ABSTRACT

Introduction: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals face disproportionate barriers to accessing affirming healthcare, ranging from individual practitioners' biases to financial constraints and societal-level cisnormativity. Method: This study identified suggestions for improving healthcare from 420 TGD individuals in the United States. Participants responded to an open-ended question about their suggestions for improving healthcare for TGD people. These responses were then coded using thematic analysis, resulting in 22 specific codes under 6 themes. Results: Results indicated a need for eliminating cisnormativity, taking a holistic approach with clients, adjusting conceptual frameworks for care, eliminating accessibility barriers, promoting affirmative interactions with TGD clients, and providing TGD-affirmative training for providers. Notably, these suggestions spanned from the broader, cultural level regarding general understandings of TGD people and gender to micro-level interactions. Conclusions: This study provides important tools for improving TGD care via a reduction of barriers and an increase in competency and affirmation.

ABSTRACT

The transient receptor potential cation channel 2 (TRPC2) conveys pheromonal information from the vomeronasal organ (VNO) to the brain. Both male and female mice lacking this gene show altered sex-typical behavior as adults. We asked whether TRPC2, highly expressed in the VNO, normally participates in the development of VNO-recipient brain regions controlling mounting and aggression, two behaviors affected by TRPC2 loss. We now report significant effects of TRPC2 loss in both the posterodorsal aspect of the medial amygdala (MePD) and ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) of male and female mice. In the MePD, a sex difference in neuron number was eliminated by the TRPC2 knockout (KO), but the effect was complex, with fewer neurons in the right MePD of females, and fewer neurons in the left MePD of males. In contrast, MePD astrocytes were unaffected by the KO. In the ventrolateral (vl) aspect of the VMH, KO females were like wildtype (WT) females, but TRPC2 loss had a dramatic effect in males, with fewer neurons than WT males and a smaller VMHvl overall. We also discovered a glial sex difference in VMHvl of WTs, with females having more astrocytes than males. Interestingly, TRPC2 loss increased astrocyte number in males in this region. We conclude that TRPC2 normally participates in the sexual differentiation of the mouse MePD and VMHvl. These changes in two key VNO-recipient regions may underlie the effects of the TRPC2 KO on behavior.

ABSTRACT

Background: The repeated act of heading has been implicated in the link between football participation and risk of neurodegenerative disease, and acutely alters cerebrovascular outcomes in men. This study assessed whether exposure to a realistic number of headers acutely influences indices of cerebral blood flow regulation in female footballers. Methods: Nineteen female players completed a heading trial and seated control trial on two separate days. The heading trial involved six headers in 1 h (one every 10 min), with the ball traveling at 40 ± 5 km/h. Cerebrovascular reactivity to hypercapnia and hypocapnia was determined using serial breath holding and hyperventilation attempts. Dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) was assessed by scrutinizing the relationship between cerebral blood flow and mean arterial blood pressure during 5 min of squat stand maneuvers at 0.05 Hz. Neurovascular coupling (NVC) was quantified as the posterior cerebral artery blood velocity response to a visual search task. These outcomes were assessed before and 1 h after the heading or control trial. Results: No significant time by trial interaction was present for the hypercapnic (P = 0.48, η p 2 = 0.05) and hypocapnic (P = 0.47, η p 2 = 0.06) challenge. Similarly, no significant interaction effect was present for any metric of dCA (P > 0.12, η p 2 < 0.16 for all) or NVC (P > 0.14, η p 2 < 0.15 for all). Conclusion: The cerebral blood flow response to changes in carbon dioxide, blood pressure and a visual search task were not altered following six headers in female footballers. Further study is needed to observe whether changes are apparent after more prolonged exposure.

ABSTRACT

The mammographic and sonographic appearance of angiolipomas of the breast is presented. This rare benign variant of lipoma usually presents as a painless breast mass. The imaging characteristics of angiolipomas of the breast are variable, overlapping with both other benign breast neoplasms and with malignancies. The most common mammographic appearance of angiolipomas of the breast in this series was an oval or round, isodense, circumscribed mass. The most common sonographic features were oval shape, circumscribed borders, and iso- to slight hyperechogenicity. These imaging features are nonspecific and biopsy is required for definitive diagnosis.
