ABSTRACT

This is the first large-scale, quantitative study of the evaluative dimensions and potential predictors of Quebec-based parents' attitudes towards childhood multilingualism. Such attitudes are assumed to constitute a determinant of parental language choices, and thereby influence children's multilingual development. The newly-developed Attitudes towards Childhood Multilingualism Questionnaire was used to gather data from 825 participants raising an infant/toddler aged 0-4 years with multiple languages in the home. The results revealed three separate dimensions: status and solidarity (the same dimensions found in attitudes towards individual languages) as well as cognitive development (not previously attested as a separate dimension). Participants' approach to promoting multilingualism (specifically, whether they used the one-person-one-language-approach) and the combination of languages transmitted (specifically, whether this included a heritage language) correlated significantly with parental attitudes towards childhood multilingualism. Parents' linguistic background and location within Quebec were not significant predictors of attitudes. The paper discusses implications and directions for further research.

ABSTRACT

A method is proposed to estimate the lateral resolution of surface potential profile measurements using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) on operating electronic devices. De-embedding the measured profile from the system response is required for various applications, such as contact characterization of thin-film transistors, or local longitudinal electric field measurements. A method is developed based on the measurement of the electric potential profile of two metallic electrodes separated by a nano-gap, providing a quasi-planar configuration. The electrodes are independently biased so as to produce an abrupt and well-controlled potential step. This calibration sample is used to measure the system impulse response in various configurations. Due to the application constrains, the KPFM method employed here is based on a dual-pass mode, demonstrated to provide reliable measurements on operating electronic devices. The method is applied to two types of conductive AFM probes. Measurements are performed at different tip-to-sample heights allowing the determination of the lateral resolution of the double-pass method. Detailed description of the measurements and resolution results are given for the present KPFM configuration. The system resolution measurement technique can be extended to other KPFM modes and can be used to monitor the degradation of the tip quality during long measurement campaigns. Finally, the method is applied to the characterization of thin-film transistors, and the effects of contact edge sharpness on the device behavior is discussed. The longitudinal electric field responsible for charge injection at the source-contact edge is successfully estimated and compared for organic thin-film transistors fabricated by stencil lithography or electron-beam lithography.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: High-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) reactivity was proposed as a vulnerability factor for stress-induced sleep disturbances. Its effect may be amplified among individuals with high trait worry or sleep reactivity. PURPOSE: This study evaluated whether HF-HRV reactivity to a worry induction, sleep reactivity, and trait worry predict increases in sleep disturbances in response to academic stress, a naturalistic stressor. METHOD: A longitudinal study following 102 undergraduate students during an academic semester with well-defined periods of lower and higher academic stress was conducted. HF-HRV reactivity to a worry induction, trait worry using the Penn State Worry Questionnaire, and sleep reactivity using the Ford Insomnia Stress Reactivity Test were measured during the low stress period. Sleep disturbances using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were assessed twice during the lower stress period and three times during the higher stress period. RESULTS: Greater reductions in HF-HRV in response to the worry induction predicted increases in sleep disturbances from the lower to the higher academic stress period. Trait worry moderated this association: individuals with both higher trait worry and greater HF-HRV reactivity to worry had larger increases in stress-related sleep disturbances over time, compared to participants with lower trait worry and HF-HRV reactivity. A similar, but marginally significant effect was found for sleep reactivity. CONCLUSION: This study supports the role of HF-HRV reactivity as a vulnerability factor for stress-induced sleep disturbances. The combination of high trait worry and high HF-HRV reactivity to worry might identify a subgroup of individuals most vulnerable to stress-related sleep disturbances.
