ABSTRACT

As part of the Dynamics-Aerosol-Chemistry-Cloud Interactions in West Africa (DACCIWA) project, extensive in-situ measurements of the southern West African atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) have been performed at three supersites Kumasi (Ghana), Savè (Benin) and Ile-Ife (Nigeria) during the 2016 monsoon period (June and July). The measurements were designed to provide data for advancing our understanding of the relevant processes governing the formation, persistence and dissolution of nocturnal low-level stratus clouds and their influence on the daytime ABL in southern West Africa. An extensive low-level cloud deck often forms during the night and persists long into the following day strongly influencing the ABL diurnal cycle. Although the clouds are of a high significance for the regional climate, the dearth of observations in this region has hindered process understanding. Here, an overview of the measurements ranging from near-surface observations, cloud characteristics, aerosol and precipitation to the dynamics and thermodynamics in the ABL and above, and data processing is given. So-far achieved scientific findings, based on the dataset analyses, are briefly overviewed.

ABSTRACT

The population of Hawai'i has traditionally been high in average fish consumption when compared to the national average. However, information is lacking on patterns of fish consumption among subpopulations. Data on fish consumption in the last 30 days from 11,293 adults was collected with the use of the Hawai'i Health Survey (an annual telephone survey of households and household members) during the years 2007 and 2008 and weighted to represent the adult population of Hawai'i. The US Department of Agriculture's, Environmental Protection Agency, and the United States Food and Drug Administration, recommend 8-12 ounces of fish per week for associated health benefits. Present estimates of fish consumption were skewed to the right (mean 10.5 and median 7.9 ounces) with some adults eating large amounts of fish per day and frequently. It may be of concern, given high amounts of methylmercury in select fish, that 13.7% of adults were eating fish 20 or more times per month. In addition, the serving size increased with increasing number of times per week fish was eaten. The subpopulation variables examined included age, sex, marital status, education, ethnicity, poverty, and demographics representing the adults of Hawai'i. The prevalence of adults consuming 8 or more ounces was highest for other than Honolulu counties, men, ages 18-74, married, with at least one year of college, Filipino and Native Hawaiian ethnicities (White, Japanese, Chinese, and All Others were also examined), employed, and adults living with higher income levels (lower poverty). However, only an estimated 46.9% of adults in Hawai'i were eating the eight or more ounces of fish weekly. Prevalence was lowest for women, Chinese, age >74 years, and the City and County of Honolulu. Adults who rated their general health better (excellent/good compared to fair/poor) were more likely to consume 8 or more ounces of fish per week, significantly for men. Men who rated their physical health higher and their mental health higher (via Optum SF™ Health Surveys) were associated with higher prevalence of consuming 8 or more ounces of fish per week. Higher consumption of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids associated with fish low in methylmercury needs to be encouraged for those not meeting the recommended ounces of fish per week, particularly women, Chinese, older age groups, and adults living below the poverty level.

ABSTRACT

Models and data from the North Pacific Ocean indicate that mercury concentrations in water and biota are increasing in response to (global or hemispheric) anthropogenic mercury releases. In the present study, we provide an updated record of mercury in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) caught near Hawaii that confirms an earlier conclusion that mercury concentrations in these fish are increasing at a rate similar to that observed in waters shallower than 1000 m. We also compiled and reanalyzed data from bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) caught near Hawaii in the 1970s and 2000s. Increases in mercury concentrations in bigeye tuna are consistent with the trend found in yellowfin tuna, in both timing and magnitude. The data available for blue marlin do not allow for a fair comparison among years, because mercury concentrations differ between sexes for this species, and sex was identified (or reported) in only 3 of 7 studies. Also, mercury concentrations in blue marlin may be insensitive to modest changes in mercury exposure, because this species appears to have the ability to detoxify mercury. The North Pacific Ocean is a region of both relatively high rates of atmospheric mercury deposition and capture fisheries production. Other data sets that allow temporal comparisons in mercury concentrations, such as pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) in Alaskan waters and albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) off the US Pacific coast, should be explored further, to aid in understanding human health and ecological risks and to develop additional baseline knowledge for assessing changes in a region expected to respond strongly to reductions in anthropogenic mercury emissions. ABSTRACT

Sphingosine 1-phosphate lyase (S1PL) has been characterized as a novel target for the treatment of autoimmune disorders using genetic and pharmacological methods. Medicinal chemistry efforts targeting S1PL by direct in vivo evaluation of synthetic analogues of 2-acetyl-4(5)-(1(R),2(S),3(R),4-tetrahydroxybutyl)-imidazole (THI, 1) led to the discovery of 2 (LX2931) and 4 (LX2932). The immunological phenotypes observed in S1PL deficient mice were recapitulated by oral administration of 2 or 4. Oral dosing of 2 or 4 yielded a dose-dependent decrease in circulating lymphocyte numbers in multiple species and showed a therapeutic effect in rodent models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Phase I clinical trials indicated that 2, the first clinically studied inhibitor of S1PL, produced a dose-dependent and reversible reduction of circulating lymphocytes and was well tolerated at dose levels of up to 180 mg daily. Phase II evaluation of 2 in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis is currently underway.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To determine the autonomic cardiovascular control among residents of Hawaii who are exposed to varying levels of volcanic air pollution (vog), which consists largely of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) and acid aerosols. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study between April 2006 and June 2008, the authors measured cardiovagal autonomic function by heart-rate variability (HRV) in 72 healthy individuals who lived in four exposure zones on Hawaii Island: vog-free (n=18); episodic exposure to SO(2) >200 ppb and acid aerosol (n=19); chronic exposure to SO(2) ≥30 ppb and acid aerosol (n=15); and chronic exposure to acid aerosols (n=20). Individuals with diabetes or heart disease, or who had smoked in the preceding month were excluded. HRV was measured in all subjects during rest, paced breathing and active standing (Ewing manoeuvre). HRV was analysed in time and frequency domains and compared between the four exposure zones. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between exposure zones in HRV, in either time or frequency domains, even after adjustment for age, gender, ethnicity and body mass index. There was no significant HRV change in three individuals in whom HRV was measured before and during an exposure to combined SO(2) 100-250 ppb and concentration of respirable particles of diameter ≥2.5 µ (PM(2.5)) >500 µg/m(3). Age was significantly correlated with time-domain parameters during paced breathing and the Ewing manoeuvre. CONCLUSIONS: This study of healthy individuals found no appreciable effects of vog on the autonomic nervous system.

ABSTRACT

We speciated arsenic compounds in marine fish and shellfish from two islands of the United States Territory of American Samoa in the South Pacific, and found that inorganic arsenic occurred as a minor fraction. The proportion of inorganic arsenic was generally far below the levels of prevailing assumptions typically used in human health risk assessments when only total arsenic is analysed. Fish and shellfish were collected from Tutuila and Ofu between May 2001 and March 2002 (n=383 individual specimens, with 117 composites); sites were selected based on habitat type and were representative of those frequented by local fishers. These islands have moderately developed reef fish fisheries among artisanal fishers, are far removed from any industrial or mining sources of arsenic, and presented an opportunity to study arsenic variations in marine biota from un-impacted environments. Target species were from various trophic levels and are among those frequently harvested for human consumption. We found evidence that arsenic concentrated in some marine species, but did not tend to follow classic trophic patterns for biomagnification or bioaccumulation. For the majority of samples, inorganic arsenic was less than 0.5% of total arsenic, with only a few samples in the range of 1-5%, the latter being mollusks which are recognized to have unusually high arsenic levels in general. This work supports the importance of speciation analysis for arsenic, because of the ubiquitous occurrence of arsenic in the environment, and its variable toxicity depending on chemical form.

ABSTRACT

Given the high incidence of brain injury in the population, brain damage rehabilitation is still a relatively undeveloped field. Virtual reality (VR) has the potential to assist current rehabilitation techniques in addressing the impairments, disabilities, and handicaps associated with brain damage. The main focus of much of the exploratory research performed to date has been to investigate the use of VR in the assessment of cognitive abilities, but there is now a trend for more studies to encompass rehabilitation training strategies. This review describes studies that have used VR in the assessment and rehabilitation of specific disabilities resulting from brain injury, including executive dysfunction, memory impairments, spatial ability impairments, attention deficits, and unilateral visual neglect. In addition, it describes studies that have used VR to try to offset some of the handicaps that people experience after brain injury. Finally, a table is included which, although not an exhaustive list of everything that has been published, includes many more studies that are relevant to the use of VR in the assessment and rehabilitation of brain damage. The review concludes that the use of VR in brain damage rehabilitation is expanding dramatically and will become an integral part of cognitive assessment and rehabilitation in the future.

ABSTRACT

Hippocampal activation was investigated, comparing allocentric and egocentric spatial memory. Healthy participants were immersed in a virtual reality circular arena, with pattern-rendered walls. In a viewpoint-independent task, they moved toward a pole, which was then removed. They were relocated to another position and had to move to the prior location of the pole. For viewpoint-dependent memory, the participants were not moved to a new starting point, but the patterns were rotated to prevent them from indicating the final position. Hippocampal and parahippocampal activation were found in the viewpoint-independent memory encoding phase. Viewpoint-dependent memory did not result in such activation. These results suggest differential activation of the hippocampal formation during allocentric encoding, in partial support of the spatial mapping hypothesis as applied to humans.

ABSTRACT

The aims of this analysis are to characterize the incidence and types of malignancies and tumor-specific mortality in our institution. Retransplantation, rejection episodes, and OKT3 use were evaluated. Our single-institution prospective database of 1,570 liver transplantations in 1,421 patients was analyzed. Data were statistically analyzed regarding sex, age at transplantation, time from transplantation to diagnosis of tumor, tumor type, and follow-up time. One hundred twenty-five patients (8.8%) developed de novo tumors; 69 patients were men, 56 patients were women. Seventeen patients received more than one allograft. De novo tumors were as follows: skin, 41; lymphomas, 35; lung, 11; colon, 6; anal, 2; rectal, 1; breast, 7; thyroid, 3; oropharyngeal squamous cell, 3; metastatic without primary tumor identified, 4; renal cell, 3; Kaposi's sarcoma, 1; angiosarcoma, 1; uterine, 1; ovarian, 1; pituitary, 1; pancreatic, 2; cholangiocarcinoma, 1; and esophageal, 1. These tumors developed in a statistically significant chronological sequence. Lung cancers and lymphomas showed shorter mean survival times, as well as greater mortality. OKT3 use and rejection did not show significance in tumor development. De novo tumors post-liver transplantation affected our population in a distribution similar to that of the general non-transplantation population. Intense short courses of immunosuppression for rejection were not as important as chronic immunosuppression in the development of tumors. The risk for development was not enough to preclude transplantation. We found that tumors developed in chronological fashion. Therefore, directed surveillance, patient education, and early detection may facilitate earlier treatment.

The behavior and emotional adjustment of latency-age children following the sudden death of their teacher are described. Observational and interview data demonstrate the importance of play and ritual as coping mechanisms. The children's reactions to a replacement teacher, and to expectations that they establish a relationship with the new teacher, are considered.
