ABSTRACT

Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We analyzed 17 Ryugu samples measuring 1 to 8 millimeters. Carbon dioxide-bearing water inclusions are present within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu's parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials that formed at high temperatures, such as chondrules and calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions. The samples are rich in phyllosilicates and carbonates, which formed through aqueous alteration reactions at low temperature, high pH, and water/rock ratios of <1 (by mass). Less altered fragments contain olivine, pyroxene, amorphous silicates, calcite, and phosphide. Numerical simulations, based on the mineralogical and physical properties of the samples, indicate that Ryugu's parent body formed ~2 million years after the beginning of Solar System formation.

ABSTRACT

Understanding the true nature of extra-terrestrial water and organic matter that were present at the birth of our solar system, and their subsequent evolution, necessitates the study of pristine astromaterials. In this study, we have studied both the water and organic contents from a dust particle recovered from the surface of near-Earth asteroid 25143 Itokawa by the Hayabusa mission, which was the first mission that brought pristine asteroidal materials to Earth's astromaterial collection. The organic matter is presented as both nanocrystalline graphite and disordered polyaromatic carbon with high D/H and 15N/14N ratios (δD = + 4868 ± 2288‰; δ15N = + 344 ± 20‰) signifying an explicit extra-terrestrial origin. The contrasting organic feature (graphitic and disordered) substantiates the rubble-pile asteroid model of Itokawa, and offers support for material mixing in the asteroid belt that occurred in scales from small dust infall to catastrophic impacts of large asteroidal parent bodies. Our analysis of Itokawa water indicates that the asteroid has incorporated D-poor water ice at the abundance on par with inner solar system bodies. The asteroid was metamorphosed and dehydrated on the formerly large asteroid, and was subsequently evolved via late-stage hydration, modified by D-enriched exogenous organics and water derived from a carbonaceous parent body.

ABSTRACT

The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of the Hayabusa2 sample-return mission, is thought to be a primitive carbonaceous object. We report reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface acquired with the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2, to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micrometers was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, which is consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

ABSTRACT

The quantitative estimation of amikacin (AMK) in AMK sulfate injection samples is reported using FTIR-derivative spectrometric method in a continuous flow system. Fourier transform of mid-IR spectra were recorded without any sample pretreatment. A good linear calibration (r40.999, %RSDo 2.0) in the range of 7.7-77.0 mg/mL was found. The results showed a good correlation with the manufacturer's and overall they all fell within acceptable limits of most pharmacopoeial monographs on AMK sulfate.

ABSTRACT

The immune response against hepatitis C virus (HCV) is rarely effective at clearing the virus, resulting in approximately 170 million chronic HCV infections worldwide. Here we report that ligation of an HCV receptor (CD81) inhibits natural killer (NK) cells. Cross-linking of CD81 by the major envelope protein of HCV (HCV-E2) or anti-CD81 antibodies blocks NK cell activation, cytokine production, cytotoxic granule release, and proliferation. This inhibitory effect was observed using both activated and resting NK cells. Conversely, on NK-like T cell clones, including those expressing NK cell inhibitory receptors, CD81 ligation delivered a costimulatory signal. Engagement of CD81 on NK cells blocks tyrosine phosphorylation through a mechanism which is distinct from the negative signaling pathways associated with NK cell inhibitory receptors for major histocompatibility complex class I. These results implicate HCV-E2-mediated inhibition of NK cells as an efficient HCV evasion strategy targeting the early antiviral activities of NK cells and allowing the virus to establish itself as a chronic infection.

ABSTRACT

To study the health effects of high dietary maternal selenium intake breast milk, blood and toe-nails were collected from 143 women (20-24 days of lactation) living in Venezuelan states of Yaracuy and Portuguesa. Depending on the regional selenium intake level three regions were defined within the total range of 90-980 microgram per day. The samples were analyzed by means of INAA for the determination of trace elements, including selenium and zinc. The significant inverse correlation between Se and Zn in breast milk found in former studies was confirmed. Investigation of the Zn-binding pattern in milk whey was carried out by an on-line combination HPLC (SEC) for protein separation and ICP-AES for element detection. Six Zn-binding compounds including citrate were detected. A highly significant negative correlation was found between the citrate, which is the main low-molecular Zn-binding compound, and the maternal daily selenium intake. We determined that the decrease in zinc concentration is due to a decrease in the citrate level, which depends on the selenium concentration in breast milk. The selenium concentration in breast milk is, in turn, proportional to the dietary intake. In addition, significant changes in the UV- and Zn-profiles were observed in the milk whey with the highest selenium content, indicating that above a certain maternal intake level substantial changes in the composition of mammary secretory cells occur. This effect can be of interest for estimation of the safe dietary intake level of selenium.

ABSTRACT

The levels of DDT residues were studied in 145 breast milk samples 25 days postpartum from women living in various rural populations where DDT has been used in farming activities and to interrupt malaria transmission. All participants showed quantifiable milk levels of DDT residues in the range from 5.1 to 68.3 micrograms/l and their levels significantly increased (P < 0.05) with maternal age. The determination of DDT residues (as DDE) in human milk was performed after a saponification process by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. Confirmatory analysis was achieved using high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detection.

ABSTRACT

A patient who developed valproate-associated hepatotoxicity had significantly lower serum levels of total protein, albumin and selenium than the controls. This study shows that with the beginning of the hepatic coma metallothionein (MT) appeared in the serum mainly in the form of Zn-thionein, which altered the Zn distribution pattern of the serum in a characteristic manner. HPLC-ICP3 was successfully applied to the simultaneous speciation of elements and characterization of MT by the use of one gel permeation column.

ABSTRACT

In a pilot study aimed to test the therapeutic potential of beta interferon (IFN) given intramuscularly we treated 4 patients with HBeAg positive chronic hepatitis B with a progressively increased dosage of beta IFN (from 5 to 9 million units daily) for 1 month and with 9 million units for 5 additional months, thrice weekly. In 3 of the 4 patients, serum HBV-DNA decreased during therapy and remained undetectable in 2 who seroconverted from HBeAg to anti-HBe while in 1 patient viraemia rebounded to pretreatment levels during the follow-up. In the remaining patient serum HBV-DNA fluctuated during treatment. These results suggest that beta IFN given intramuscularly has a potential therapeutic efficacy in patients with chronic hepatitis B and prompt further clinical trials in a larger number of patients.
