ABSTRACT

Realizamos un análisis retrospectivo de los pacientes evaluados en nuestra unidad de memoria en los que se realizó determinación de biomarcadores licuorales de enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA). Se seleccionaron aquellos casos con diagnóstico de deterioro cognitivo leve debido a EA según criterios clínicos (criterios NIA-AA), déficit neuropsicológico comprobado, una puntuación igual a 3 en la escala GDS y un perfil alterado de biomarcadores en líquido cefalorraquídeo. De los 588 casos revisados, 110 cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. Durante el seguimiento, 50 de estos 110 casos (45,45%) progresaron a demencia por EA. Se observaron diferencias significativas en los niveles basales de tau total y tau fosforilada entre los casos que evolucionaron a demencia y los que permanecieron estables como deterioro cognitivo leve, siendo los niveles más altos en el grupo que progresó a demencia. Después del ajuste por edad, sexo, antecedentes de hipertensión, diabetes y nivel educativo, un aumento del 10% en los valores de proteína tau total se asoció con un aumento del 7,60% en el riesgo de progresión a demencia (HR = 2,22, IC 95% [1,28, 3,84], p = 0,004). En pacientes con deterioro cognitivo leve debido a EA un perfil alterado de biomarcadores licuorales, concentraciones progresivamente mayores de tau-t y tau-p se asocian a un mayor riesgo de conversión a demencia.(AU)

Data on more than 50,000 registrations in the Automated Childhood Cancer Information System (ACCIS) database were used to present an overview of regional patterns in childhood cancer incidence in Europe during 1988-1997, and to present additional detail on selected carcinomas whose occurrence in childhood is seldom described because of their rarity. Total age-standardised incidence was 138.5 per million for Europe overall, and varied between regions from 131.1 per million in the British Isles to 160.1 per million in Northern Europe. Incidence varied significantly between regions for nearly all diagnostic groups. The greatest range of regional incidence rates was for central nervous system (CNS) tumours, from 27.0 per million in the West to 43.8 per million in the North. Differences in registration practice for non-malignant tumours account for some of this variation. There was a marked excess of carcinoma in Eastern Europe, which was wholly attributable to the high incidence of thyroid carcinoma in Belarus, though there was also evidence of inter-regional variation attributable to differences in registration practice. The geographical heterogeneity of incidence rates for other diagnostic groups seems more likely to reflect variations in underlying risk.

ABSTRACT

El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la situación del consumo de drogas de síntesis entre la población juvenil del Principado de Asturias, así como identificar las variables relacionadas con el uso de estas sustancias. La muestra se compuso de 1597 estudiantes de educación secundaria de esta Comunidad. Los resultados señalan que el 8% de los jóvenes encuestados había consumido drogas de diseño alguna vez, el 7% había consumido a lo largo del último año y el 4,7% en los últimos 30 días. La prevalencia aumenta con la edad y los hombres consumen más que las mujeres. Las variables relacionadas con el consumo son, entre otras, pobre rendimiento académico, actitudes tolerantes hacia las drogas, vivir solo con uno de los padres, tener mala relación con la familia y consumo de drogas de los amigos y la familia. Estos resultados indican un crecimiento importante del consumo de estas sustancias en Asturias y apuntan la necesidad de la puesta en marcha de estrategias que frenen este incremento entre la población juvenil (AU)


The objective of this study is to analyze the situation of designer drug use in young people in Asturias (northern Spain), and to identify the variables related to the consumption of these substances. The sample was made up of 1597 students from secondary schools in this Autonomous Region. Results show that 8% of the young people interviewed had consumed designer drugs at some time, 7% had taken them during the previous year and 4.7% had used them during the previous 30 days. Prevalence of use increased with age, and males consumed more than females. Variables related to consumption are, among others, poor academic performance, tolerant attitudes towards drugs, living with only one parent, strained relations with family, and drug use by friends and family members. These results point to considerable growth in consumption of these substances among the adolescent population in Asturias, and suggest the need for strategies to halt this increase (AU)

ABSTRACT

In recent years, a growing number of studies suggests that increases in air pollution levels may have short-term impact on human health, even at pollution levels similar to or lower than those which have been considered to be safe to date. The different methodological approaches and the varying analysis techniques employed have made it difficult to make a direct comparison among all of the findings, preventing any clear conclusions from being drawn. This has led to multicenter projects such as the APHEA (Short-Term Impact of Air Pollution on Health. A European Approach) within a European Scope. The EMECAM Project falls within the context of the aforesaid multicenter studies and has a wide-ranging projection nationwide within Spain. Fourteen (14) cities throughout Spain were included in this Project (Barcelona, Metropolitan Area of Bilbao, Cartagena, Castellón, Gijón, Huelva, Madrid, Pamplona, Seville, Oviedo, Valencia, Vigo, Vitoria and Saragossa) representing different sociodemographic, climate and environmental situations, adding up to a total of nearly nine million inhabitants. The objective of the EMECAM project is that to asses the short-term impact of air pollution throughout all of the participating cities on the mortality for all causes, on the population and on individuals over age 70, for respiratory and cardiovascular design causes. For this purpose, with an ecological, the time series data analyzed taking the daily deaths, pollutants, temperature data and other factors taken from records kept by public institutions. The period of time throughout which this study was conducted, although not exactly the same for all of the cities involved, runs in all cases from 1990 to 1996. The degree of relationship measured by means of an autoregressive Poisson regression. In the future, the results of each city will be combined by means of a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The studies conducted to date regarding the possibility that air pollutants, at levels considered safe to date, are capable of having impact are capable of having impact on human health have not led to homogeneous findings. This study is aimed at estimating the degrees of relationship between the daily levels of the pollutants and the death rate on a short-terms basis in the two most populated cities in Austria (Gijón and Oviedo), as well as contributing to increasing the statistical importance and the representative nature of the EMECAM Project, within which this study is comprised. METHODS: Ecological time series study, Estimate of degrees of group exposure based on the readings taken at the pollution control stations. Modeling of the death rate series, including control variables, by means of Poisson regression. Estimating risks related to each pollutant for the death rate, controlling the series-based autocorrelation. RESULTS: Throughout the 1993-1996 period, the pollution by means of particles in suspension and CO was greater in Gijón, that involving SO2 and NO2 having been greater in Oviedo. In these two cities, the levels can be considered to be low and to fall within what is considered admissible under the laws currently in impact. Most of the relative risk forecasts neared the zero impact point, although significant positive (especially for NO2) as well as negative relationships have been found to exist. The significant relationships found were not proven to be consistent in these two cities for the periods studied. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings of this study, the conclusion cannot be drawn that a clear-cut relationship exists between the pollutants studied (particles, SO2, NO2, CO) and the death rate on a short-term basis, at least at the levels detected in Gijón and Oviedo.

ABSTRACT

This article draws a comparison and provides a discussion of the findings resulting from the local analyses of the 14 cities participating in the EMECAM Project. An analysis is made of the time series related to mortality, pollutants (particles in suspension, SO2, NO2, O3 and CO), temperature and other factors taken from records of public institutions. By using Poisson autoregressive regression, an estimate has been made of the short-term relationship between the number of deaths and the air pollution indicators in each one of the following cities: Barcelona, metropolitan area of Bilbao, Cartagena, Castellón, Gijón, Huelva, Madrid, Pamplona, Seville, Oviedo, Valencia, Vigo, Vitoria and Saragossa. The findings reveal the air pollution figures in our country to be similar to those of other European cities. The levels of the different pollutants point toward road traffic as being the main source of most of this pollution. A relationship has been found between the mortality and different pollutants in most cities, although the results are not homogeneous among the cities and show variability in the different causes under study. In some cities, especially in those having smaller populations, there have been no findings providing any evidence of a relationship, or the findings themselves are not highly consistent. The meta-analysis will provide estimates for all of the cities as a whole and will allow the possibility of making a more clear-cut assessment of the time lag impact of air pollution on the mortality. Worthy of special mention is the participation in this project of public health officers as actively involved researchers.
