ABSTRACT

High-dose perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) impairs oocyte maturation and offspring quality. However, the physiological concentrations of PFOA in follicular fluids of patients with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) were detected at lower levels, thus the relationship between physiological PFOA and reproductive disorders remains elusive. Here, we investigated whether physiological PFOA exposure affects gonad function in adult zebrafish. Physiological PFOA exposure resulted in POI-like phenotypes in adult females, which exhibited decreased spawning frequency, reduced number of ovulated eggs, abnormal gonadal index, and aberrant embryonic mortality. Meanwhile, oocytes from PFOA-exposed zebrafish showed mitochondrial disintegration and diminished mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Unlike the high-dose treated oocytes exhibiting high reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and excessive apoptosis, physiological PFOA reduced the ROS levels and did not trigger apoptosis. Interestingly, physiological PFOA exposure would not affect testis function, indicating specific toxicity in females. Mechanistically, PFOA suppressed the NAD+ biosynthesis and impaired mitochondrial function in oocytes, thus disrupting oocyte maturation and ovarian fertility. Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), a precursor for NAD+ biosynthesis, alleviated the PFOA-induced toxic effects in oocytes and improved the oocyte maturation and fertility upon PFOA exposure. Our findings discover new insights into PFOA-induced reproductive toxicity and provide NMN as a potential drug for POI therapy.

ABSTRACT

Cholestane-3ß,5α,6ß-triol (CT) and its analogues are abundant in natural sources and are reported to demonstrate cytotoxicity toward different kinds of tumor cells without a deep probe into their mechanism of action. CT is also one of the major metabolic oxysterols of cholesterol in mammals and is found to accumulate in various diseases. An extensive exploration of the biological roles of CT over the past few decades has established its identity as an apoptosis inducer. In this study, the effects of CT on A549 cell death were investigated through cell viability assays. RNA-sequencing analysis and western blot of CT-treated A549 cells revealed the role of CT in inducing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response and enhancing autophagy flux, suggesting a putative mechanism of CT-induced cell-death activation involving reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated ER stress and autophagy. It is reported for the first time that the upregulation of autophagy induced by CT can serve as a cellular cytotoxicity response in accelerating CT-induced cell death in A549 cells. This research provides evidence for the effect of CT as an oxysterol in cell response to oxidative damage and allows for a deep understanding of cholesterol in its response in an oxidative stress environment that commonly occurs in the progression of various diseases.

ABSTRACT

A carbazole-based artificial light-harvesting system (LHS) was successfully fabricated based on the supramolecular assembly of AIE-enhanced donor (CTD), water-soluble phosphate-pillar[5]arene (WPP5), and eosin Y (ESY) acceptor. The formed WPP5-CTD possessed remarkable AIE emission, featuring an ideal energy donor for light harvesting. After encapsulation of ESY, the energy of WPP5-CTD was efficiently transferred to ESY in WPP5-CTD-ESY, and the antenna effect was 38.5, which was much higher than that of recently reported LHSs. Notably, WPP5-CTD-ESY was successfully utilized as a photocatalyst to realize the cross-coupling dehydrogenation reaction of diphenylphosphine oxide and benzothiazole derivatives, suggesting great potential for aqueous photocatalytic applications of this LHS.

ABSTRACT

Momordica cochinchinensis (Lour.) Spreng. is an important medicinal plant that is used to treat various diseases in South and Southeast Asia. In this study, the complete plastome of M. cochinchinensis was sequenced and found to exhibit a total length of 158,955 bp, with a large single copy (LSC) region of 87,924 bp and a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,479 bp, as well as with two inverted repeats (IRs) that were both 26,726 bp in length. In total, 129 genes were detected, comprising 86 protein-encoding genes, 8 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and 35 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes. Furthermore, the inferred phylogenetic tree confirmed that M. cochinchinensis belongs to the genus Momordica in the Cucurbitaceae family. The research results will be used for authenticating M. cochinchinensis plant materials and for analyzing the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in Momordica.

ABSTRACT

All-inorganic CsPbI2Br with outstanding thermal stability and excellent photoelectric properties is considered as a promising candidate for photovoltaic applications. However, the efficiency of CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is still much lower than that of their organic-inorganic hybrid counterparts or CsPbI3-based devices. Herein, we obtained an optimized CsPbI2Br PSC (0.09 cm2) with a champion efficiency of 17.38% and a record fill factor of 83.6% by introducing potassium anthraquinone-1,8-disulfonate (DAD) in the precursor solution. The synergistic effect between the electronegative functional groups and K+ ions in the DAD structure can not only effectively regulate the crystallization growth process to improve the crystalline quality and stability of photo-active CsPbI2Br but also optimize the energy level alignment and passivate the defects to improve the carrier transport properties. The efficiency of the corresponding large-area device (5 cm × 5 cm with an active area of 19.25 cm2) reached 13.20%. Moreover, the optimized CsPbI2Br PSC exhibited negligible hysteresis and enhanced long-term storage stability as well as thermal stability. Our method produces more stable photo-active CsPbI2Br with excellent photoelectric properties for industrial applications or perovskite/silicon tandem cells.

ABSTRACT

A novel water-soluble phosphate-pillar[5]arene (WPP5)-based artificial light-harvesting system (LHS) was successfully fabricated through the supramolecular assembly of phenyl-pyridyl-acrylonitrile derivative (PBT), WPP5, and organic pigment Eosin Y (ESY). Initially, after host-guest interaction, WPP5 could bind well with PBT and form WPP5 âŠƒ PBT complexes in water, which further assembled into WPP5 âŠƒ PBT nanoparticles. WPP5 âŠƒ PBT nanoparticles performed an outstanding aggregation-induced emission (AIE) capability because of the J-aggregates of PBT in WPP5 âŠƒ PBT nanoparticles, which were appropriate as fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) donors for artificial light-harvesting. Moreover, due to the emission region of WPP5 âŠƒ PBT overlapped well with the UV-Vis absorption of ESY, the energy of WPP5 âŠƒ PBT (donor) could be significantly transferred to ESY (acceptor) via FRET process in WPP5 âŠƒ PBT-ESY nanoparticles. Notably, the antenna effect (AEWPP5⊃PBT-ESY) of WPP5 âŠƒ PBT-ESY LHS was determined to be 30.3, which was much higher than that of recent artificial LHSs for photocatalytic cross-coupling dehydrogenation (CCD) reactions, suggesting a potential application in photocatalytic reaction. Furthermore, through the energy transfer from PBT to ESY, the absolute fluorescence quantum yields performed a remarkable increase from 14.4% (for WPP5 âŠƒ PBT) to 35.7% (for WPP5 âŠƒ PBT-ESY), further confirming their FRET processes in WPP5 âŠƒ PBT-ESY LHS. Subsequently, in order to output the harvested energy for catalytic reactions, WPP5 âŠƒ PBT-ESY LHSs were used as photosensitizers to catalyze the CCD reaction of benzothiazole and diphenylphosphine oxide. Compared to free ESY group (21%), a significant cross-coupling yield of 75% in WPP5 âŠƒ PBT-ESY LHS was observed, because more UV region energy of PBT was transferred to ESY for CCD reaction, which suggested more potential in improving the catalytic activity of organic pigment photosensitizers in aqueous systems.

ABSTRACT

The measurement of hemoglobin is a vital index for diagnosing and monitoring diseases in clinical practice. At present, solutions need to be found for the soreness, high risk of infection, and inconvenient operation associated with invasive detection methods. This paper proposes a method for non-invasively detecting hemoglobin levels based on multi-wavelength photoplethysmography (PPG) signals. AFE4490 and TMUX1109 were used to implement the low-cost collection of an eight-LED transmissive PPG signal. We used seven regular LEDs and one broadband LED (Osram SFH4737) as light sources. Additionally, a finger clip integrating multiple sensors was designed and manufactured via 3D printing to simultaneously monitor the LED-sensor distance and the pressure from the tester's finger during PPG signal acquisition. We used a method to extract features from PPG signals using a sliding-window's variance and an evaluation metric for PPG signals based on the AdaCost classification. Data were gathered from 56 participants from the Nephrology department, including 16 anemic patients. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted on the collected data to remove any data with a weak correlation. The advantage of using a broadband LED as a light source was also demonstrated. Several non-invasive hemoglobin regression models were created by applying AdaBoost, BPNN, and Random Forest models. The study's results indicate that the AdaBoost model produced the best performance, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.67 g/L and a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.91 The study results show that the device we designed and manufactured can achieve effective non-invasive hemoglobin detection and represents a new methodological approach to obtaining measurements that can be applied in a clinical setting.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the protective effect of forsythiaside A on acute lung injury (ALI) in septic rats. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into normal control group, sham operation group, sepsis model group, and forsythiaside A intervention group, with 10 rats in each group. The rats in the normal control group did not receive any intervention; the rats in the sham operation group only underwent abdominal surgery; and those in the model group and forsythiaside A intervention group received cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) to establish the sepsis rat model. The rats in the forsythiaside A intervention group were given 75 mL/kg of forsythiaside A within 0.5 hour after operation, and repeated after 6 hours. The rats in the sham operation group and model group were given the same amount of normal saline at the same time points. The lung tissues were collected for pathological examination 12 hours after operation. The lung homogenate was prepared, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukins (IL-1ß, IL-6). The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was detected by xanthine oxidase method, and the content of malonaldehyde (MDA) was detected by colorimetry. The expression of nuclear factor-κB p65 (NF-κB p65) was detected by Western blotting. RESULTS: There was no significant pathological change of lung tissue in both normal control group and sham operation group, and there was no significant difference in each parameter between the two groups. The rats in the model group had interstitial infiltration of inflammatory cells, alveolar structure destruction, alveolar septum thicken, extensive alveolar hemorrhage, telangiectasia; the levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, MDA and NF-κB p65 protein expression in lung tissue were significantly higher than those in the normal control group and sham operation group [TNF-α (ng/L): 132.81±16.15 vs. 45.08±5.98, 46.10±6.72, IL-1ß (ng/L): 137.32±15.22 vs. 51.03±7.89, 50.92±8.13; IL-6 (ng/L): 138.39±14.28 vs. 51.68±7.03, 52.48±7.36; MDA (kU/g): 1.79±0.13 vs. 0.96±0.05, 0.97±0.05; NF-κB p65 protein (NF-κB p65/GAPDH): 2.82±0.23 vs. 1.76±0.12, 1.82±0.13; all P < 0.05], the activity of SOD decreased significantly (kU/g: 45.90±5.46 vs. 92.11±10.13, 93.36±10.56, both P < 0.05). The changes in lung histopathology in the forsythiaside A intervention group were obviously improved as compared with the model group, which showed less inflammatory cell infiltration, less alveolar septum thickening, less bleeding and more intact structures; the levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, MDA and the expression of NF-κB p65 protein in lung tissue were significantly lower than those in the model group [TNF-α (ng/L): 72.48±9.78 vs. 132.81±16.15, IL-1ß (ng/L): 83.85±12.46 vs. 137.32±15.22, IL-6 (ng/L): 81.88±11.89 vs. 138.39±14.28, MDA (kU/L): 1.29±0.09 vs. 1.79±0.13, NF-κB p65 protein (NF-κB p65/GAPDH): 2.29±0.19 vs. 2.82±0.23, all P < 0.05], SOD activity increased significantly (kU/g: 66.03±7.98 vs. 45.90±5.46, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Forsythiaside A can effectively alleviate ALI in septic rats. The mechanism may be related to down-regulate the expression of NF-κB p65 and reduce the level of inflammatory factors and free radicals in lung tissue, thereby against acute lung injury in septic rats.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate disparities in financial toxicity and psychological distress in patients with cancer as a function of treatment and reveal the relationship between financial toxicity and psychological distress. Methods: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study. Patients were recruited from March 2017 to October 2018, and questionnaires were completed regarding their demographics, financial toxicity, and psychological distress. A multiple linear regression model was used to examine factors associated with financial and psychological distress. Results: Significant financial toxicity and psychological distress occurred in 47.9% and 56.5% of patients, respectively. Financial toxicity (P â€‹= â€‹0.032) and psychological distress (P â€‹< â€‹0.001) were statistically different among the single chemotherapy, adjuvant therapy, and surgery groups. Multivariable analysis revealed that patients aged 50-59 years (P â€‹= â€‹0.035), 60-69 years (P â€‹= â€‹0.007), and 70 years or older (P â€‹= â€‹0.002) had higher the Comprehensive Score for financial Toxicity (COST) scores compared with patients less than 50 years old. Patients with personal annual income > 40,000 CNY reported higher COST scores than those who had < 20,000 CNY (P â€‹< â€‹0.001). Patients who had Urban Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URBMI) (P â€‹= â€‹0.030) or New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS) (P â€‹= â€‹0.006) compared with Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) presented lower COST scores than patients with UEBMI. The multiple analysis model of psychological distress showed that an age of more than 70 years (P â€‹= â€‹0.010) was significantly associated with low the Distress Thermometer (DT) scores, and patients with colorectal cancer (P â€‹= â€‹0.009), the surgery group (P â€‹< â€‹0.001) and adjuvant therapy group (P â€‹< â€‹0.001) were significantly associated with high DT scores. The correlations between financial toxicity and psychological distress were mild but statistically significant in the chemotherapy-related treatment groups. Conclusions: The research highlights the high rates of financial and psychological distress in adult patients. Multidimensional distress screening and psychosocial interventions should be provided for patients with cancer according to related factors.

ABSTRACT

Background: Septic shock (SS) is the most common severe syndrome in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Enhancing the monitoring of hemodynamic indexes in SS patients carries huge clinical implications for reducing patient mortality. Recently, pulse indicator continuous cardiac output (PICCO) has been widely used in clinical practice, but its advantages than central venous pressure (CVP) in guiding the treatment of SS patients remains to be refined. Therefore, this study is aimed at assessing the clinical effects of PICCO in the treatment of patients with SS. Methods: The authors systematically searched several databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge) between January 2001 and February 2021. When searching for relevant articles, the authors combined the following phrases describing the monitoring group ("pulse indicator continuous cardiac output," "central venous pressure") with the disease of interest as well as management ("SS," "sepsis"). The outcomes were independently assessed by two reviewers who scored the articles for methodological quality using the Cochrane Collaboration's "risk of bias" tool. Forest plots, as well as sensitivity and bias analyses, were carried out for the included articles. The primary outcome measures were length of ICU stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, 28-day mortality, and fluid resuscitation volume. Results: Ten studies comprising 350 cases monitored with PICCO and 373 cases monitored with traditional CVP were eventually identified. PICCO-monitored patients were observed to be significantly associated with shorter ICU stay than CVP-monitored patients (MD: -3.04, 95% CI: -4.74 to -1.34, P = 0.0005), shorter time of mechanical ventilation (MD: -1.84, 95% CI: -2.80 to -0.87, P = 0.0002), and lower 28-day mortality (RR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.48 to 0.94, P = 0.02). The two groups showed no significant difference in subgroup analysis for fluid resuscitation volumes (P > 0.05). Conclusion: PICCO monitoring technique can significantly improve the prognosis of SS patients, shorten the time of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay, and reduce the 28-day mortality, which has positive guiding significance for patients with SS. Given the limitations of the quantity and quality of included studies, further research is warranted to verify the conclusions.

Cucurbita ficifolia Bouché is an important germplasm resource used for rootstock and hypoglycemic food in Cucurbitaceae. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. ficifolia has been determined in this study. The total genome size is 157,533 bp in length and contains a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,639 bp, which were separated by large single copy (LSC) and small single copy (SSC) of 88,112 bp and 18,143 bp, respectively. A total of 130 genes were predicted including 86 protein-coding genes, eight rRNA genes and 36 tRNA genes. Further, Maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis revealed that C. ficifolia is a base clade of genus Cucurbita and closer to Cucurbita maxima. The chloroplast genome of C. ficifolia would promote the germplasm exploration, phylogenetic relationships, and molecular biology researches in Cucurbita.

ABSTRACT

Dioscorea esculenta (Lour.) Burkill is an essential tuber crop with pharmacological effects in the family Dioscoreaceae. The complete chloroplast genome of D. esculenta was determined in this study. The total genome size is 153, 437 bp in length and demonstrates a typical quadripartite structure containing a large single copy (LSC, 83,628 bp) and a small single copy (SSC, 18,893 bp), separated by a pair of inverted repeats (IRa, IRb) of 25,458 bp. The GC content of the complete chloroplast genome sequence is 37.07%. A total of 131 genes were predicted including 86 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic tree analysis of 25 species belonging to the genus Dioscorea indicated that D. esculenta and D. sansibarensis were clustered into one branch.

Canna edulis Ker Gawl. is an essential traditional tuber crop used for fresh consumption and to isolate starch in some tropical and semitropical regions. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. edulis has been determined in this study. The total genome size is 164,650 bp in length and contains a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 27,278 bp, which were separated by large single-copy (LSC) and small single-copy (SSC) of 91,421 bp and 18,673 bp, respectively. A total of 131 genes were predicted including 86 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNA genes and 37 tRNA genes. Further, maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis revealed that C. edulis belongs to Cannaceae in Zingiberales. The chloroplast genome of C. edulis is first complete genome sequence in Cannaceae and would play a significant role in the development of molecular markers in plant phylogenetic and population genetic studies.

C. perfringens type C can induce enteritis accompanied by diarrhea and annually causes significant economic losses to the global pig industry. The pathogenic mechanisms of C. perfringens type C in pigs are still largely unknown. To investigate this, we challenged seven-day-old piglets with C. perfringens type C to cause diarrhea. We performed hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) staining of the small intestine (including duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) and assessed gene expression in the ileal tissue. H&E staining of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum demonstrated inflammation and edema of the lamina propria and submucosa. A total of 2181 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained in ileal tissues. Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis of DEGs indicated that the main pathways were enriched in the T cell receptor signaling pathway, NF-kappa B signaling pathway, and (tumor necrosis factor) TNF signaling pathway. These results provide insights into the pathogenicity of C. perfringens type C and improve our understanding of host-bacteria interactions.

ABSTRACT

An enzymatic procedure based on a catalase biosensor for the detection of forchlorfenuron (CPPU) has been reported in this work. Catalase was immobilized on boron nitride (BN) sheets dispersed in chitosan by adsorption. The immobilized catalase exhibited direct electron transfer character and excellent electrocatalytic activity towards H2O2 reduction. After introducing CPPU into the H2O2 containing phosphate buffer solution, the catalase-catalyzed H2O2 reduction current decreased. By measuring the current decrease, CPPU can be determined in the range of 0.5-10.0 µM with the detection limit of 0.07 µM. The non-competitive inhibition behavior of CPPU towards catalase was verified by the Lineweaver-Burk plots. Long stability character has been ascribed to this biosensor. Possible use of this biosensor in flow systems is illustrated. The proposed biosensor has been successfully applied to CPPU determination in fruits samples with satisfactory results.

ABSTRACT

6-Benzylaminopurine (6-BA) is a kind of cytokinin which could regulate the activities of the antioxidant defense system of plants. In this work, its interaction with and inhibition of beef liver catalase have been systematically investigated using spectroscopic, isothermal titration calorimetric and molecular docking methods under physiological conditions. The fluorescence quenching of beef liver catalase (BLC) by 6-BA is due to the formation of 6-BA-BLC complex. Hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions play major roles in stabilizing the complex. The Stern-Volmer quenching constant, binding constant, the corresponding thermodynamic parameters and binding numbers were measured. The results of UV-vis absorption, three-dimensional fluorescence, synchronous fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopic results demonstrate that the binding of 6-BA results in the micro-environment change around tyrosine (Tyr) and tryptophan (Trp) residues of BLC. The BLC-mediated conversion of H2O2 to H2O and O2, in the presence and absence of 6-BA, was also studied. Lineweaver-Burk plot indicates a noncompetitive type of inhibition. Molecular docking study was used to find the binding sites.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Rapid and comprehensive pathogen identification is crucial in zoonotic influenza diagnosis. METHODS: By optimizing the design of primers and probes and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) conditions, we achieved simultaneous detection of multiple influenza and zoonotic influenza viruses, including H1N1, H5N1, and H9N2 strains, in a one-step, quantitative real-time RT-PCR array (rRT-PCR array) of RNA from multiple influenza strains utilizing a single set of conditions for RT-PCR amplification. The target sequences from all targeted zoonotic influenza viruses were cloned into recombinant RNA virus particles, which were used to evaluate sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility of the zoonotic influenza viruses RT-PCR array. RESULTS: The detection limit of the array was shown to be between 10(0) and 10(1) copies per reaction, and the standard curve demonstrated a linear range from 10 to 10(6) copies. Thus, the analytical sensitivity of this zoonotic influenza viruses RT-PCR array is 10-100 times higher than conventional RT-PCR. Specificity of the one-step zoonotic influenza viruses RT-PCR array was verified by comparison of results obtained with retroviral-like particles (RVPs), which contained RNA from isolates of seasonal influenza viruses, zoonotic influenza viruses, and other pathogens known to cause acute respiratory disease. CONCLUSION: The high sensitivity, rapidity, reproducibility, and specificity of this zoonotic influenza viruses rRT-PCR array has been verified as being sufficient to detect the presence of multiple zoonotic influenza viruses in a single assay. The zoonotic influenza viruses RT-PCR array might provide rapid identification of emergent zoonotic influenza viruses strains during influenza outbreaks and disease surveillance initiatives.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To establish an HPLC fingerprint of Gardenia jasminoides f. longicarpa and compare the differences between its ordinary powder and ultrafine powder. METHODS: The analysis was carried out on a Kromasil C18 (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 microm) column with gradient elution of acetonitrile-0.4% phosphoric acid at the flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. The wavelength was 240 nm during 0 - 40 min and 440 nm during 40 - 80 min. RESULTS: HPLC fingerprint of Gardenia jasminoides f. longicarpa was established, 23 common peaks were identified,and the similarity of 10 samples was greater than 0.9. Ultrafine grinding did not change the types and number of chemical compositions, but it obviously increased the content of main chemical compositions. CONCLUSION: The HPLC fingerprint is accurate, reliable and repeatable, which can be used for quality control of Gardenia jasminoides f. longicarpa. Ultrafine grinding can stimulate the release of chemical components of Gardenia jasminoides f. longicarpa.

ABSTRACT

The capsular polysaccharide (CPS) synthesis locus of 13 Streptococcus suis serotypes (serotype 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 19, 23, 25 and 1/2) was sequenced and compared with that of serotype 2 and 16. The CPS synthesis locus of these 15 serotypes falls into two genetic groups. The locus is located on the chromosome between orfZ and aroA. All the translated proteins in the CPS synthesis locus were clustered into 127 homology groups using the tribemcl algorithm. The general organization of the locus suggested that the CPS of S. suis could be synthesized by the Wzy-dependent pathway. The capsule of serotypes 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 19 and 23 was predicted to be amino-polysaccharide. Sialic acid was predicted to be present in the capsule of serotypes 1, 2, 14, 16 and 1/2. The characteristics of the CPS synthesis locus suggest that some genes may have been imported into S. suis (or their ancestors) on multiple occasions from different and unknown sources.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of anemia and yearly trends (1993-2003) among women who came to the hospitals or maternal and child health units for premarital examinations in 6 counties of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. METHODS: Data were obtained from the records of the premarital examinations in perinatal health care surveillance system that had been established since 1992 in these areas. We reviewed hemoglobin levels of those women who were enrolled in the perinatal health care surveillance system from 1993 to 2003. Anemia was defined according to the WHO (2001) criterion. We calculated the prevalence of anemia and analyzed the yearly trends based on the data of hemoglobin concentration. RESULTS: In the period of 1993-2003, there were 82 995 anemia cases identified among 193,434 women with an overall anemia rate as 42.9%. The rates of anemia were high (65.5%) in 1993 but low (25.8%) in 2003. 99.7% of the anemic women whose hemoglobin concentration were between 80-119.9 g/L. Time trend analysis indicated a significant decline on anemia rate while monthly analysis showed that the prevalence rates were high (48.2%) in September and low in March (39.5%). The results also showed that the prevalence rates of anemia were relatively higher in farmers and workers in rural enterprises, and lower in Han ethnicity than minorities. The higher prevalence rates of anemia were presented among the women with less education, lower body mass index, or at older age. CONCLUSION: For those premarital women in 6 counties of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, the overall anemic rate presented a significant downward trend between 1993 and 2003 while the prevalence of anemia remained high, especially for the women with less education, lower body mass index or older ages.
