ABSTRACT

Photoinduced Wolff rearrangements were studied by femtosecond time-resolved UV-vis and IR transient absorption spectroscopy. For BpCN2COCH3 in acetonitrile the IR data indicate the presence of at least two mechanisms of ketene formation. The first process is fast proceeding in either 1BpCN2COCH3*, or in a hot carbene, or in both species, while the second is slow proceeding through the intermediacy of a relaxed carbene. The slow time constant of the ketene formation dynamics obtained by ultrafast IR (700 ps) spectroscopy agrees with the relaxed carbene decay of 800 +/- 100 ps obtained by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy.

ABSTRACT

The primary photophysical and photochemical processes in the photochemistry of 1-acetoxy-2-methoxyanthraquinone (1a) were studied using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Excitation of 1a at 270 nm results in the population of a set of highly excited singlet states. Internal conversion to the lowest singlet npi* excited state, followed by an intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) process, proceeds with a time constant of 150 +/- 90 fs. The 1npi* excited state undergoes very fast intersystem crossing (ISC, 11 +/- 1 ps) to form the lowest triplet pipi* excited state which contains excess vibrational energy. The vibrational cooling occurs somewhat faster (4 +/- 1 ps) than ISC. The primary photochemical process, migration of acetoxy group, proceeds on the triplet potential energy surface with a time constant of 220 +/- 30 ps. The transient absorption spectra of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states of 1a, as well as the triplet excited state of the product, 9-acetoxy-2-methoxy-1,10-anthraquinone (2a), were detected. The assignments of the transient absorption spectra were supported by time-dependent DFT calculations of the UV-vis spectra of the proposed intermediates. All of the stationary points for acyl group migration on the triplet and ground state singlet potential energy surfaces were localized, and the influence of the acyl group substitution on the rate constants of the photochemical and thermal processes was analyzed.

ABSTRACT

Photolysis of phenyl and o-biphenylyl azide (at 270 nm) releases vibrationally excited singlet nitrene which isomerizes to the corresponding hot 1,2-didehydroazepine at a rate competitive with thermal relaxation. Using ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy we observe the formation of vibrationally excited 1,2-4,6-azacycloheptatetraene (1,2-didehydroazepine) in picoseconds following photolysis of phenyl azide in chloroform and o-biphenylyl azide in acetonitrile at ambient temperature.

ABSTRACT

We have observed the excited-state dynamics of Mo2(O2C-9-anthracene)4 in THF using ultrafast transient UV/vis absorption spectroscopy. Following excitation at 514.5 nm into the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) state, transient absorption bands of the 1MLCT state appear at 410 and 610 nm. We assign these features to the 1MLCT state, which has a lifetime of approximately 10 ps. The decay of 1MLCT is accompanied by the formation of the triplet 3MLCT state, with an absorption band peaking at 410 nm. Excitation at 347 nm populates directly the ligand-centered (LC) state. From the rise of the 1MLCT band, the lifetime of the 1LC state is estimated to be less than 1 ps.

ABSTRACT

Ultrafast laser flash photolysis (266 nm) of para- and ortho-biphenyl azide in acetonitrile produces azide excited states that have broad absorption bands centered at 480 nm. The para-biphenyl azide excited singlet state has a lifetime of 100 fs. The excited-state lifetime of the ortho-azide isomer is 450 +/- 150 fs. Decay of the azide excited states is accompanied by the formation of the corresponding known singlet nitrenes (para, lambdamax = 350 nm, ortho, lambdamax = 400 nm). Singlet para-biphenylnitrene is born with excess energy and undergoes vibrational cooling with a time constant of 11 ps to form the long-lived (tau approximately 9 ns) relaxed singlet nitrene. Singlet ortho-biphenylnitrene decays with a lifetime of 16 ps in acetonitrile at ambient temperature.
