ABSTRACT
This paper describes the data communication network installed in four hospitals in the Hammersmith and Queeen Charlotte's Special Health Authority to support several hundred microcomputers, terminals and printers and several host systems, including the integrated computerized hospital information system which is currently under development. Broadband local area network and wide area network technologies have been employed to provide a flexible system, which is capable of being expanded to meet the increasing demand for data communications within the authority. The broadband networks are the first such installations in a health authority in Britain.

In studies with gated nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, patients with recent transmural myocardial infarction showed significantly longer spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) in the infarct area than did healthy volunteers or patients with non-ischaemic or chronic ischaemic heart disease. 10 of the 13 patients had a T1 longer than that found in any healthy subject or in any patient with other heart disease. Changes in T1 should prove useful in the assessment of interventions designed to limit infarct size.

A technique is described for visualising coronary artery blood flow and assessing myocardial perfusion during aorta to coronary artery bypass surgery. The technique involves an injection of cold fluid into the graft which is then viewed thermographically using an infra-red camera.
