ABSTRACT

Thermochemical properties and intramolecular interactions of 2,2'-dinitrodiphenyl disulfide (2DNDPDS) and 4,4'-dinitrodiphenyl disulfide (4DNDPDS) were determined and analyzed. Their standard molar formation enthalpies in the gas phase (ΔfHm°(g)'s) were experimentally determined; theoretically, they were computed using the G4 composite method and atomization reactions. Specifically, ΔfHm°(g)'s were obtained by combining formation enthalpies in the condensed phase and enthalpies of phase change. Formation enthalpies in the condensed phase were determined experimentally through combustion energies, which in turn were found by means of a rotatory bomb combustion calorimeter. Sublimation enthalpies were derived from thermogravimetric experiments, measuring the rate of mass loss and using Langmuir and Clausius-Clapeyron equations. Fusion enthalpies and heat capacities of the solid and liquid phases were measured as functions of temperature by differential scanning calorimetry, and the heat capacities of the gas phase were calculated via molecular orbital calculations. Theoretical and experimental ΔfHm°(g)'s differed by <5.5kJ·mol-1, and isomerization enthalpies are discussed. In addition, using theoretical tools [natural bond orbitals (NBO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM)], intramolecular interactions were analyzed. An uncommon hypervalent four-center six-electron interaction of type O···S-S···O was found in 2DNDPDS. This hypervalent interaction, in addition to the extent of conjugation between the aryl and NO2 moieties and the formation of intramolecular C-H···S hydrogen bonds, counteracts the repulsion caused by steric repulsions. Hydrogen bonding was confirmed through geometric parameters as well as QTAIM.

ABSTRACT

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a significant public health concern and has been associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. TBI generates two types of brain damage: primary and secondary. Secondary damage originates a series of pathophysiological processes, which include metabolic crisis, excitotoxicity, and neuroinflammation, which have deleterious consequences for neuronal function. However, neuroprotective mechanisms are also activated. The balance among these tissue responses, and its variations throughout the day determines the fate of the damage tissue. We have demonstrated less behavioral and morphological damage when a rat model of TBI was induced during the light hours of the day. Moreover, here we show that rats subjected to TBI in the dark lost less body weight than those subjected to TBI in the light, despite no change in food intake. Besides, the rats subjected to TBI in the dark had better performance in the beam walking test and presented less histological damage in the corpus callosum and the cingulum bundle, as shown by the Klüver-Barrera staining. Our results suggest that the time of day when the injury occurs is important. Thus, this data should be used to evaluate the pathophysiological processes of TBI events and develop better therapies.

ABSTRACT

The intramolecular hydrogen bond of the N-H···S type has been investigated sparingly by thermochemical and computational methods. In order to study this interaction, the standard molar enthalpies of formation in gaseous phase of diphenyl disulfide, 2,2'-diaminodiphenyl disulfide and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl disulfide at T = 298.15 K were determined by experimental thermochemical methods and computational calculations. The experimental enthalpies of formation in gas-phase were obtained from enthalpies of formation in crystalline phase and enthalpies of sublimation. Enthalpies of formation in crystalline phase were obtained using rotatory bomb combustion calorimetry. By thermogravimetry, enthalpies of vaporization were obtained, and by combining them with enthalpies of fusion, the enthalpies of sublimation were calculated. The Gaussian-4 procedure and the atomization method were applied to obtain enthalpies of formation in gas-phase of the compounds under study. Theoretical and experimental values are in good agreement. Through natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis and a topological analysis of the electronic density, the intramolecular hydrogen bridge (N-H···S) in the 2,2'-diaminodiphenyl disulfide was confirmed. Finally, an enthalpic difference of 11.8 kJ·mol-1 between the 2,2'-diaminodiphenyl disulfide and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl disulfide was found, which is attributed to the intramolecular N-H···S interaction.

ABSTRACT

We conducted an immunological assay of blood samples taken from 85 swine-specialist veterinarians attending the Congress of the Mexican Association of Swine Specialist Veterinarians in Mexico in 2011. Serum samples were assayed for Porcine rubulavirus (PorPV), Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) and Leptospira spp. antibodies. Using a hemagglutination inhibition test, we registered 2.3% and 27% seropositivity for PorPV and EMCV, respectively. Using viral neutralization tests, we registered 5.8% and 47% seropositivity for PorPV and EMCV, respectively. For Leptospira spp., we registered a seropositivity of 38.8%. The variables (sex, age, years of exposure, number of visited farms, biosecurity level and region) showed no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the seropositivity for EMCV, PorPV and Leptospira spp. except for number of visited farms on HI seropositivity for EMCV (P < 0.05; odds ratio: 1.38). The data obtained provide information on the epidemiology of emerging diseases with zoonotic potential in occupational risk groups.

ABSTRACT

The LiNbO(3) congruent crystals doped with small Nd concentrations, <1 mol% Nd, and co-doped with Mg ions, 0-9 mol% Mg, were systematically investigated by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy in the Y and Z crystal directions. Results obtained from an undoped congruent crystal, an Nd-doped crystal, a Mg-doped crystal and Nd, Mg-co-doped crystals are compared. From the analyses of the results obtained in the Y direction, the Nd and Mg content dependence of the two lowest-Raman A(1)(TO(1)) and A(1)(TO(2)) modes, the half-width composition and the area ratio of the A(1)(TO(4)) and E(TO(8)) bands, we reached several conclusions about the incorporation mechanism of the Nd and Mg ions into the LiNbO(3) lattice. Likewise the Raman shift and half-width of the E(TO(1)) and E(TO(7)) modes were investigated in the Z direction. Results indicate that Mg and Nd ions are located in the Li site for low doping concentrations and for larger concentrations there is a replacement in both Li and Nb ion sites.
