ABSTRACT

Measuring gravity from an aircraft or a ship is essential in geodesy, geophysics, mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, and navigation. Today, only relative sensors are available for onboard gravimetry. This is a major drawback because of the calibration and drift estimation procedures which lead to important operational constraints. Atom interferometry is a promising technology to obtain onboard absolute gravimeter. But, despite high performances obtained in static condition, no precise measurements were reported in dynamic. Here, we present absolute gravity measurements from a ship with a sensor based on atom interferometry. Despite rough sea conditions, we obtained precision below 10-5 m s-2. The atom gravimeter was also compared with a commercial spring gravimeter and showed better performances. This demonstration opens the way to the next generation of inertial sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope) based on atom interferometry which should provide high-precision absolute measurements from a moving platform.

ABSTRACT

Glia and neurons of the hypothalamoneurohypophysial system (HNS) undergo reversible morphological changes, which are concomitant with the remodelling of afferents onto the neurons, under different conditions of neurohormone secretion. Here, we show that the adult rat HNS contains high levels of tenascin-C (TN-C), which is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein whose expression is usually associated with neuronal-glial interactions in the developing and lesioned central nervous system (CNS). By using light and electron microscopic immunocytochemical procedures, we visualized TN-C immunoreactivity in the hypothalamic supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular nuclei, where somata of the neurons are localized; in the median eminence, where their axons transit; and in the neurohypophysis, where they terminate. Hypothalamic areas adjacent to the magnocellular nuclei were devoid of immunoreactivity. Electron microscopy of the neurohypophysis showed immunolabelling of perivascular spaces, glial (pituicyte) and axonal surfaces, a type of labelling that also characterized the median eminence. In the hypothalamic nuclei, there was labelling of extracellular spaces and astrocytic surfaces. In normal animals, we detected no cytoplasmic reaction in glia somata, neurons, or endothelial cells. However, in animals treated with the intracellular transport blocker colchicine, there was intracytoplasmic labelling of all HNS glial cells, indicating a glial source for TN-C. Immunoblot analysis revealed TN-C isoforms of apparent high molecular weight (225, 240, and 260 kD) in the SON and median eminence, whereas lower MW forms (190/200 kD) predominated in the neurohypophysis. By using immunocytochemistry and immunoblot analysis, we found no visible differences in TN-C expression in relation to age, sex, or differing neurohypophysial secretion, which suggests that the expression of TN-C is a permanent feature of the HNS.

ABSTRACT

Galanin is widely distributed throughout the rat neural and endocrine system with the highest concentration in the anterior pituitary. The effects of galanin were investigated in rat tumor pituitary cells (GH3/B6). A single stimulation with galanin caused prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (GH) release within a narrow range of concentrations (10(-11)-10(-9) M). However, secretory responses were not consistently observed upon subsequent galanin stimulation. Galanin triggered a rise in cytosolic Ca2+ (burst in [Ca2+]i transients) with a similar responsiveness. By contrast, no change in PRL mRNA was detectable in response to the peptide. These data suggest that galanin which binds to high-affinity receptors in anterior pituitary cells can exert subtle modulations of pituitary cell functions.

ABSTRACT

Three dopamine receptor mRNAs were detected by reverse polymerase chain reaction in the rat forebrain during ontogeny. The D1 receptor mRNA gave a faint signal from gestational day 11 (G11) on, while the D1b receptor was not detectable before G12. The D3 receptor mRNA was slightly expressed at G11 and clearly present at G14. Our results show that these mRNAs are present at early stages of fetal life, each one with its specific time of appearance.

ABSTRACT

A bacteriostatic activity in Eisenia fetida andrei cell free coelomic fluid is described. This activity is detected by growth inhibition of a bacteria Bacillus megaterium. Gel filtration analysis revealed eleven coelomic fluid protein fractions designated A, B,..J. Antibacterial activity was mainly found within fractions B and C. Chromatofocusing resolved fractions B-C into five different peaks named alpha BC, beta BC,... epsilon BC. Antibacterial activity appeared mediated by three different proteins characterized by their molecular weights (20,000, 40,000 and 45,000) and their isoelectric points (4.9, 5.75 and 6.0). These bacteriostatic proteins possess either hemolysis or hemagglutination activities. The polymorphic aspect of this humoral antibacterial defense is discussed.
