ABSTRACT

Research shows licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants (NAs) have high rates of obesity and hypertension, potentially from limited engagement in physical activity (PA). Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to describe the self-reported exercise engagement, of licensed nurses (i.e., registered and licensed practical nurses) and NAs. We performed a secondary data analysis of two studies that used the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System - PA questionnaire to assess PA levels. The sample consisted of 31 NAs and 40 licensed nurses. Our findings show 50 (56.9%) NAs and licensed nurses report they engage in enough exercise to meet national guidelines. Our sample reported engaging in more exercise than the general population. We suspect measurement biases as over half of our sample reported engaging in at least 300 min of exercise each week. The potential over-reporting could be due to the perception of their work since they do not have sedentary jobs.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this pilot study was to test the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of Function Focused Care for Acute Care (FFC-AC) on acute care trauma nurses. A single group pre/post repeated measure design was used with measurements completed at baseline, 3 and 9 months post implementation of the intervention. FFC-AC was implemented by a function focused care nurse champion and includes 3 components: (I) Environmental and Policy Assessments; (II) Education; and (III) Mentoring and Motivating. The nurses were willing to participate in the study and attend educational sessions. There was evidence that exposure to FFC-AC strengthened beliefs in the benefits of providing this type of care increased the amount of function focused care that nurses provided to patients.

ABSTRACT

The clinical ladder program has evolved with the ever-changing environment of nursing at one academic medical center. The process has developed over time while adhering to the foundational tenets of recognizing and rewarding excellent bedside nursing practice. Nurses on the clinical ladder at this institution represent the ideal performance of mentoring and motivating other nurses and interdisciplinary team members. This article describes how the program has evolved over the last two decades, the challenges that have been met, and the successful outcomes that endure.
