ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rat experimentation is the first line of research by which a medical hypothesis is usually tested. Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a relatively new bio-material that has shown promise to enhance healing in the field of bone research and tissue engineering. In order to perform PRF based experiments on rats, a proper protocol of obtaining PRF from rats needs to be established. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 35 Wistar rats were used to obtain PRF by using cardiac puncture blood draw and quick subsequent centrifugation. The PRF samples wereanalyzed and compared to standard literature PRF composition. RESULTS: PRF samples analysis showed persistent results pertaining to known PRF composition. CONCLUSIONS: Our experiment has shown that our protocol of obtaining PRF is capable of providing high quality PRF from rats.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to review lip tumor diagnosed subjects from Oltenia region, in the past 5 years according to gender, age, home environment, profession, geographic area, smoking habit, associated diseases, tumor location, macroscopic aspect and histological type. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was done at the Oral and Maxillo-Facial Clinic of the Emergency Clinical County Hospital of Craiova, and involved the analysis of patient file records, surgical registers, histopathological bulletins, from 2012-2016. RESULTS: Of the 175 subjects included in this study, all of them diagnosed with lip tumor pathology, 109 (62.29%) were men, and 66 (37.71%) were women, all of them with ages between 6 and 92 years, with a mean age of 61 years. Distribution of study participants according to the home residence showed that majority of the subjects lived in rural area. The most frequently localization of lip tumors in study participants was at the lower lip-140 cases (80%), than at the upper lip-35 cases (20%).According to histological characteristics, distribution of the malignant lip tumors was 87.39%-squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 5.41%-basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and 7.20%-other type of tumors. CONCLUSIONS: The lower lip was the most affected, by lip cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma represents the most frequently histological type of these tumors.

ABSTRACT

Lips are structures that play an essential role in aesthetics, nutrition and speech. Their complex anatomy-with three different layers composed of skin, mucosa, and muscles-makes surgical management of this area a therapeutic challenge. We report here 3 cases of surgical reconstruction of the upper lip after the excision of tumors of varying sizes. The resulted defect from tumor extirpation is always closely linked to the time elapsed from the appearance of the tumor to the presentation in the ambulatory of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether the co-administration of aripiprazole and fluoxetine could produce impaired liver function in Wistar rats by means of liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) and hemojuvelin (HJV) serum levels. Furthermore, the experiment intended to assess the salivary levels of L-FABP and HJV and to determine whether they correlate with the serum levels of the two markers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups: control (saline 10ml/kg), aripiprazole (4.05 mg/kg), fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) and aripiprazole + fluoxetine (4.05 mg/kg + 10 mg/kg). The drugs were administered by gavage, daily at the same hour, along a 6 week period. L-FABP and HJV levels were determined in serum, from intraventricular blood, and in saliva. Also from intraventricular blood, serum levels for aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) and alanine amino transferase (ALAT) were assessed. RESULTS: Positive and statistically significant correlations between serum and salivary levels of L-FABP and HJV were found. Aripiprazole + fluoxetine group experienced increased serum L-FABP levels than aripiprazole and fluoxetine groups, and salivary L-FABP as compared to aripiprazole group; but it registered decreased levels for serum and salivary HJV, for ASAT and ALAT than aripiprazole and fluoxetine groups, and for salivary L-FABP compared to fluoxetine group. CONCLUSIONS: The data indicate that: aripiprazole coprescribed with fluoxetine do not cause additional alterations in liver function; L-FABP and HJV levels can be helpful as biomarkers for impaired function of hepatocytes; and that their salivary determination can replace serum determination.

ABSTRACT

Chronic periodontopathies and diabetes mellitus are two clinical entities, which reciprocally condition one another. The periodontal disease is considered a major complication, which induces an unfavorable evolution of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disease which favors the occurrence of periodontopathy through gum's microvascular disorders, the selection and development of an aggressive bacterial plaque and through an exaggerate inflammatory response to the microflora within the oral cavity. Both diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease have an increasing incidence in the whole world. Development of periodontopathy is related to the aggression of bacterial flora in dental plaque, flora that is influenced on its turn by the evolution of diabetes mellitus. In our study, we have evaluated the inflammatory reaction in periodontium in patients with slowly and progressive periodontitis in patients with diabetes mellitus who had diabetes longer than five years. It has been found that all patients presented a chronic inflammatory infiltrate, abundant, with round mononuclear cells of lymphocyte, plasma cells and macrophage type, with non-homogenous arrangement, more intensely where the covering epithelium presented erosions or necrotic areas. Out of the immunity system cells, the most numerous where of T-lymphocytes type.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: In the present study, we aimed to assess MMP-9 and type IV collagen in the gingival tissue in patients with gingival overgrowth (GO) after orthodontic treatment, with or without clinical signs of inflammation to appreciate the role of balance between those two markers in the onset of GO during tooth movement. MATERIALS: Gingival tissue was harvested from 45 patients divided in three groups: 15 patients with orthodontic appliance that developed GO on at least two teeth; 15 patients with chronic gingivitis with GO; 15 patients (control group) with healthy periodontal tissues, without clinical gingival changes, in whom the first premolar was planned for extraction for orthodontic purposes (canine distalization). METHODS: The tissue samples obtained by gingivectomy were fixed in 10% neutral formalin solution for 48 hours and then included in paraffin with the usual technique. The histologic examination was performed using classic Hematoxylin-Eosin technique. Double immunofluorescence was performed for anti-MMP-9 and anti-collagen IV antibodies. RESULTS: MMP-9/collagen IV double stainings showed an increase of fibrosis and inflammation in different degrees. CONCLUSIONS: The mechanical stress induced by the orthodontic devices, might be the key players in driving both the inflammation and the fibrotic reaction.
