ABSTRACT

The authors conducted a prospective and retrospective study of the radiographic findings in 45 patients with traumatic rupture of the aorta. In 7 cases, a left apical cap was the only clearly visible abnormality. In 11 cases a cap was present together with a poorly defined aortic knob, while in 13 cases both were seen along with mediastinal widening. In 14 cases, all of the classical signs of aortic rupture were present, but an apical cap was not seen or was not considered significant. Of 32 aortograms obtained, 12 were taken solely because of an apical cap; 2 were positive for aortic rupture and 10 were negative. No aortic rupture was found in patients with a left apical cap and fractures of the ribs, vertebral bodies, or scapulae.

ABSTRACT

A three-stage neodymium:glass laser has been used to produce collimated x-radiation from an aqueous copper(II) sulfate gel. The 1.06-mum Q-switch pulse from the neodymium laser was focused by a cylindrical lens to a horizontal line traversing a microscope slide sandwich that contained a thin film of gel. The emission from the gel was detected as a 0.2-mm spot on shielded, standard x-ray photographic film at distances that varied from 30 to 110 cm from the sandwich. Spot size did not increase with distance, suggesting coherence of the x-rays.

ABSTRACT

A comparison of undecafluorocyclohexane and dodecafluorocyclohexane shows that both exist at 23 degrees in face-centred cubic cells with edges a(0) = 10.00 +/- 0.02 A for C(6)HF(11) and a(0) = 10.11 +/- 0.02 A for C(6)F(12). The X-ray data are consistent with internal rotation of the molecules or statistical randomness of the molecules in the compounds.
