ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Monitoring technical performance during a soccer match has become an indispensable practice, since the players perform different functions within the tactical system adopted by the team, resulting in specific technical actions that are fully responsive to the individual technical level of each player. Thus, current study aimed to investigate the possible direct and mediating relationship between salivary testosterone and the technical performance of semi-professional footballers during a training game. METHODS: To characterize the sample, the anthropometric profile, body composition, biological maturation, lower limb power, speed, estimation of maximum oxygen consumption, and physical performance were used. To determine testosterone concentrations, saliva was collected before and after the training game, for subsequent measurement using enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) and Salimetrics Kits. For quantification of technical performance and participation with the ball during the training game, scout software was used from the footage of the training game. The reliability of the technical performance analyses was determined through the repetition test of two attempts (Cohen's Kappa agreement index). RESULTS: The direct relationship between postgame testosterone and total participation with the ball in the second half; the direct relationship between the percentage of lean mass with postgame testosterone and an apparent relationship between percentage of lean mass and total participation with the ball from the set of relations mediated by postgame testosterone concentrations. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that testosterone concentrations combined with high levels of lean mass may have an important role in the technical performance and participation with the ball of semi-professional footballers.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze the effects of dance practice on body composition, metabolic profile, functional fitness, and self-image/self-esteem in postmenopausal women. METHODS: A total of 36 postmenopausal participants (mean age 57 years) danced three times per week for 90 minutes each day and were evaluated before and after 16 weeks. The parameters evaluated were body composition (body fat and lean mass), blood lipids, functional fitness, self-image, and self-esteem. RESULTS: Statistical analysis was done using Student t test for paired samples and the Wilcoxon test with P values less than 0.05 considered statistically significant. Lower triglycerides (baseline = 156.5 ±â€Š17.0 mg/dL; after 16-weeks = 131.5 ±â€Š12.9 mg/dL; P < 0.01), higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (baseline = 55.4 ±â€Š15.9 mg/dL; after 16 weeks = 60.0 ±â€Š15.4 mg/dL; P < 0.001), and higher total cholesterol (baseline = 199.5 ±â€Š26.8 mg/dL; after 16 weeks = 211.8 ±â€Š35.7 mg/dL; P < 0.01) levels were observed in postmenopausal women. Dance intervention improved coordination (baseline = 8.6 ±â€Š2.6; after 16 weeks = 6.7 ±â€Š1.6; P < 0.001), agility (baseline = 55.9 ±â€Š8.8; after 16 weeks = 64.1 ±â€Š8.3; P < 0.001), and aerobic capability (baseline = 446.8 ±â€Š63.4; after 16 weeks = 377.4 ±â€Š53.8; P < 0.001). Classification of general function fitness index (GFFI) was considered regular at baseline (GFFI of 200-299), but improved after 16 weeks of dance practice (GFFI of 300-399, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The 16-week dance intervention was effective in improving not only the lipid profile and functional fitness of postmenopausal women, but also self-image and self-esteem.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the individual characteristics of body composition and metabolic profile that could explain interindividual variation in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) concentrations in response to 16 weeks of combined strength plus aerobic (combined) training in postmenopausal women. The participants were divided into tertiles based on percentage of changes in HDL-c concentrations after combined training. Only women in the upper tertile (positive responders: Δ > 10.4%; n = 19) and lower tertile (negative responders: Δ < -1.4%; n = 19) were considered for analyses. The total body fat (BF), trunk fat (TF), android fat (AF), gynoid fat, and lean body mass were estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The metabolic profile - glucose, triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, HDL-c, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) - were assessed. After 16 weeks, both positive and negative responders presented similar improvement in body composition, such as a decrease in percentage and kilograms of BF, TF, and AF, and increase in lean body mass (p value for time < 0.05). As expected, there was an effect of time and also a significant interaction (time vs. group) (p value < 0.001) in the improvement of HDL-c, with higher values for positive responders. Regarding metabolic profile, there were significant interactions (time vs. group) for triacylglycerol (p value = 0.032) and VLDL (p value = 0.027) concentrations, with lower values for positive responders. Our results suggests there is heterogeneity in combined training-induced HDL-c changes in postmenopausal women, and the positive responders were those who presented more pronounced decreases in triacylglycerol and VLDL concentrations.

Rossi, FE, Diniz, TA, Fortaleza, ACS, Neves, LM, Picolo, MR, Monteiro, PA, Buonani, C, Lira, FS, and Freitas, IF Jr. Concurrent training promoted sustained anti-atherogenic benefits in the fasting plasma triacylglycerolemia of postmenopausal women at 1-year follow-up. J Strength Cond Res 32(12): 3573-3582, 2018-The aim of this study was to compare the effects of aerobic and concurrent training (aerobic plus strength training) on the lipid profiles of normotriacylglycerolemic and hypertriacylglycerolemic postmenopausal women and to verify whether the benefits of aerobic and concurrent training were sustained after 1 year. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triacylglycerol (TAG), and glucose were assessed in 46 normotriacylglycerolemic (TAG < 150 mg·dl) postmenopausal women divided into 3 groups: aerobic training, concurrent training (CT), and a control group. For CT group, hypertriacylglycerolemic postmenopausal women were recruited (TAG ≥ 150 mg·dl, n = 14). Total daily caloric consumption and free-living physical activity were evaluated by dietary questionnaires and accelerometer, respectively, and fat mass by DXA. In 16 weeks, CT was effective in increasing HDL-c (normotriacylglycerolemic: pre = 57.1 ± 17.3 mg·dl × post = 64.3 ± 16.1 mg·dl p = 0.020 and hypertriacylglycerolemic: pre = 44.7 ± 9.6 mg·dl × post = 50.3 ± 15.3 mg·dl; p = 0.012) and reducing the atherogenic index in normotriacylglycerolemic (pre = 3.6 ± 0.9 mg·dl × post = 3.0 ± 0.6 mg·dl; p = 0.003) and hypertriacylglycerolemic (pre = 5.2 ± 1.1 mg·dl × post = 4.7 ± 1.2 mg·dl; p = 0.018) postmenopausal women. In addition, the effects were sustained at the 1-year follow-up only among the hypertriacylglycerolemic postmenopausal women. The anti-atherogenic status in normotriacylglycerolemic and hypertriacylglycerolemic postmenopausal women was changed by CT but without significant differences between groups. Furthermore, these benefits are sustained at the 1-year follow-up among the hypertriacylglycerolemic subjects.

ABSTRACT

RESUMO O período da pós-menopausa é caracterizado por 12 meses consecutivos de amenorreia. Além de afetar o sistema reprodutivo e a produção de hormônios sexuais, principalmente o estrógeno, essas mulheres apresentam aumento da gordura corporal total, principalmente na região central, o que está relacionado com o desenvolvimento de diversas doenças crônicas, como dislipidemia, aterosclerose e resistência à insulina. Dessa forma, diferentes programas de exercício físico, aeróbico, resistido ou combinado (aeróbico e resistido em uma mesma sessão) podem ser uma forma interessante de tratamento não farmacológico para a prevenção e melhora dos desfechos. Entretanto, as adaptações promovidas pelos diferentes programas de exercício sobre a composição corporal, perfil lipídico e glicêmico não estão claras na literatura e precisam ser elucidadas. Assim sendo, esta revisão tem como objetivo discutir as diferentes adaptações do treinamento aeróbico, resistido e combinado na composição corporal, perfil lipídico e glicêmico de mulheres na pós-menopausa.


ABSTRACT The postmenopausal period is characterized by 12 consecutive months of amenorrhea. In addition to affecting the reproductive system and the production of sex hormones, mainly estrogen, these women present an increase in total body fat especially in the central region, which is related to the development of several chronic diseases such as dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and insulin resistance. Therefore, different programs of physical exercise, aerobic or resistance or combined (aerobic and resistance in the same session) may be an interesting form of non-pharmacological treatment for the prevention and improvement of outcomes. However, the adaptations promoted by the different exercise programs on the body composition, lipid and glycemic profiles are not clear in the literature and need to be elucidated. Hence, this review aims to discuss the different adaptations of aerobic, resistance and combined training in body composition, lipid, and glycemic profile of postmenopausal women.


RESUMEN El período de posmenopáusico se caracteriza por 12 meses consecutivos de amenorrea. Además de afectar el sistema reproductivo y la producción de hormonas sexuales, principalmente el estrógeno, estas mujeres tienen aumento de grasa corporal total, particularmente en la región central, lo que está relacionado con el desarrollo de diversas enfermedades crónicas, como dislipidemia, aterosclerosis y resistencia a la insulina. Por lo tanto, diferentes programas de ejercicio físico, aeróbico, de resistencia o combinado (aeróbico y de resistencia en una misma sesión) pueden ser una manera interesante de tratamiento no farmacológico para la prevención y mejora de los resultados. Sin embargo, las adaptaciones promovidas por los diferentes programas de ejercicios sobre la composición corporal, perfil de lípidos y glucémico no están claras en la literatura y necesitan ser elucidadas. De esta manera, esta revisión tiene como objetivo discutir las diferentes adaptaciones de entrenamiento aeróbico, de resistencia y combinado en la composición corporal, perfil lipídico y glucémico de mujeres en la posmenopausia.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of combined (CT; strength plus aerobic) and functional training (FT) on the body composition and metabolic profile with a similar training load in postmenopausal women. The participants were divided into three groups: CT (n=20), FT (n=17), and control group (CG, n=15). The trunk FM, fat mass (FM), percentage of FM (FM%), and fat-free mass were estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The metabolic profile, glucose, triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) were assessed. There were main effects of time in trunk fat, FM, and FM% (P<0.05). There were statistically significant interaction for FM (P=0.015), FM% (P=0.017) with lower values for CT group. For LDL-c, there was significant interaction (P=0.002) with greater values for FT group in relation to CG and CT. Furthermore, when performed the post hoc test on the "mean absolute differences" (Δ), it can observed statistically significant difference between FT, CT, and CG (-13.0±16.5 mg/dL vs. 4.8±18.4 mg/dL vs. 9.2±18.8 mg/dL, P<0.05). In conclusion, when training loads are equivalent CT potentiated a reduction in FM and FM%, however, only FT reduced LDL-c in postmenopausal women.

Abstract Different types of physical activity programs have been used with the purpose of improving body composition and increasing resting energy expenditure (REE) in obese adolescents. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of two training models on REE and body composition in this population. The study included 20 obese male adolescents, who were randomly assigned to follow two training models: strength training (n=8, age=13,4±1.0) and functional training (n=12, age= 13.0±1.1). Body composition variables were estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. REE was assessed by indirect calorimetry using the QUARK-PFT equipment (COSMED, Rome, Italy). The training protocol consisted of 30 minutes of aerobic training followed by 30 minutes of strength training (ST) or functional training (FT), both with a duration of 20 weeks. There were no significant differences between the two training models with regard to body composition (fat mass, FT= -7.6±5.5% vs. ST= -8.9±6.2%; p=0.620), (lean body mass, FT= 9.0±5.3% vs. ST= 6.8±6.7%; p=0.431) and to REE (FT= 19.6±15.3% vs. ST= 10.7±24.5%; p=0.331). Moreover, lean body mass (p=0.01) and fat mass (0.01) had an influence on REE. No differences were observed between the two training models, but both were effective in improving body composition and increasing REE in obese adolescents. Furthermore, the present study showed the importance of systematic physical training, since lean body mass and fat mass contributed to the increase in REE after the training period.


Resumo Diferentes tipos de programas de exercícios físicos têm sido utilizados na tentativa de melhorar a composição corporal e aumentar o gasto energético de repouso (GER) de adolescentes obesos. O objetivo foi comparar os efeitos de dois modelos de treinamento sobre o gasto energético de repouso e a composição corporal de adolescentes com obesidade. Participaram do estudo vinte adolescentes obesos do sexo masculino, foram divididos de forma aleatória em dois modelos de treinamento: treinamento contra resistência (n=8, idade=13,4±1,0) e treinamento funcional (n=12, idade= 13,0±1,1). As variáveis de composição corporal foram estimadas pela densitometria radiológica de dupla energia. O GER foi realizado por meio da calorimetria indireta usando o equipamento QUARK-PFT (COSMED, Roma, Itália). O protocolo de treinamento consistiu de 30 minutos de treino aeróbio seguidos de 30 minutos de treino contra resistência (TC) ou funcional (TF), ambos durante 20 semanas. Não houve diferenças significantes entre os dois modelos de treinamento na composição corporal (massa gorda, TF= -7,6±5,5% x TC= -8,9±6,2%; p=0,620), (massa corporal magra, TF= 9,0±5,3% x TC= 6,8±6,7%; p=0,431) e no GER (TF= 19,6±15,3% x TC= 10,7±24,5%; p=0,331). Além disso, a massa corporal magra (p=0,01) e massa gorda (p=0,01) influenciam o GER. Não há diferença entre os dois modelos de treinamento, porém ambos são eficazes na redução da composição corporal e aumento do GER de adolescentes obesos. Adicionalmente, foi verificada a importância do treinamento físico sistematizado, uma vez que a massa corporal magra e massa gorda contribuíram para o aumento do GER após o treinamento.

Abstract The aim of this study was to propose the normative table for the non-active postmenopausal Brazilian population composed of women aged 50-69 years through the AAHPERD functional fitness test battery. This is a cross-sectional study with 170 postmenopausal women (FSH dose> 26.72 mIU / L). The population was divided into two groups: 50-59 years (n = 97) and 60-69 years (n = 73). The inclusion criteria were not having participated of systematic motor intervention in the six months prior to the study period; not presenting motor or cognitive impairments that could impair the performance of evaluation protocols and absence of comorbidities that could prevent or limit evaluations. The group aged 50-59 years showed mean values of 55.6 ± 2.9 years for age, 54.0 ± 21.1 mIU / ml for FSH, 11.3 ± 1.8 seconds for coordination 20.2 ± 4.0 repetitions for strength, 51.9 ± 11.8 cm for flexibility, 23.0 ± 2.4 seconds for speed and 497 ± 39 seconds for aerobic resistance. The group aged 60-69 years showed mean values of 64.2 ± 2.8 years of age, 54.9 ± 16.1 mIU / ml for FSH, 11.5 ± 2.5 seconds for coordination, 20.2 ± 4.3 repetitions for strength, 54.4 ± 10.9 cm for flexibility, 24.5 ± 4.0 seconds for speed and 507 ± 47 seconds for aerobic resistance. The proposal of a normative table was made possible with the data analyzed, which is a new reference regarding functional fitness studies especially in physically inactive postmenopausal women.


Resumo Objetivou-se propor a tabela normativa para a população brasileira de mulheres não ativas na pós-menopausa entre 50 e 69 anos por meio da bateria de teste de aptidão funcional da AAHPERD. Estudo de característica transversal, com 170 mulheres na pós-menopausa (dosagem de FSH>26,72 mIU/L). A população foi dividida em dois grupos: 50 a 59 anos (n=97) e de 60 a 69 anos (n=73). Os critérios de inclusão foram não participar de intervenção motora sistematizada nos seis meses anteriores ao período do estudo; não apresentar comprometimentos motores ou cognitivos que inviabilizassem a realização dos protocolos de avaliação, não apresentar comorbidade que pudessem impedir ou limitar a realização das avaliações. O grupo 50 a 59 anos apresentou valores médios de 55,6 ± 2,9 anos de idade, 54,0 ± 21,1 mUI/ ml para FSH, 11,3 ± 1,8 segundos para coordenação, 20,2 ± 4,0 repetições para força, 51,9 ± 11,8 centímetros para flexibilidade, 23,0 ± 2,4 segundos para agilidade e 497 ± 39 segundos para resistência aeróbia. O grupo de 60 a 69 anos apresentou média de 64,2 ± 2,8 anos de idade, 54,9 ± 16,1 mUI/ml para o FSH, 11,5 ± 2,5 segundos para coordenação, 20,2 ± 4,3 repetições para força, 54,4 ± 10,9 centímetros para flexibilidade, 24,5 ± 4,0 segundos para agilidade e 507 ± 47 segundos para resistência aeróbia. A proposta de apresentar uma tabela normativa foi possível com os dados analisados, sendo essa uma nova referência em relação a estudos de aptidão funcional especialmente em mulheres fisicamente inativas na pós-menopausa.

The aim of this study was to verify the effects of aerobic and combined training on the body composition and lipid profile of obese postmenopausal women and to analyze which of these models is more effective after equalizing the training load. Sixty-five postmenopausal women (age = 61.0 ± 6.3 years) were divided into 3 groups: aerobic training (AT, n = 15), combined training (CT [strength + aerobic], n = 32), and control group (CG, n = 18). Their body composition upper body fat (TF), fat mass (FM), percentage of FM, and fat-free mass (FFM) were estimated by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The lipid profile, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were assessed. There was a statistically significant difference in the TF (AT = -4.4%, CT = -4.4%, and CG = 1.0%, p = 0.001) and FFM (AT = 1.7%, CT = 2.6%, and CG = -1.4%, p = 0.0001) between the experimental and the control groups. Regarding the percentage of body fat, there was a statistically significant difference only between the CT and CG groups (AT = -2.8%, CT = -3.9%, and CG = 0.31%; p = 0.004). When training loads were equalized, the aerobic and combined training decreased core fat and increased FFM, but only the combined training potentiated a reduction in percentage of body fat in obese postmenopausal women after the training program. High-density lipoprotein-c levels increased in the combined group, and the chol/HDL ratio (atherogenic index) decreased in the aerobic group; however, there were no significant differences between the intervention programs. Taken together, both the exercise training programs were effective for improving body composition and inducing an antiatherogenic status.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: to analize the level of functional fitness of a group of postmenopausal women in the city of Presidente Prudente using the set of functional fitness tests of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and to check whether there are differences between groups of women in the fifth and sixth decade of life. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 175 postmenopausal women (follicle stimulating hormone level>26.72 mIU/L) in the city of Presidente Prudente in 2013. The inclusion criteria were not being part of any type of systematic motor intervention for at least six months before the collection of research data; absence of motor or cognitive impairment that would prevent the evaluation protocols, and absence of chronic or degenerative disease, musculoskeletal injury or comorbidity that could prevent or limit the evaluations. The women were evaluated by the same trained examiners. The 50 to 59 year group showed a mean age of 55.3 ± 4.5 years, mean FSH values of 53.5 ± 21.1 mIU/mL, mean coordination of 11.4 ± 2.2 seconds, mean strength of 20.1 ± 3.9 repetitions, mean flexibility of 51.7 ± 11.8 cm, mean 23.2 ± 2.8 seconds agility and mean aerobic resistance of 500 ± 43/2. The 60 to 69 year group had a mean age of 65.1 ± 4.1 years with FSH 54.9 ± 15.9, 11.6 ± 2.6 seconds coordination, strength 20.3 ± 4.7 repetitions, 54.6 ± 11.2 cm flexibility, agility 24.7 ± 4.3 seconds, and aerobic resistance of 508 ± 51 seconds. CONCLUSION: It was possible to analyze the functional fitness of postmenopausal women through the set of the American Alliance testing for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance with no significant differences between groups for the variables strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity and coordination, and with only the speed variable showing significant differences. We recommend further studies seeking to formulate normative values for the population in question.

ABSTRACT

OBJETIVO: analisar o nível de aptidão funcional de um grupo de mulheres na pós-menopausa da cidade de Presidente Prudente por meio do conjunto de testes de aptidão funcional da American Aliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance e verificar se existe diferença entre grupos de mulheres na quinta e sexta década de vida. MÉTODOS: estudo de característica transversal, com 175 mulheres na pós-menopausa (dosagem de hormônio folículo estimulante>26,72 mIU/L) desenvolvido na cidade de Presidente Prudente no ano de 2013. Os critérios de inclusão foram não ter feito parte de nenhum tipo de intervenção motora sistematizada durante, pelo menos, seis meses do período que antecedeu a coleta de dados da investigação; não apresentar comprometimentos motores ou cognitivos que inviabilizassem a realização dos protocolos de avaliação, não apresentar doença crônica ou degenerativa, lesão musculo-esquelética ou comorbidade que pudessem impedir ou limitar a realização das avaliações. As avaliações foram conduzidas pelos mesmos avaliadores treinados. O grupo 50 a 59 anos apresentou valores médios para idade de 55,3±4,5 anos, FSH de 53,5±21,1 mUI/mL, coordenação 11,4±2,2 segundos, força 20,1±3,9 repetições, flexibilidade 51,7±11,8 centímetros, agilidade 23,2±2,8 segundos e Resistência aeróbia 500±43 segundos e o grupo 60 a 69 anos apresentou idade média de 65,1±4,1 anos com FSH de 54,9±15,9, coordenação 11,6±2,6 segundos, força 20,3±4,7 repetições, flexibilidade 54,6±11,2 centímetros, agilidade 24,7±4,3 segundos e Resistência aeróbia 508±51 segundos. CONCLUSÃO: foi possível analisar a aptidão funcional de mulheres na pós-menopausa por meio do conjunto de testes da American Aliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance não havendo diferenças significativas para as variáveis força, flexibilidade, capacidade aeróbia e coordenação, sendo que apenas a variável agilidade demonstrou diferenças significativas. PURPOSE: to analize the level of functional fitness of a group of postmenopausal women in the city of Presidente Prudente using the set of functional fitness tests of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and to check whether there are differences between groups of women in the fifth and sixth decade of life. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 175 postmenopausal women (follicle stimulating hormone level>26.72 mIU/L) in the city of Presidente Prudente in 2013. The inclusion criteria were not being part of any type of systematic motor intervention for at least six months before the collection of research data; absence of motor or cognitive impairment that would prevent the evaluation protocols, and absence of chronic or degenerative disease, musculoskeletal injury or comorbidity that could prevent or limit the evaluations. The women were evaluated by the same trained examiners. The 50 to 59 year group showed a mean age of 55.3±4.5 years, mean FSH values of 53.5±21.1 mIU/mL, mean coordination of 11.4±2.2 seconds, mean strength of 20.1±3.9 repetitions, mean flexibility of 51.7±11.8 cm, mean 23.2±2.8 seconds agility and mean aerobic resistance of 500±43/2 . The 60 to 69 year group had a mean age of 65.1±4.1 years with FSH 54.9±15.9, 11.6±2.6 seconds coordination, strength 20.3±4.7 repetitions, 54.6±11.2 cm flexibility, agility 24.7±4.3 seconds, and aerobic resistance of 508±51 seconds. CONCLUSION: It was possible to analyze the functional fitness of postmenopausal women through the set of the American Alliance testing for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance with no significant differences between groups for the variables strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity and coordination, and with only the speed variable showing significant differences. We recommend further studies seeking to formulate normative values for the population in question. .

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 16-week program of combined aerobic and resistance training on the body composition of postmenopausal women who are obese. The participants were divided into two groups: training group (TG, n = 37) and non-trained control group (CG, n = 18). The trunk fat, fat mass, percentage of fat mass and fat-free mass were estimated using DXA. Three nonconsecutive 24-hour dietary recalls were conducted. The training protocol consisted of 50 minutes of resistance training followed by 30 minutes of aerobic training. After the 16-week training program, differences were observed in trunk fat (CG= 0.064 x TG= -0.571 Kg; p-value = .020), fat mass (CG= -0.088 x TG= -1.037 Kg; p-value = .020) and fat-free mass (CG= -0.388 x TG= 1.049 Kg; p = .001). Therefore, a 16-week program of systematic combined aerobic and resistance training in obese postmenopausal women was effective in improving fat-free mass and decreasing both whole and abdominal adiposity.


O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos de 16 semanas de treinamento aeróbio e resistido combinados na composição corporal de mulheres na pós-menopausa. As participantes foram divididas em dois grupos: grupo treinamento (GT, n = 37) e grupo controle (GC, n = 18). A gordura de tronco, massa gorda, percentual de gordura e massa livre de gordura foram estimadas pelo DEXA. O recordatório alimentar de 24 h foi realizado três dias não consecutivos para controle alimentar. O protocolo de treinamento consistiu de 50 minutos de treinamento resistido seguido por 30 minutos de treinamento aeróbio. Após 16 semanas de treinamento diferenças foram observadas na gordura de tronco (GC= 0,064 x GT= -0,571 Kg; p-valor= 0,020), massa gorda (GC= -0,088 x GT= -1,037 Kg; p-valor= 0,020) e massa livre de gordura (GC= -0,388 x GT= 1,049 Kg; p-valor=0,001). Assim, 16 semanas de treinamento aeróbio e resistido combinado em mulheres obesas na pós-menopausa é efetivo em aumentar a massa livre de gordura e reduzir adiposidade total e abdominal.


El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar los efectos de 16 semanas de entrenamiento aeróbico y de resistencia combinada en la composición corporal en mujeres posmenopáusicas obesas. Los participantes fueron divididos en dos grupos: grupo de entrenamiento (GE, n = 37) y control (C, n = 18). La grasa del tronco, la masa grasa, porcentaje de masa grasa y masa libre de grasa se ​​ utilizó el DXA. El recordatorio de 24 horas se realizó tres días no consecutivos para el control de los alimentos. El protocolo de entrenamiento consistió en 50 minutos de entrenamiento de resistencia, después 30 minutos de entrenamiento aeróbico. PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between total body and trunk fat mass and gait performance in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Thirty-nine postmenopausal women aged 50 years or more were studied. The following items were determined: weight and height to calculate body mass index (BMI), body composition using the technique of Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), and gait using baropodometry. The body composition variables used were total body fat, percent body fat and trunk fat, while the gait variables were percent double stance time and single stance time and gait speed. The women were divided into two groups according to the median for each body composition variable: less and more body fat, less and more percent body fat and less and more trunk fat. To compare the gait variables between groups, we used the Mann-Whitney test. To evaluate the possible relationships between body composition variables and gait variables, we used the Spearman correlation test. All analyses were performed with the level of significance set at 5%. RESULTS: The group with more trunk fat showed longer double stance time (p=0.007) and lower values of single stance time (0.033) than the group with less trunk fat. We found significant and positive correlations between trunk fat and double stance time (R=0.40) and negative correlations between trunk fat and single stance time (R=-0.32). CONCLUSION: Postmenopausal women with a greater amount of trunk fat tended to have impaired gait performance.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a relação entre gordura corporal total e de tronco com o desempenho da marcha em mulheres na menopausa. MÉTODOS: Trinta e nove mulheres na menopausa, com idade de 50 anos ou mais, foram avaliadas. As avaliações foram: peso e estatura para cálculo do índice de massa corporal (IMC), composição corporal pela técnica de Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) e marcha utilizando um baropodômetro. As variáveis de composição corporal utilizadas foram gordura corporal total, percentual de gordura corporal e gordura de tronco, enquanto as variáveis da marcha foram porcentagem de tempo de duplo apoio e de apoio simples e velocidade. As mulheres foram divididas de acordo com a mediana em dois grupos para cada variável da composição corporal: menos e mais gordura corporal, menos e mais percentual de gordura e menos e mais gordura de tronco. Para comparar as variáveis de marcha nesses grupos, foi utilizado o teste de Mann-Whitney. Para avaliar as possíveis relações entre as variáveis de composição corporal e marcha, o teste de correlação de Spearman foi utilizado. Todas as análises foram realizadas com nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: O grupo com mais gordura de tronco, quando comparado com o grupo com menos gordura de tronco, apresentou maiores valores de duplo apoio (p=0,007) e menores valores de apoio simples (0,03). Foram encontradas correlações significativas e positivas entre gordura de tronco e duplo apoio (R=0,40) e negativas entre gordura de tronco e apoio simples (R=-0,32). CONCLUSÃO: Mulheres na menopausa que apresentam maiores quantidade de gordura no tronco tendem a apresentar desempenho prejudicado na marcha. .

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Examinar a relação entre a prática habitual de atividade física (AF) com a gordura corporal total, gordura do tronco e glicemia de jejum em mulheres na menopausa. Métodos: Foram avaliadas 60 mulheres na menopausa com média de idade de 61,0 anos, da cidade de Presidente Prudente – SP. A massa corporal (MC) e a estatura foram mensuradas para o cálculo do Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC). A gordura corporal total (GC) e a gordura de tronco (TrG) foram estimadas por meio do DEXA. A glicemia sanguínea foi dosada e classificada de acordo com os valores de referência da American Diabetes Association (1997). A prática habitual de AF foi estimada utilizando acelerômetro triaxial (Actigraph) e classificada de acordo com Sasaki (2010). Foi realizada a comparação entre mulheres com valores de glicemia normal e glicemia alterada por meio do teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Foi utilizado o coeficiente de correlação de Spearman e em seguida a regressão logística binária para verificar a associação entre nível de AF e composição corporal com glicemia de jejum. Resultados: Mulheres que apresentavam hiperglicemia obtiveram maiores valores de MC (p=0,040), IMC (p=0,002) e GC (p=0,046), além de valores menores de AF leve (p=0,019), moderada (p=0,041) e de moderada+vigorosa (p=0,041). A variável AF moderada e moderada+vigorosa apresentaram, respectivamente, correlação negativa significante com o percentual de GC (p=0,003 e p=0,003) e com TrG (p=0,021 e p=0,021), quando analisado os valores absolutos de GC foi observado correlação negativa com a soma moderada+vigorosa (p=0,049)


Objective: To examine the relationship between the practice of physical activity (PA) with total body fat, trunk fat and fasting glucose in postmenopausal women. Methods: Sixty postmenopausal women, meanage of 61.0 years, from the city of Presidente Prudente SP, were assessed. Body mass (BM) and height were measured to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI). Total body fat (BF) and trunk fat mass (TFM) were estimated using DEXA. Fasting glucose was measured and classified according to the reference values of the American Diabetes Association (1997). The usual practice of PA was estimated using triaxial accelerometer, model GT3X (Actigraph,Pensacola,FL,USA) and classified according to Sasaki (2010). Comparisons were made between women with normal blood fasting glucose levels (NBG) and high blood fasting glucose(HBG) levels by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Spearman correlation coefficient was used and then the binary logistic regression to test the association between PA level and body composition with fasting glucose. Results: Women with HBG showed higher values of BM (p=0.040), BMI (p=0.002) and BF (p=0.046), and lower values of light (p=0.019), moderate (p=0.041) and moderate+vigorous (p=0.041) PA. The moderate and moderate+vigorous PA showed, respectively, a significant negative correlation with BF (p=0.003 and p=0.003) and TFM (p=0.021 and p=0.021). The FM presented negative correlation with moderate+vigorous (p=0.049). Women with lower TFM and classified as active showed protective factor (OR=0.133 [CI 0.023 to 0.784]) for impaired fasting glucose. Conclusion: The practice of moderate+vigorous intensity PA, held at least 150 minutes per week, is associated with lower trunk fat, and presents protective factor for impaired fasting glucose and risk of diabetes mellitus in postmenopausal women.

Comparisons between groups were performed using the independent t test and Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: The age group 59 years or older had higher mean values of total physical activity in counts (1,307.081 versus 2,843.840) and of minutes per week of moderate-vigorous physical activity (273 versus 156 minutes). Women who completed 150 minutes or more of moderate-vigorous physical activity had significantly lower total fat mass (43.8 versus 47.2 kg), higher lean mass (53.8 versus 49.6 kg) and lower BMI (27.7 versus 30.5 kg/m²) when compared to those with less than 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Only time spent in moderate activities showed a significant negative correlation with the percentage of total fat (r=-0.26, p<0.05), whereas total physical activity in counts correlated with the percentage of lean body mass (r=0,30), percentage of total fat (r=-0.32), trunk fat (r=-0.29), and BMI (r=-0.32); all correlations were statistically significant at p<0.05. CONCLUSION: menopausal women aged 50 years or more who spent more minutes in moderate and vigorous activity and higher total physical activity counts showed lower fat mass and higher lean mass.

Model of the study: Controlled clinical trial. Objective: To verify the effects of 16 weeks of combined aerobic and resistance training on cardiac autonomic modulation in menopausal women. Methods: 17 menopausal women were divided into two groups: the training group (TG: n=11) and control group (CG:n=6). The body composition variables were estimated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The cardiac autonomic modulation was evaluated by heart rate variability using linear indexes. The training protocol consisted of 16 weeks of 50 minutes of resistance training and 30 minutes of aerobic training. Results: For the TG there was an increase in the rMSSD(ms) index (pre:17,4±3,7 and post:24,8±13,1,p<0,045), an increase in the duration of the intervals between the cardiac beats (ms) (pre:891,2±80,2 andpost:974,1±71,4, p<0,003) and in the values of heart rate (bpm) (pre:68,1±6,4 and post:62,0±4,7, p<0,003), additionally for the spectral indexes in normalized units, changes for LF (pre:52,2±13,1 and post:44,5±12,4, p<0,025) and HF (pre:47,8±13,3 and post:55,5±12,4, p<0,025) were noticed, demonstrating increased parasympathetic and reduced sympathetic. There were no significant differences to CG. Conclusion: combined aerobic and resistance training promoted benefits to the autonomic modulation in menopausal women.


Modelo do estudo: Ensaio clínico controlado. Objetivo: Verificar a resposta de 16 semanas do treinamento aeróbio e resistido combinado sobre a modulação autonômica em mulheres na menopausa. Métodos: 17 mulheres foram divididas em dois grupos: grupo treino (GT: n=11) e grupo controle (GC:n=6). As variáveis de composição corporal foram estimadas pela absorptiometria radiológica de dupla energia. A modulação autonômica foi avaliada pela variabilidade da frequência cardíaca usando índices lineares. O protocolo de treinamento consistiu em 16 semanas, por 50 minutos de treinamento resistido e 30 minutos de treinamento aeróbio. Resultados: Para o GT houve incremento do índice rMSSD (ms) (pre:17,4±3,7 e pos: 24,8±13,1, p<0,045), aumento dos intervalos entre batimentos cardíacos consecutivos (pre:891,2±80,2 e pos:974,1±71,4, p<0,003) e dos valores de frequência cardíaca (bpm) (pre:68,1±6,4 e pos:62,0±4,7, p<0,003), para os índices espectrais em unidades normalizadas, houve redução de LF (pre:52,2±13,1 e pos:44,5±12,4, p<0,025) e incremento de HF (pre:47,8±13,3 e pos:55,5±12,4, p<0,025).Não houve diferenças significantes para o GC. Conclusão: o treinamento aeróbio e resistido combinado promoveu benefícios sobre a modulação autonômica em mulheres na menopausa.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a relação entre a prática de atividade física e composição corporal em mulheres na menopausa. METODOS: Participaram do estudo 62 mulheres, com 50 anos ou mais (61,2±7,6 anos), todas na menopausa. A prática de atividade física foi avaliada através do acelerômetro (minutos na semana e counts). A massa magra e massa gorda total e de tronco foram mensuradas com uso da absortimetria de raios X de dupla energia e expressas em valores percentuais. A relação entre as variáveis de composição corporal e a atividade física foi avaliada pela correlação de Spearman e de Pearson. As comparações entre grupos (de acordo com a prática de atividade física e idade) foram realizadas por meio do teste t independente e Mann-Whitney. RESULTADOS: O grupo de idade igual ou inferior a 59 anos apresentou maiores médias de atividade física total em counts (3.572.435 versus 2.843.840) e minutos por semana de atividade física moderada-vigorosa (273 minutos versus 156 minutos). As mulheres que acumularam 150 minutos ou mais de atividade física moderada-vigorosa apresentaram valores inferiores de massa gorda total (43,8 versus 47,2 kg/m²), valores superiores de massa corporal magra (53,8 versus 49,6 kg) e IMC reduzido (27,7 versus 30,46 kg/m²) quando comparadas àquelas com menos de 150 minutos de atividade física na semana. Apenas o tempo em atividades moderadas apresentou correlação negativa com o percentual de gordura total (r=-0,26, p<0,05); já atividade física total em counts correlacionou-se com o percentual de massa magra (r=0,30), percentual de gordura total (r=-0,32), gordura de tronco (r=-0,29), e IMC (r=-0,32), todas as correlações apresentaram significância estatística de p<0,05. CONCLUSÃO: Mulheres na menopausa com idade igual ou superior a 50 anos que apresentam minutos em atividades moderada e vigorosa, e counts de atividade física total superiores possuem níveis inferiores de massa gorda e superiores de massa magra.

BACKGROUND: Brazil is currently experiencing a nutrition transition: the displacement of traditional diets with foods high in saturated fat, sodium, and cholesterol and an increase in sedentary lifestyles. Despite these trends, our understanding of child obesity in Brazil is limited. Thus, the aims of this study were (1) to investigate the current prevalence of overweight and obesity in a large sample of children and adolescents living in São Paulo, Brazil, and (2) to identify the lifestyle behaviors associated with an increased risk of obesity in young Brazilians. METHODS: A total of 3,397 children and adolescents (1,596 male) aged 7-18 years were randomly selected from 22 schools in São Paulo, Brazil. Participants were classified as normal weight, overweight, or obese based on international age- and sex-specific body mass index thresholds. Selected sociodemographic, physical activity, and nutrition behaviors were assessed via questionnaire. RESULTS: Overall, 19.4% of boys and 16.1% of girls were overweight while 8.9% and 4.3% were obese. Two-way analysis of variance revealed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity was significantly higher in boys and in younger children when compared to girls and older children, respectively (P < 0.05 for both). Logistic regression analysis revealed that overweight was associated with more computer usage, parental encouragement to be active, and light soft drink consumption after controlling for differences in sex, age, and parental education (P < 0.05 for all). Conversely, overweight was associated with less active transport to school, eating before sleep, and consumption of breakfast, full-sugar soft drinks, fried food and confectionery (P < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that obesity in São Paulo children and adolescents has reached a level equivalent to that seen in many developed countries. We have also identified three key modifiable factors related to obesity that may be appropriate targets for future intervention in Brazilian youth: transport mode to school, computer usage, and breakfast consumption.

ABSTRACT

OBJETIVO: Analisar o efeito de 12 semanas de intervenção envolvendo prática de atividade física, orientações alimentar e psicológica sobre fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento da síndrome metabólica em crianças e adolescentes obesos. MÉTODOS: Estudo longitudinal com 23 crianças e adolescentes obesos, com idade entre seis e 16 anos (12,0±3,2 anos). Foram mensurados: gordura corporal total e de tronco, glicemia, colesterol total e triglicérides, pressão arterial sistólica e diastólica. Os jovens foram submetidos a três sessões semanais de 60 minutos de exercício físico (atividades esportivas recreativas, ginástica, circuitos e caminhadas), durante 12 semanas. O teste do qui-quadrado foi usado para comparar dados categóricos daqueles que apresentaram valores acima das recomendações para cada fator de risco. O teste t para dados pareados foi aplicado para comparar os dois momentos do estudo. RESULTADOS: Em indivíduos com alterações metabólicas no início do estudo, observou-se, após a intervenção, a diminuição de 11,6 por cento na glicemia (105 para 93mg/dL; p=0,046) e de 24,9 por cento no triglicérides (217 para 163mg/dL; p=0,013); porém, não houve diferenças na pressão arterial e no colesterol total. CONCLUSÕES: O programa de exercício físico aplicado nas crianças e adolescentes foi eficiente para melhorar os valores de glicemia e triglicérides.


OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of a 12-week intervention program based on physical activity practice, alimentary and psychological orientation on the risk factors for the development of metabolic syndrome in obese children and adolescents. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted with 23 obese children and adolescents, aged six to 16 years (12.0±3.2 years). Total body and trunk fat mass, glycemia, total cholesterol, triglycerides, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured. The children were submitted to physical activity three times a week during 12 weeks. Each session of 60 minutes consisted of recreational sports activities, gymnastics, circuits and track-walking. Chi-square test was used to compare categorical data for those patients who had values above the recommendations for each risk factor and Student's t-test for paired data was used to compare the two moments of the study. RESULTS: In subjects who had altered baseline values in the beginning of the study, the glycemia levels decreased 11.6 percent (from 105 to 93mg/dL; p=0.046) and the triglycerides decreased 24.9 percent (from 217 to 163mg/dL; p=0.013) after the intervention. On the other hand, no differences were noted for blood pressure and total cholesterol after the intervention. CCONCLUSIONS: The intervention was effective in improving blood glucose and triglycerides levels in children and adolescents enrolled in the study.

MÉTODOS: Estudio longitudinal con 23 niños y adolescentes obsesos, con edad entre seis y 16 años (12,0±3,2 años). Se midió: grasa corporal total y de tronco, glucemia, colesterol total y triglicéridos, presión arterial sistólica y diastólica Los jóvenes fueron sometidos a tres sesiones semanales de 60 minutos de ejercicio físico (actividades deportivas recreativas, gimnástica, circuitos y caminatas) durante 12 semanas. En el tratamiento estadístico, se realizó el análisis descriptivo, con promedio, desviación estándar y error estándar. La prueba de chi cuadrado fue usada para comparar datos categóricos con aquellos que presentaron valores por encima de las recomendaciones para cada Factor de Riesgo y la prueba t para datos pareados fue usada para comparar los dos momentos del estudio. RESULTADOS: En individuos con alteraciones metabólicas en el inicio del estudio, se observó, después de la intervención, reducción del 11,6 por ciento en la glucemia (1053mg/dL para 93mg/dL; p=0,046) y del 24,9 por ciento en los triglicéridos (217mg/dL para 163mg/dL; p=0,013); sin embargo, no hubo diferencias en la presión arterial y en el colesterol total. CONCLUSIÓN: El programa de ejercicio físico aplicado en los niños y adolescentes fue eficiente para mejorar los valores de glucemia y triglicéridos.
