrogliomas atypical astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas. For glioblastomas this correlation is impaired, because the polymorphic variant of glioblastoma is characterized by particularly great disturbances in the content and distribution of DNA in the form of polyploidy and aneuploidy which, in this case, reflects not only the grade of malignancy, but also a pronounced polymorphism of tumour cells. The content of DNA in rapidly growing malignant tumours is not only an expressions of real deviation to the side of polyploidy and the mitotic cycle. In neuroectodermal tumours growing in the condition of cell culture, the similar regularity was observed, although the phenomena of aneuploidy were more distinctly expressed in the majority of tumours.
